Episode 55: Training and Magic Power Vision
――That day too, the Maw of Miasma was there. As always, in the depths of the wilderness. It was in a place where the miasma swayed. As if waiting for me.
“…Kept you waiting, huh.”
The sword I held naturally fit into place. I had lost count of how many times I’d faced it by now. But it wasn’t only me who was “getting used to it.”
――Its movements are different.
Compared to the first time, compared to even yesterday. Its way of closing the distance was more refined. The rhythm of its combos, the way it recovered from evasions—slightly, but unmistakably sharper.
(…As I thought, it’s learning.)
Could such a thing even happen? ――No, this was once a “game.”
Phenomena that never existed in the system back then now occur here. If so, it wouldn’t be strange for monsters to “learn.”
The battle with the learning Maw of Miasma began again. With every repeat, the fight became less straightforward—yet that made it all the more enjoyable.
《Skill Level-Up Confirmed 》
《Skill: Evasion Boost Lv.4 → Lv.5》
《Skill: Constant Activity Lv.3 → Lv.4》
Again today, I confirmed the leveling of my target skills.
The feel of the battle wasn’t bad. Even when I took attacks, “Physical Resistance: Lv.7” protected me. It wasn’t fatal—however, relying too much on the skill would be dangerous.
I could already think of several methods that would pierce “Physical Resistance”. No matter what, letting my guard down was forbidden. Still, it would take more time for “Constant Activity’s” experience to fill up.
And my potion supply was running low.
I let out a deep breath and lowered my sword.
“…That’s it for today.”
Turning my back, I retreated. The Maw of Miasma didn’t pursue. As if it had “understood,” it simply maintained silence—leaving a strong impression.
◆
After putting some distance between us, I pulled the cork from a potion and downed it in one go. I restored my HP.
“…The efficiency’s dropping.”
I muttered under my breath, reaching into my bag. The clatter of empty potion bottles rolling around stuck in my ears.
――I had thirty-seven silver coins left. More than half of the reward I earned from the Academy’s request had already melted away.
Judging from that, I could probably still raise “Constant Activity” to Lv.5. But beyond Lv.6, I’d likely have to earn more money again.
(A round number like Lv.5… maybe that’s a good stopping point.)
I would pause “Constant Activity” at Lv.5. After that, I’d take some requests to earn money, acquire any necessary skills, and then resume leveling “Constant Activity”.
“…Strange, isn’t it.”
It was just past noon, nearing evening.
On the way back to town, words slipped out. Monsters were simply enemies. They were training partners that respawned.
Yet, after crossing blades so many times, reading each other, sometimes taking blows… through that repetition, “something” had been settling within me.
――I fight in order to fight. That hasn’t changed.
But by this point, it felt less like training and more like a “dialogue.”
(…It was supposed to just be a training partner. But after all these times, I’ve started to feel oddly attached.)
The moment I said it aloud, I found it amusing. Still, I didn’t deny it.
“Well… a monster is still a monster. Nothing more than a being that can respawn.”
The next time I reached “Constant Activity: Lv.5”—then, I would finally deliver the finishing blow.
◆
“…This might be the right place.”
North of town. Opposite from the Miasma Plain, deep in a forest.
An old, unused stone path where hardly anyone passed. Behind it, a narrow river flowed. The sound of water gently touched my eardrums.
The ability to “see magic power” was said to be a realm reached only by a few talented individuals in this world.
But I had “game knowledge.” I knew the conditions for acquiring it back in the game.
By pressing the “training command” that appeared under certain conditions. And this place matched those conditions.
The problem was that in this world, such a “command” didn’t exist.
Back in the game, I obtained “Magic Power Vision” in a place like this—a land rich in magic.
In such places, by calming the mind and sensing the flow of magic, the training command would appear. It’d then allow one to obtain it.
I sat down, raised my knees, and closed my eyes. My hands rested on my knees. I simply breathed deeply.
(This world has no UI, no buttons. But… as long as the “conditions” are met, the skill should still be obtainable.)
Quietly, deeply—I steadied my breathing.
Magic filled the air. Faintly, like the lingering scent after something burned.
Sharpening my senses, I could feel it “touching” my skin.
――I didn’t know how much time had passed.
By sensation, just a few minutes. Yet the sun’s angle had shifted slightly.
“…So, mere knowledge alone isn’t enough?”
I murmured, opening my eyes. The same trees, the same light and shadow. The world seemed unchanged.
But――
Just faintly, at the edge of my vision, something wavered. Like light refracting, pale blue like a flowing stream.
Unlike the swaying of grass in the wind, it was “flowing” from beneath the ground upward.
(…This is)
I focused. Regulated my breath once more.
Something crawled behind my retinas—a foreign sensation. Not unpleasant. Instead, it stirred the urge to “see.”
And then, in a moment――
“…!”
The world changed.
Information flooded in. It was so much it felt like the air itself had color.
Threads of magic weaving between plants. Beneath the ground, the glowing pulse of ley lines. And within myself, a drifting pale-blue core.
(I can see it…!)
In that instant, conviction etched itself into my mind.
《Skill Magic Power Vision Acquired》
《Skill: Magic Power Vision Lv.1》
I let out a breath. It had taken more nerves than expected. Yet at the same time—my lips curved faintly upward.
I stood. I stepped into the light.
The flow of magic brushed across the grasslands.
The world now seemed a little transparent.
As if I could converse with the world itself. But this wasn’t an illusion.
By acquiring this skill, I had certainly stepped into “a higher dimension.”
