Episode 16: Final Battle with “Maw of Miasma”
Deep within the miasma, it waited.
In the depths of the Miasma Plain—shrouded in vision-blocking poisonous haze—sat a grotesque monster: the Maw of Miasma.
Its body was bloated and swollen. Its jaws grotesquely overdeveloped. It inhaled the miasma and exhaled thick swirls of dark purple haze—truly the embodiment of miasma itself.
(…It’s here.)
Thanks to my training, I’d finally reached Lv.6 in both “Poison Resistance” and “Physical Resistance”. Now, I could finally enter this domain.
The surrounding miasma constantly re-inflicts poison. Every one of this monster’s attacks is also laced with poison—and they’re deadly even without it.
“Poison Resistance” alone won’t cut it. Without “Physical Resistance” too, you won’t even be allowed to stand in front of it.
(Good… This is exactly what training was for.)
Its bl00d-red-black eyes locked onto me.
In the next moment, its massive body kicked off the ground—tremors shaking the earth beneath me.
A charge. A giant jaw coming down from above.
(—I can see it.)
With a slight twist of my body, I dodged. Heavy air brushed past me. It was followed by an even denser burst of poison fog.
《Poison Resistance Lv.6: Poison Blocked》
Thanks to “Poison Resistance Lv.6”, the miasma had no effect—but this monster had another abnormality.
(This thing… absorbs miasma and spreads a condensed field called “Dense Fog.”)
“Dense Fog” gradually builds up physical fatigue.
Your steps grow heavier. Your breathing shallows. Your muscles slowly begin to tighten.
It’s like a rapidly rising “fatigue gauge” in a game—that’s the field this boss creates.
According to knowledge from my previous life, the Maw of Miasma is designed to force you to your limit via exhaustion.
Even if you can resist the poison, you’ll still suffer delayed inputs and stiffness from fatigue.
(Now the real fight begins.)
To acquire the “Constant Activity” skill, I must repeatedly experience sharp rises and falls in the fatigue gauge within a short time.
The monster raises it. Fatigue recovery potions lower it.
By repeating this cycle, I can gain the “Constant Activity” skill.
There’s no visible fatigue gauge.
Instead, I must monitor it through my breathing, muscle tension, and dullness in my head—which makes it all the more fun.
Once again, the monster lunged.
Its fangs came at me.
I swung my sword. A dull clang rang out—like iron clashing with iron.
The impact pushed me back half a step as I repelled its jaw.
All the while, the tightness in my muscles kept increasing.
(Fatigue—but it’s valuable experience.)
A familiar thirst throbbed in the back of my mind.
More. I want to fight more—
(Yes, more… The joy of battle lies in operating near your limits.)
Then—
The beast compressed the miasma. It formed a spiral of dark poison inside its mouth.
(A straight-line breath attack!)
I jumped instinctively.
The poisonous breath tore into the ground beneath me.
My vision warped as the dense fog spiraled violently.
That moment—
A surprise charge came from the side.
Its jaw grazed my shoulder, leaving a faint red line.
《HP: 96%》
Pain surged.
But my focus held firm.
(Tight control on the edge—this isn’t bad.)
—A surge of pleasure in my brain.
Combat control at the brink of collapse.
I know this isn’t what normal adventurers aim for.
This isn’t about defeating enemies. It’s about tracing the edge.
(Alright, time to use one.)
Fatigue from the “Dense Fog” had piled up—I felt like I’d been awake for two or three straight days.
I chugged my first fatigue recovery potion.
My muscles relaxed a bit. The heaviness eased.
But fatigue kept building. In this field, every move immediately boosts the gauge.
(Five left…)
From here on, it’s a war of attrition.
To get the “Constant Activity” skill, I must endure this thing’s attacks while managing my fatigue.
Twisting my body over and over, parrying its jaws with my sword, springing off the mossy ground—
And still, slowly but surely, the fatigue accumulated.
(This monster is designed to trigger fatigue and even rob you of your thought speed.)
My vision blurred slightly for a moment.
《HP: 88%》
My brain edged toward oxygen deficiency.
Subtle delays began creeping into my muscle movements.
I could feel my fingers reacting just a bit slower.
(…But this—this is what I came for.)
A realm no ordinary foe could bring me to.
This extreme state is the sensation I craved.
(Good. Next—)
I drank the second potion.
As it slid down my throat, my muscles loosened slightly. My reflexes recovered.
But I also felt an unmistakable unease beginning to build.
If you use more than seven of these in a short time, a status called “Addiction” kicks in.
It massively reduces potion effectiveness and causes prolonged fatigue.
(Tightrope walk… Four more to go.)
The beast was forming another vortex of poison—another high-compression breath.
I slid past it at close range.
Slipped slightly on the moss. My footing faltered.
(—But I can dodge it.)
In the middle of the fight, I smiled.
This is fun.
(This is what it means to fight.)
Every nerve on edge.
The world sharpened.
Each move transformed my body into something greater.
—Third potion.
Calculating my limits, timing each use precisely, I pressed forward.
By now, I’d fully analyzed the monster’s movements.
(This movement… next angle… jump speed… I see it all.)
I can definitely win.
I’m close to meeting the conditions for “Constant Activity.”
The beast fired two layered orbs of condensed miasma with erratic paths.
(…Interesting.)
I slipped through a slightly off-center line—dodging the blast core.
Though I took a minor hit from the sludge, “Physical Resistance” dulled the impact.
《HP: 70%》
More poison blasts followed. But I read the turbulence and closed the distance while dodging.
Fourth potion—balancing rising fatigue with recovery.
(More… take me to the edge.)
Fifth potion—elation and logic fought for dominance. The thrill only sharpened.
I moved like I was swimming through the miasma. I was getting in close again.
The beast began charging up for its most massive miasma cannon.
“—Now.”
A torrent of miasma so heavy it had weight.
But I leaned into a slight air current and slid into blade range.
And then—
(Push past my limits.)
—Sixth potion.
That moment, a spark flashed in my mind.
《Skill Acquired: Constant Activity》
《Skill: Constant Activity Lv.1》
(It’s here…!)
At the very peak of my fatigue and tension, a new sensation flowed through me.
For a moment, the fatigue leveled out.
I could feel a higher level of bodily control.
(…I can still fight!)
I surged forward, right into the chest of the roaring beast.
Slashed my blade into its side.
Flesh tore.
Dark miasma spewed and mixed into the air.
Enraged, the beast began its final rampage.
It bared its fangs and rushed forward in a violent charge.
(I can read it…)
Just before its jaws reached me, I slid in close and thrust my sword into its throat.
“————It’s over!!”
My blade pierced deep.
The beast let out its death cry—
Then collapsed with a thud.
Its massive body slowly faded. It was swallowed by the fog.
Thick miasma oozed into the ground. And the surrounding haze began to thin slightly.
Silence returned without a sound.
I slowly sheathed my sword and caught my breath, standing still.
Fatigue clung to every part of me—
But inside, I felt an odd sense of fulfillment.
(…So this is the feel of “Constant Activity.”)
A new skill, born from combat.
Still pulsing deep within me.
A survival technique reached through training and hardship.
A peak I carved out for myself—
Now engraved within.
(Not bad… No—this is the best.)
I looked up at the sky. It was still swirling with miasma.
The pale violet mist seemed to signal the start of a new battle.
(With this… “stage one” is complete.)
But deep down, I was already craving the next fight.
Higher, deeper—
The battle doesn’t end here.
In fact… it’s only just begun.
