Jiang Bieyuan’s mood seemed to improve, and Shen Sujie breathed a sigh of relief. It seemed flowers and gifts were as effective as ever at winning over a girl. She nervously held onto Jiang Bieyuan’s arm, asking tentatively, “Are you still mad at me?”
Jiang Bieyuan looked at her without answering directly. “Depends on how you act from now on.”
Shen Sujie’s pale face immediately fell. “That’s not enough to make you happy?” She scrunched up her brow, looking genuinely distressed. “Yuan Yuan, you’re so hard to please.”
“Then don’t try.” Jiang Bieyuan pulled her arm out of Shen Sujie’s grasp, her tone cool. “I didn’t ask you to come here and beg.”
“Don’t do that!” Seeing Jiang Bieyuan’s anger flare up again, Shen Sujie shamelessly latched back onto her arm. “My mouth got the best of me. I should’ve known better. It’s all my fault, so please don’t be mad.”
“Look at me. I got on a plane right after work and didn’t even have time to eat dinner.” She looked up at Jiang Bieyuan’s face, which was stunning even without makeup, with a look of wronged innocence. “So please, have a heart and forgive me just this once.”
Jiang Bieyuan immediately stopped walking. “You haven’t eaten at all?”
“Nope,” Shen Sujie said, a lie passing her lips. She hadn’t eaten dinner, not because she was busy, but because she hadn’t been hungry, and because she was in no mood to eat until she had Jiang Bieyuan calmed down. But now that she had decided to play the pity card, she made herself sound as miserable as possible.
“Yuan Yuan, I’m so hungry I can barely walk,” Shen Sujie complained, clinging to Jiang Bieyuan like an octopus. “So, please bear with me and let me lean on you a little more. Don’t let me slide to the ground.”
Shen Sujie’s voice was soft and sweet as she shamelessly flirted with Jiang Bieyuan.
Jiang Bieyuan looked at her, a hint of helplessness in her eyes. The girl was clinging to her like she had no bones, putting her full weight on her. They were so close that Jiang Bieyuan could see Shen Sujie in a very intimate light. Her gaze lingered on Shen Sujie’s delicate nose and her full, red lips, which were coated in a thin layer of glossy balm, making them look as tempting as a jelly.
Jiang Bieyuan had a hard time dealing with her. Shen Sujie was light, so her weight wasn’t a problem, but Jiang Bieyuan still stopped walking. “You can’t even walk this short distance?” she asked, her voice tinged with a strange mix of emotions.
“Nope.” Shen Sujie nodded, tilting her pale face up to Jiang Bieyuan with a playful pout. “I can’t move at all. These heels are killing my feet.”
Jiang Bieyuan glanced at Shen Sujie’s pink heels and, after a brief standoff, handed the roses and gift back to her. “Hold these.”
Shen Sujie was confused, but under Jiang Bieyuan’s assertive demeanor, she took the items, her sparkling eyes fixed on Jiang Bieyuan with a quizzical look.
Jiang Bieyuan’s movements were swift and decisive. In an instant, she lifted Shen Sujie into her arms. Shen Sujie gasped, instinctively tightening her grip on the things in her arms. Her eyes widened as she stared at Jiang Bieyuan’s expressionless face. “Yuan Yuan!”
“You said your feet hurt and you couldn’t walk,” Jiang Bieyuan said, looking down at her. Even from this awkward angle, she was breathtakingly captivating. “I’ll carry you.”
Shen Sujie belatedly realized that Jiang Bieyuan’s gesture was an act of genuine kindness, but… she had only complained about her feet to get sympathy, not to be carried in public! Jiang Bieyuan was kind and considerate, but she was also a bit of a ditz. Shen Sujie was just as dazed as she was, holding the flowers and staring blankly.
She could feel the subtle shift in Jiang Bieyuan’s muscles as she moved. Jiang Bieyuan’s arms were strong, giving her a deep sense of security. She felt stable in her arms, not jostled at all. Shen Sujie instinctively tried to squirm a little, but Jiang Bieyuan’s look told her not to move.
Shen Sujie’s limbs immediately went stiff, and she didn’t dare to struggle again. She comforted herself with the thought that it was late, and there weren’t many people around, so the chances of someone seeing her in this embarrassing state were slim. Jiang Bieyuan was being so kind; she couldn’t just ruin their newly improved relationship, could she?
The girl in her arms had her eyes tightly shut, her face buried in the bouquet of flowers. Jiang Bieyuan entered the elevator, glanced at her, and her voice, a low rasp, broke the silence. “Press the button.”
Shen Sujie immediately lifted her face out of the flowers. “Which floor?”
“Thirty.”
Shen Sujie’s heart skipped a beat. That high?!
Her finger trembled as she pressed the button for the floor. In the quiet of the elevator, she felt completely awkward. After a long internal struggle, she hesitantly said to Jiang Bieyuan, “Maybe… you should put me down. I must be getting heavy for you…”
“You’re not heavy,” Jiang Bieyuan said simply, cutting off all of Shen Sujie’s excuses.
Shen Sujie couldn’t help but purse her lips, and in a daze, she asked the system, “Now do you realize your Sister Yuan is acting strange?”
“Is she?” The system had been shocked by Jiang Bieyuan’s actions at least eight hundred times over, but it stubbornly stuck to its story. “Didn’t you hint that she should carry you?”
“I admit I played the pity card, but I didn’t hint for her to do something so… intimate!” Shen Sujie protested, refusing to be blamed. “She’s the one…”
“But since you said what you did, could my beautiful and kind Sister Yuan just stand there and watch your feet hurt? She is my precious female lead, after all. She’s perfect in every way—morally, intellectually, physically, and artistically. She’s flawless,” the system said proudly.
“I know, but you’re missing the point,” Shen Sujie argued. “I’m not arguing about how good of a person Jiang Bieyuan is. I’m worried about her behavior right now, with her carrying me in her arms…”
Their argument was cut short by Jiang Bieyuan’s voice. Holding Shen Sujie in her arms, she stood at the door of her hotel room, her voice a little shaky but full of conviction. “I was in such a hurry to leave, I forgot my key card.”
“Huh?” Shen Sujie was stunned. “What do we do now?”
“I’ll call someone to bring one up,” Jiang Bieyuan said, finally putting Shen Sujie down. She quickly called the front desk. The receptionist answered right away. “Don’t worry, I’ll send a key card up to you right away. Please wait a moment.”
Shen Sujie listened quietly. When the call ended, she realized a moment later that a scorching gaze had landed on her. She felt her scalp prickle and slowly looked up at Jiang Bieyuan. Before she could react, a tall, dark silhouette, with an aura so powerful it made her knees weak, leaned down, wrapping her in a bubble of air so tight she could barely breathe.
Shen Sujie instinctively tried to back away, but Jiang Bieyuan forcefully held her in place, pinning her in the cramped, intimate space between herself and the door. “Why are you running?” Jiang Bieyuan’s voice was low and dangerous. “Am I going to eat you?”
