“No… not really.”
Shen Sujie turned her head, instinctively avoiding the warm, gentle breath that Jiang Bieyuan had unconsciously exhaled near her lips. A shiver ran through her, and she confessed, “I just feel like…”
She swallowed hard, a mix of panic and nervousness making her scalp tingle. “Things are getting a little too intimate between us right now.”
Jiang Bieyuan’s face, a picture of flawless, detached beauty, betrayed no emotion. At her words, his long, captivating eyes narrowed slightly, a sharp, appraising look entering his gaze. The woman was clearly taken aback, as if she never expected such a direct statement to come from Shen Sujie’s rosy lips. For a moment, she seemed unsure how to react. “You think things are ‘intimate’ between us?”
Shen Sujie met Jiang Bieyuan’s gaze, her eyes wavering. After a moment of internal debate, she slowly shook her head. She wasn’t an idiot. She could hear the faint, dangerous undertone lurking within Jiang Bieyuan’s cool voice. Worse, her mind was now racing with regret over her decision to fly here tonight.
What did the conflict between Jiang Bieyuan and Fu Yanzhou have to do with her, a jaded ex-girlfriend? In a few days, or maybe a few months at most, the hero and heroine would likely make up and be happy again. She was just a disposable ex-girlfriend—there was absolutely no reason for her to be trying to find a sense of presence in front of Jiang Bieyuan. Shen Sujie frowned, consumed by the regret of her pointless, self-imposed journey.
Lost in her thoughts, she didn’t register Jiang Bieyuan’s next words, so she didn’t respond in time.
A dark shadow fell over Jiang Bieyuan’s eyes, and in an instant, her arms tightened around Shen Sujie, her harmless composure now completely gone. A sudden, oppressive aura emanated from her, startling Shen Sujie back to reality.
This was getting more and more unsettling. Jiang Bieyuan’s eyes were slightly red-rimmed, her gaze as deep and dark as obsidian, filled with a terrifying possessiveness that threatened to devour Shen Sujie whole. She trembled on the spot, with no time to question the system about Jiang Bieyuan’s strange behavior. Her only instinct was to flee.
But Jiang Bieyuan was faster. She used her height advantage to her benefit, pinning Shen Sujie tightly between her body and the door, leaving her no room to escape. The abrupt proximity brought the faint, elegant scent of Jiang Bieyuan flooding over Shen Sujie’s skin, like an army of devouring ants, gnawing at her nerves until she was left trembling and helpless, almost on the verge of a soft, bone-deep moan.
Shen Sujie’s mind went blank, struggling to comprehend Jiang Bieyuan’s intentions. Just as the increasingly intimate atmosphere between them intensified, a sense of pure desperation made her call out to the system:
“System, things have gotten to this point—don’t you think you owe me a rational explanation?”
The system went silent, playing dead.
Shen Sujie’s temper began to flare. She was persistent, and just as she was about to completely lose her cool, the system finally, haltingly, emitted a shocked noise.
“Host, can I just say—I have no idea what’s going on either?!”
As if that weren’t enough to convey its utter shock, a wide-eyed, flabbergasted emoji-like face slowly materialized in front of Shen Sujie. Clearly, even the system hadn’t anticipated Jiang Bieyuan’s astounding actions. The same expression of disbelief and collapse was plastered on both the system and Shen Sujie’s faces. It was clear that Jiang Bieyuan’s behavior was a nuclear-level shock to this novice system. Shen Sujie watched as the system’s whole “body” seemed to warp and twist, as if it were about to be scared into an entirely new shape.
Shen Sujie fell into a prolonged silence. “…”
If even the system didn’t understand Jiang Bieyuan’s current logic, Shen Sujie felt even more lost. She was so consumed by her thoughts that she didn’t move for a long time—until a soft, warm breath brushed against her lips. Her heart hammered in her chest, and she was so startled that she instantly raised a hand to stop Jiang Bieyuan.
“Yuan Yuan, we can’t do this.”
A faint sheen of moisture appeared in her dark eyes, and the soft light from the top of the hallway chandelier scattered across them, creating a mesmerizing, rippling effect. It was excessively alluring.
“We…” Shen Sujie hesitated. “We’re over.”
“I was a terrible person; I was so awful to you. And now, I’m not even half the person you are. Next to your brilliance, I’m just a vile cockroach scurrying in the dark,” Shen Sujie said, taking a deep breath and looking up with a firm expression. “So, we should keep our distance. Just like before.”
As slow as Shen Sujie was, she could more or less figure out Jiang Bieyuan’s intentions by now. In truth, Jiang Bieyuan’s feelings had always been easy to read. In the ambiguous space of “exes,” even a simple, detached breath from Jiang Bieyuan could make the atmosphere between them inexplicably tense—or charged. It was awkward, it was seductive; it was just plain wrong.
Shen Sujie had never considered this possibility before, not until tonight, when Jiang Bieyuan completely stopped trying to hide her feelings. They were excessively blatant and unrestrained. But just a moment ago, Jiang Bieyuan had seemed perfectly normal, with no hint of wanting to get back together.
So, when exactly did her love for Qiao Weiwei suddenly rekindle?
Shen Sujie’s face was a blank slate of confusion. Noticing that Shen Sujie had started to space out and her pupils were unfocused while she politely rejected her, Jiang Bieyuan gave up on trying to hold back her feelings and leaned in to kiss her.
Shen Sujie was completely trapped, her slender shoulders firmly held by Jiang Bieyuan’s hands. The woman’s grip was powerful, and Shen Sujie could barely move. She had no choice but to let Jiang Bieyuan’s lips press against her own.
The touch was strange, yet it held a hint of careful, tender compassion and softness. Shen Sujie’s mind went blank, and she instinctively held her breath, her heart nearly stopping at Jiang Bieyuan’s sudden move. As Jiang Bieyuan drew closer, Shen Sujie reflexively clenched her jaw, but her teeth were quickly, forcefully pried apart. Her defensive action must have enraged Jiang Bieyuan, because the kiss grew heavy, overwhelmingly dominant. The intense kiss almost made Shen Sujie dizzy. In a few seconds, she began to find it hard to breathe.
Jiang Bieyuan was constantly, sensitively monitoring her reaction. As soon as she felt the person in her arms go soft and on the verge of collapsing, she released her just in time. The forceful kiss became a gentle brush against Shen Sujie’s lips, a light, fleeting touch, like a dragonfly skimming the surface of the water.
It was soft and tender, sparking a different kind of intimate, dizzying feeling.
Shen Sujie’s mind was completely frozen. She was barely breathing, her eyes dazed, as she watched Jiang Bieyuan’s expression return to normal and saw her politely accept a spare key card from a hotel staff member, even thanking them politely. She was too weak to react. Her fingers lightly pressed against Jiang Bieyuan’s stomach, feeling as if all the strength had been drained from her body, replaced by another, indescribably wonderful sensation that overtook all her senses.
Jiang Bieyuan successfully opened the door with the key card and pulled Shen Sujie into the room.
Shen Sujie suddenly sensed danger and immediately tried to struggle away, but Jiang Bieyuan’s strength was overwhelming. She instantly held her in place. “Be good now. Don’t move.”
The excessively gentle tone sent a shiver down Shen Sujie’s spine, and a bad premonition began to surface from the depths of her heart. She could more or less guess what Jiang Bieyuan was about to do to her, and she felt completely lost.
In her confusion, Shen Sujie once again turned to the system.
“Dear System, by the time you receive this voice message, I will have already successfully replaced the male lead…”
Her nonsense words snapped the system back to its senses, and after fully processing Jiang Bieyuan’s strange behavior and intentions, the entire system completely broke down. “Aahhhhhhh! Shut up!”
“Shen Sujie! I’m going to kill you!”
