“Huh?” Shen Sujie was bewildered. How did she even come to that conclusion?
Doesn’t Jiang Bieyuan know I’m just helping Fu Yanzhou pursue her? It didn’t make sense. Shen Sujie held her phone, her face etched with a look of someone trying to solve an impossible puzzle.
“I don’t,” she finally said, deciding to clear up the misunderstanding first. “I don’t love Fu Yanzhou. I have no feelings for him. The reason I’ve been mentioning him is because…”
Jiang Bieyuan had no interest in what followed. Her eyes were fixed on the line, “I don’t love Fu Yanzhou.” Seeing Shen Sujie so explicitly distance herself from him, she felt an unprecedented wave of secret delight.
The feeling was so strong that for a moment, she felt like a rat living in the shadows who had finally, in a sneaky and devious way, touched a sliver of light and goodness.
Coming back to her senses, Jiang Bieyuan’s eyes flickered. She quickly put her phone away and closed her eyes. New feelings, like relentless weeds in spring, were growing rapidly inside her, threatening to take over completely.
Jiang Bieyuan went silent again. Shen Sujie propped her face up with her hand, feeling dejected. Is she busy? Or is she so annoyed with me that she can’t even be bothered to reply?
As expected, getting close to a man brings nothing but misery. Shen Sujie wished she had just been firmer and found some excuse to get rid of Fu Yanzhou back then. But there was no turning back now. She switched hands and propped her other cheek up, finally getting so fed up with Jiang Bieyuan’s lack of response that she angrily deleted the day’s entire chat history.
Especially those nine photos of Fu Yanzhou. Shen Sujie felt an overwhelming urge to douse her phone in disinfectant.
After deleting the messages, Shen Sujie was still anxious because Jiang Bieyuan hadn’t replied. She paced nervously, knowing she had to wait for Jiang Bieyuan to get over her anger. But just in case this anger lasted for days, she decided to use her own money to buy Jiang Bieyuan another gift and a bouquet of flowers. The roses were a fiery red, bold and passionate.
Since Jiang Bieyuan was out of town and couldn’t receive them, Shen Sujie impulsively bought a plane ticket. Her day off was tomorrow, so she booked the earliest flight—departing at 12:30 AM. It would land late at night. She had no idea if Jiang Bieyuan would be awake.
Shen Sujie wanted to give her a surprise. After an afternoon of scouring news photos online, she finally found the hotel where Jiang Bieyuan was staying from a random photo a user had posted. After a quick double-check, Shen Sujie packed a small bag and headed to the airport.
“System, do you think Jiang Bieyuan is mad at me?” Shen Sujie asked, her brow furrowed with worry.
The system’s eye twitched. “I don’t think so.”
“But she’s ignoring me.” Shen Sujie waved her phone at it. “Look at all the messages I sent her, and she hasn’t replied to a single one. She’s definitely mad.”
“This is all Fu Yanzhou’s fault. If it weren’t for him, Jiang Bieyuan wouldn’t be ignoring me.”
“What does this have to do with Fu Yanzhou?” the system asked, confused. “I think she has a good impression of him. Why else would she give him such a high-tier resource?”
Isn’t the reason simple? Shen Sujie immediately came up with three. “Maybe she didn’t want to go on a date with him. Or maybe she was annoyed by him and just wanted to shut him up with a resource. Or maybe she felt he’d spent a lot of money on her, so she wanted to repay the favor…”
“Enough,” the system interrupted. “Stop trying to break up the official couple.”
Shen Sujie’s face twisted into a scowl. After all that, he’s still the official male lead? What a lucky man. She started tapping her foot in frustration. For a split second, an irrepressible impulse to rebel against the system erupted from deep within her, like a volcanic explosion. Shen Sujie closed her eyes and told herself to stay calm.
The plane took off quickly. Shen Sujie dozed off for a while and woke up just as the plane was landing. She walked out of the airport and took a taxi directly to the hotel.
Clutching the eye-catching bouquet of roses and the small gift she had specifically chosen for Jiang Bieyuan, she nervously dialed her number.
“She’s probably asleep right now. I’m a terrible person for disturbing her,” Shen Sujie muttered to herself.
The system said nothing, waiting quietly for Jiang Bieyuan to respond.
To Shen Sujie’s surprise, the call was answered quickly. Jiang Bieyuan’s voice was slightly hoarse, with a hint of fatigue. “What is it?”
Shen Sujie took a deep breath, composed herself, and nervously held her breath. “I’m at the hotel where you’re staying.”
Jiang Bieyuan’s fingers, which had been massaging her temples, stopped. She instinctively got up from her desk and walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window. Behind the curtains, a small figure stood in the empty space in front of the hotel entrance. The dim yellow light stretched her slender shadow out long and thin.
Her heart skipped a beat. Jiang Bieyuan couldn’t find the words to describe how she felt in that moment. She was only certain that a smile was spreading across her face, completely out of her control.
The body often gives the most honest reactions. Jiang Bieyuan couldn’t deny it. Her voice became lighter as she said, “Wait for me, I’m coming right down.”
After hanging up, Jiang Bieyuan rushed out of the room without even grabbing a jacket. While waiting for the elevator, her mind started to race. Why is she here? And why in the middle of the night? Does she know I was unhappy today? Or was she sent by Fu Yanzhou to annoy me all the way out here?
The thought of Fu Yanzhou made Jiang Bieyuan’s bright expression turn dark. The joy she had felt at the prospect of seeing Shen Sujie was instantly replaced by a cold splash of reality.
The elevator “dinged,” signaling its arrival. Jiang Bieyuan stared at the floor number on the display. Her legs felt like they were filled with lead, and she didn’t move. Only when the doors were about to close did she press the open button again, stepping out with her long legs.
Shen Sujie was still standing there. Unlike the distant view she’d had from her room, this time Jiang Bieyuan saw the roses in the girl’s arms at once. Roses… it’s Fu Yanzhou again. A deep coldness settled in her eyes, and her steps toward Shen Sujie felt like she was walking to an execution.
Seeing Jiang Bieyuan, Shen Sujie immediately ran toward her. The roses were heavy, and she was already a little out of breath after running such a short distance.
Facing the woman with the dark expression, Shen Sujie forced herself to show her brightest, most radiant smile. “Yuan Yuan, long time no see.”
Jiang Bieyuan stared at her, her presence as intimidating as ever.
Shen Sujie seemed oblivious and remained cheerful. “These are the roses I picked out just for you, and this is the gift I picked out just for you.” Her voice was soft and sweet. She shoved the items into Jiang Bieyuan’s arms and shamelessly held onto her arm, pleading. “I was wrong earlier today, Yuan Yuan. Please don’t be mad at me anymore, okay? I apologize and I swear it won’t happen again.”
Jiang Bieyuan stared at the flowers that Shen Sujie had forced on her, wanting nothing more than to drop them on the spot. “I don’t accept Fu Yanzhou’s gifts. Tell him to stop wasting his time…”
As she spoke, her attention was involuntarily drawn to Shen Sujie’s arm wrapped around hers. The girl’s arm was slender, with pale, delicate skin that looked like it would break with the slightest twist. Since she wasn’t wearing a jacket, their skin was touching directly, and she could feel the warmth of Shen Sujie’s body.
It was so warm against Jiang Bieyuan’s skin that half of her body felt numb.
“It’s not from Fu Yanzhou,” Shen Sujie quickly said, realizing the misunderstanding.
Jiang Bieyuan’s eyes reluctantly moved from Shen Sujie’s pale arm. She looked down at Shen Sujie, who was seriously explaining, “This is from me. I bought this for you with my own money. It has nothing to do with Fu Yanzhou.”
Then, she nervously wrung her hands and cautiously asked, “Do you like it?”
“You bought it?” And not Fu Yanzhou? After Shen Sujie gave a firm nod, Jiang Bieyuan’s gaze fell back on the fiery red roses. She could distinctly hear fireworks exploding in her mind, leaving her dizzy and euphoric, barely able to control the wild delight that was growing inside her.
For a long time, Jiang Bieyuan didn’t respond. Shen Sujie’s heart was pounding, and she was about to ask a second time when Jiang Bieyuan’s voice, noticeably lighter than before, finally sounded above her head. “Yes.”
“I like it.”
