Episode 50: Rematch and Leveling Up
The skill “Indomitable” has finally reached Lv.5. Looking up at the morning sky through the window, I let out a deep breath and poured a potion down my throat.
The preparations for the skill were complete. The next destination is—the place I once visited, the Miasma Plain.
That place has a monster called Maw of Miasma. It’s considered essential for efficiently raising the fatigue gauge. Once defeated, it “respawns” after a certain period. So by now it should have appeared again.
Last time, I went there to obtain the “Constant Activity” skill. Not even a month has passed since then. But precisely because of that, I can now check just how much I’ve grown.
At that moment, a memory of the game I played in my previous life surfaced.
The “Dense Fog” spread by Maw of Miasma doesn’t just “add fatigue.” Strictly speaking, it adds fatigue “in proportion to your current fatigue level.”
In other words, the more tired you are, the faster fatigue piles up—a completely unreasonable mechanic.
(It’s not a fixed value. That’s why the fatigue-reduction effect of “Constant Activity” hardly works…)
I recalled how hated this feature was in the game. But for me now, it was convenient.
To efficiently raise the level of “Constant Activity”, I need an opponent that “can make me accumulate fatigue in a short time.”
In that sense, it was the perfect target.
(Time to finish preparing and head out.)
I still had silver coins left from the request reward. Fatigue potions cost thirty copper each. So with what I had, I could buy more than ten and still have change left.
Thinking that, I finished breakfast and immediately left the inn.
◆
By the time the sun was climbing overhead, I had stepped into the Miasma Plain.
Countless miasma clouds crawled across the ground. The air was heavy with moisture. And a faint taste of rust clung to the back of my throat.
The visibility was still poor. But I already knew the terrain. And that monster was here.
I wasn’t that tired, but now I had “Indomitable: Lv.5”. It was only supposed to increase resistance against mental interference. But actually experiencing it in reality gave me a different impression.
And above all, I now had a clear goal—to raise the level of “Constant Activity”.
(I should definitely be able to move better than before.)
From deep inside the fog, I heard strange sounds. A beast’s growl, and the dragging of something. And then—I saw it.
“Maw of Miasma. We meet again.”
Dragging its four legs, the grotesque monster opened its distorted jaws wide. Just like before, it was wrapped in miasma and slowly crawled toward me. But I no longer felt the confusion of seeing it for the first time.
On the contrary, I couldn’t wait to fight it.
Keeping “Constant Activity” in mind, I responded with minimal movement. Even its charge attack, which troubled me before, was much easier to read now.
(Here it comes—”Dense Fog”!)
The “Dense Fog” spread out once again. As it clung to my body, the wave of fatigue hit me.
(Good, I’m definitely getting tired.)
I had worried that some unknown effect might reduce it. But it seemed fine. I felt relieved.
Even while the fog spread, the Maw of Miasma didn’t stop attacking. But killing it now would only mean waiting until it respawned.
That’s why this wasn’t a fight—it was training.
Its movement range was limited. It never approached human settlements. And compared to other monsters in this field, it was relatively safe.
That’s why it was also convenient as a training partner.
――Already several minutes had passed since I stepped into the fog’s range.
Visibility was poor, the miasma clung to my throat. But unlike before, there was little “discomfort.”
(“Indomitable”, huh…)
Resistance to mental interference—that’s all it was supposed to be. But experiencing it this way made me understand. Even in a miasma-filled space, my spirit wasn’t eroded. No impatience, no confusion—it was clearly reduced. Just knowing it also covered this kind of effect was huge.
And that alone changed the fight completely.
《Skill Level-Up Confirmed》
《Skill: Evasion Boost Lv.2 → Lv.3》
Probably because I only dodged the attacks without striking back, the “Evasion Boost” skill leveled up. It made dodging even easier—definitely a welcome change.
(Now I don’t even feel cornered anymore.)
The opponent I once fought desperately against now looked like nothing more than a sparring partner.
It was like coming back to an early-game boss in an RPG. Since you’re already armed with endgame gear and skills, you can sweep it aside with ease.
――Sensing that my fatigue was reaching the limit, I took advantage of its openings to drink fatigue-recovery potions. I repeated the cycle.
Before, each drink piled up an unpleasant feeling in my head—definitely the sign of an upcoming status ailment called “Addiction.”
But now, there was no such sign. Or rather, it was so faint it barely mattered. In the game, it was said that “Indomitable: Lv.5” could nullify the drawbacks of “Addiction”—and apparently, that was true.
In total, I drank seven fatigue potions.
《Status: Addiction》
(So this is it.)
As expected, the “Addiction” status ailment appeared. But even so, nothing seemed to change.
Thanks to “Indomitable”, even this drawback was greatly reduced.
Drinking another potion to heal my fatigue worked without problems. That cleared up one concern.
Dodging Maw of Miasma’s endless attacks, the training continued.
《Skill Level-Up Confirmed》
《Skill: Constant Activity Lv.1 → Lv.2》
――Finally!
The long-awaited level-up for “Constant Activity”. It felt like it took forever to get here.
(So this is like an evolution of “Constant Activity”?)
At Lv.1, it definitely “controlled” fatigue. But now, it also seemed to “reconstruct movements.”
Even when exhausted, I could precisely use all my resources. Even when tired, I could perform as if I wasn’t.
That was the effect of “Constant Activity: Lv.2”. It didn’t make me stronger when tired—it just gave me the strength not to collapse even at the limit.
That fact alone was exhilarating. While savoring that feeling, I continued responding to Maw of Miasma.
(…The consumption is heavier than I thought.)
Only a few fatigue potions remained. If it took this much just to reach Lv.2, then Lv.3 and beyond would surely require even more.
Drinking the few left now would be wasted. Since the conditions for leveling up required “a certain amount of time” anyway.
So, it was best to retreat. Without killing Maw of Miasma, I withdrew. It tried to attack several times. But now that I knew its patterns, evading was easy.
I escaped both the “Dense Fog “ and the monster. Lv.2 was still not enough. Only when I had leveled up to a satisfying point would the real battle begin.
