The two little ones, thinking themselves clever, covered up all the little strawberries before heading downstairs. That afternoon, they ate in the dining room. Shen Xian had ordered a two-tiered cake, enough for everyone in the family to enjoy.

Seeing the two kids come down, Shen Xian teased Shen Tian, saying, “Tiantian, two bottles of beer and you’re already done for? Is your head still spinning?”

“Not anymore,” Shen Tian replied, blushing as she recalled the things she’d said to Lu Ningwan while drunk. Her ears were still red.

Shen Xian chuckled as she looked at the kids. Her gaze swept over them, then paused at Shen Tian’s neck. She felt the skin there looked slightly different from the rest of her body. “Tiantian, what’s up with your neck? Why does it look like some spots are a different color?”

Shen Tian turned completely red at the question, and even Lu Ningwan started blushing. Shen Xian glanced at the kids, then at Ningwan, and immediately understood what was going on. She quickly changed the subject. “Anyway, you two and Yinan go pick out some drinks for tonight. Tiantian, no more beer for you—you get drunk too easily.”

“Got it, Mommy!” Shen Tian replied, grabbing Lu Ningwan’s hand and rushing off to choose drinks.

Shen Xian watched the two kids with amusement. She’d been 28 when she started dating, but these kids were only eighteen and already had partners. She really couldn’t compare to them.

Shen Tian pulled Lu Ningwan along to pick out drinks, whispering, “Little Sister Lu, I think Mommy figured it out.”

“I noticed. Mommy and Mother have been through this themselves, so they definitely know. But since Mommy didn’t say anything, let’s just pretend we don’t know either,” Lu Ningwan whispered back.

“Okay,” Shen Tian agreed.

Once they’d picked out the drinks, the food was almost ready. Everyone gathered around to sing a birthday song for Shen Tian. After turning off the lights, Shen Xian told the kids to make a wish before blowing out the candles together.

Shen Tian glanced at Lu Ningwan, clasped her hands together in front of her chest, and when she opened her eyes, she was still looking at Lu Ningwan.

Shen Xian laughed and said, “Your Little Sister Lu isn’t going anywhere. You don’t have to stare at her like that.”

“Mommy!” Shen Tian said, a bit embarrassed.

After Shen Tian made her wish, everyone blew out the candles together. Then Shen Tian started cutting the cake. When she cut a slice for Lu Ningwan, she deliberately drew a heart shape on it with a fork before shyly handing it over. “Little Sister Lu, this one’s for you.”

Lu Ningwan looked at the heart and smiled even brighter.

Lu Ningwan scrolled through her phone while Shen Tian played a match-three game. As Lu Ningwan played, she kept catching a faint strawberry scent that made her heart flutter. She put down her phone and asked Shen Tian, “Tiantian, do you smell strawberries? Did someone eat some? That can’t be right. If Wang Auntie bought strawberries, they’d be downstairs, and we wouldn’t smell them up here. Plus, it’s not even strawberry season.”

Shen Tian’s nightgown was soaked with sweat. She lifted her nose slightly and pressed her lips to the gland.
