"The Alpha Who Abandoned Love—And Got a Second Chance" - Chapter 13
After Dr. Zhao left, silence fell like a curtain.
The long, empty hospital corridor was steeped in the pungent scent of disinfectant—strong, yet not unpleasant.
Lin Xi had only wanted to get rid of him quickly. There was something unsettling about the way he looked at her, as if he were suspicious or probing her for secrets.
A moment later, Lin Xi pulled out her ID again.
Her fingers were fair, slender, and elegant. She gently touched the gender field on the card with the tip of her finger.
Her gaze dropped down to the word printed there—Alpha.
Strange as it felt, there was no denying it: she was registered as an Alpha.
But just moments ago, in the emergency room, the female doctor who treated Chu Muqing had asked if she was really an Alpha. And then Dr. Zhao had asked the same question again.
She remembered the rules of this world clearly—when an Omega enters heat, an Alpha is supposed to be affected by their pheromones.
It was supposed to be involuntary, irresistible.
Yet, Chu Muqing’s heat hadn’t affected her at all.
That must have been the very reason those two doctors doubted her identity as an Alpha.
Lin Xi pinched the bridge of her nose, shifted her gaze away, and slipped the ID back into her wallet.
At the same time, a vague and subtle suspicion crept into her mind. Perhaps there was something else—something the original host’s body was hiding. A secret not revealed in the original storyline.
She wasn’t sure yet. She’d need to ask the original host’s family, and the first person who came to mind was Mrs. Lin.
But just as her fingers reached toward her pocket, she remembered—her phone was still turned off.
Nearly half an hour passed, and the emergency room door remained tightly shut.
Outside, it was still raining. Lin Xi leaned against the window at the end of the hallway, gazing down at the sudden and unrelenting downpour.
“Her glands were just severely damaged by Alpha pheromones.”
That sentence, spoken by the doctor earlier, kept echoing in her mind.
Even though Lin Xi had only recently arrived in this world, she already understood how sensitive and vulnerable the nape gland was for Omegas like Chu Muqing.
Lin Xi frowned. It was that Alpha—they had hurt her!
And yet… Chu Muqing didn’t want to call the police.
That Alpha had said they’d known each other for seventeen years.
What kind of intimate relationship would make someone endure that kind of harm without retaliation? Was Chu Muqing…
Protecting them?
While Lin Xi’s mind was tangled with thoughts, a sound finally came from behind her.
She turned her head. The emergency room door slowly opened from the inside.
“Nurse…” Lin Xi stepped forward and asked softly, “How is she?”
The nurse moved aside to let her in, and Lin Xi immediately entered.
The emergency room was brightly lit. Chu Muqing was awake.
She lay on the hospital bed, the blush of heat drained from her face. Her delicate, porcelain-like features now appeared sickly pale. A pillow was propped behind her back, and her long neck was wrapped in a circle of white gauze—she looked weak and frail.
When she saw Lin Xi, Chu Muqing glanced at her, then looked away and said in a low voice, “My bank card is in my bag.”
Lin Xi was caught off guard for a moment.
Chu Muqing’s eyes shifted from the bed to Lin Xi’s gentle face. Even though she had been mostly unconscious earlier, she knew it was Lin Xi who had shown up in time, taken her away, and stopped Lu Lingyu from succeeding.
Lin Xi came back to herself and stepped to the bedside. She said warmly, “Don’t worry, I already paid.”
Chu Muqing looked a little surprised.
“What, did you think they’d give you suppressant shots without payment?” Lin Xi smiled.
She reached out as if to check Chu Muqing’s forehead, but halfway there, she hesitated. The gesture felt too intimate, so she awkwardly withdrew her hand.
Chu Muqing didn’t even react in time to refuse.
Lin Xi quickly retracted her hand and gave an embarrassed chuckle. “Looks like your fever’s gone down.”
From this angle, Lin Xi could see that Chu Muqing had long, beautiful lashes. In her weakened state, her eyes were soft and glistening, brimming with an almost fragile beauty.
Chu Muqing lowered her gaze and responded softly, “Mm.”
Her voice was calm, but waves of emotion churned inside her. At that moment, she didn’t know how to face Lin Xi.
By now, the two of them should’ve already been at the civil affairs office—finalizing their divorce.
As her thoughts scattered, the female doctor spoke again:
“If you had arrived even a little later, your wife’s glands might’ve suffered permanent damage—beyond repair.”
She was addressing Lin Xi.
Lin Xi was shocked. “It was that serious?”
“What do you think?” the doctor replied bluntly.
She was an Omega herself, and as one, even if she weren’t a doctor, she couldn’t help but feel sympathy for Chu Muqing.
Her expression darkened as she frowned and said to Lin Xi, “If you knew your wife’s body has a severe allergic reaction to Alpha pheromones—triggering intense asthma—why would you still attack her with your pheromones?”
“Asthma?” Lin Xi’s brow furrowed. “I… attacked her with pheromones?”
“Your wife’s condition is unique. Even passive contact with Alpha pheromones can disrupt her own pheromone balance, cause asthma, and forcibly trigger her into heat. You knew this, and still—” The doctor stopped mid-sentence, seeing Lin Xi’s blank expression. She looked curiously at her. “Wait, has she not told you about her condition?”
Lin Xi shook her head, then nodded uncertainly. She looked over at Chu Muqing.
Had the original host known?
She honestly had no idea.
Chu Muqing frowned slightly and explained in a quiet voice, “She didn’t hurt me. She doesn’t know anything.”
Lin Xi muttered, “Yeah, we’ve only been married for less than a week…”
“Oh?” The doctor finally understood. She turned to Chu Muqing and asked sternly, “It was another Alpha who harmed your glands? Do you want to file a police report?”
Chu Muqing lowered her eyes and shook her head.
The doctor inhaled sharply. The situation was more twisted than she had expected.
This stunning Omega had been violated by another Alpha. Though no permanent marking had occurred, it was still serious. And yet, her newlywed Alpha seemed completely in the dark about her condition—utterly clueless.
If Chu Muqing had hidden this from Lin Xi, and had other complicated ties to that Alpha…
The doctor glanced back at Lin Xi with a subtle look of pity in her eyes—almost as if a fresh patch of metaphorical green grass had sprouted on Lin Xi’s head.
“Ahem… she’s still very weak. I recommend hospitalization for observation,” the doctor said, collecting her thoughts and addressing Lin Xi.
Lin Xi hesitated, then nodded. “Okay.”
“I can’t stay,” Chu Muqing looked at Lin Xi, her voice firm but tinged with pleading. “I know my body. This isn’t the first time. I just need to go home and take my medicine.”
If she were hospitalized, no one would be there to care for Chengcheng. And she’d have a hard time explaining things to the company.
Lin Xi considered it. She rarely saw Chu Muqing in such a vulnerable, pleading state. Her normally cold and distant demeanor had softened—delicate and pitiful.
But…
She turned to the doctor. “Does she have to stay?”
The doctor thought for a moment, then asked, “Do you still have medicine at home?”
Chu Muqing replied, “Yes, but not much.”
The doctor gave a faint smile. “If the patient doesn’t want to be admitted, we won’t force it. I’ll just prescribe a bit more medication.”
Chu Muqing nodded slightly. “Thank you, doctor.”
The doctor shrugged and returned to the desk, pulling up the e-prescription form on her computer.
Lin Xi thanked her and turned to leave, heading to the first-floor lobby to pay for the medicine.
As she walked, she made a mental note: on her way upstairs earlier, she had noticed a pamphlet about AO-related s3x education near the public notice board. She’d grab a copy after paying.
After she left and closed the door behind her, the doctor tidied up a bit and soon departed.
The nurse in charge of caring for Chu Muqing stepped up to her bedside and said, “Miss Chu, this condition of yours is almost impossible to cure.”
Chu Muqing lowered her eyes and responded quietly, “I know.”
“Then why did you marry an Alpha, knowing full well you’ll never be able to be marked by one?”
With an illness like hers, how could she possibly be worthy of someone like Miss Lin—young, beautiful, and a healthy Alpha?
Omegas with Chu Muqing’s condition usually chose lifelong celibacy or married a Beta.
But Chu Muqing had hidden everything from Lin Xi.
The nurse said flatly, “No offense, but how is this not a kind of marital fraud?”
Chu Muqing opened her mouth but couldn’t find the words to explain.
At that moment, the not-quite-shut door burst open with a loud bang.
The nurse jumped in shock.
“Ms… Ms. Lin…”
She turned and saw Lin Xi standing there, holding a bag of medicine, eyes cold and voice stern.
“Our private matters are none of your business.”
