The system was truly infuriated by its rebellious host. It huffed and puffed, crossing its arms and threatening her fiercely. “Go on, live it up! Let’s see how you explain failing the mission to the higher-ups later!”
Shen Sujie remained unfazed. “My mission is to play the ‘tragic but strong’ heroine’s ex-girlfriend, Qiao Weiwei, and turn over a new leaf. I’m supposed to help the hero and heroine’s relationship develop so the heroine can have a happy, wonderful life.”
“I’ve already given the heroine happiness, so half of my mission is complete.”
“As for the other half…” Shen Sujie asked innocently, in a way that turned black to white, “Who said the ‘hero’ has to be a man, and not a woman?”
The system: “!” What the hell?! Is that even a human thing to say? The hero’s not a man? So what, they’re a woman?
The system felt its bl00d pressure spike instantly. It took a deep breath, pinching its nose. “Fine, fine. You’re going to be unreasonable and make no sense, are you?”
“You just wait…”
Before it could finish its threat, Shen Sujie launched a second attack. “System, you’re a little too obsessed with men.”
“You’re so protective of Fu Yanzhou and so fond of him, you might as well change your name to ‘Simp System.’ How are you going to save the tragic but strong heroine’s story?”
Shen Sujie looked at the system with a serious expression. “You keep saying you want to save Jiang Bieyuan and make her happy, but you believe the only way for Jiang Bieyuan to be happy and become a winner in life is to be dependent on Fu Yanzhou.”
“You think a woman’s meaning and value can only be proven by her dependence on a man—no matter how terrible or immoral that man is. Isn’t that right?”
“You love Fu Yanzhou far more than you love Jiang Bieyuan. In your mind, Fu Yanzhou is your real child, and Jiang Bieyuan is more like your daughter-in-law. That’s why your thinking is so twisted and why you have such demanding requirements for her.”
“Do you really believe that with Jiang Bieyuan’s ambition and capability, she wouldn’t be better off and happier without Fu Yanzhou?”
“You know that all of Jiang Bieyuan’s suffering in this entire book came from Fu Yanzhou, yet you refuse to reflect. You’re so feudal and rigid in your demand that Jiang Bieyuan give up everything that belongs to her, including her healthy personality and free will, all for Fu Yanzhou. What’s in it for her?”
“Is she so lovesick, so used to a life of luxury, that she’ll abandon her own opportunities to help a man in need, suffer for him, and become a background character for some strange man? She’s the heroine, not a brainless idiot.”
Shen Sujie’s words were pointed and utterly damning, leaving the system speechless. It floated dumbly in the air, its expression blank and foolish.
After a flawless speech, Shen Sujie’s pale lips curved into a soft smile. Her voice became that of a bewitching devil. “But I’m different from you,” she whispered into the system’s ear. “I genuinely like Jiang Bieyuan, and I truly want her to have a good life.”
“In this world, no one loves Jiang Bieyuan more than I do, and no one is more suited to be by her side.”
“I will help her solve her problems. I will use every advantage I have to help her reach the top, instead of making her lower herself and rely on a man, becoming his accessory. So tell me, System—”
“Didn’t I do a beautiful job completing the mission?”
“Beautiful…” the system replied, without thinking.
Shen Sujie nodded with satisfaction. “Good. Now, go play by yourself. I have more conquering to do.”
The system nodded reflexively, then obediently floated to the side, no longer bothering Shen Sujie. But after sulking in a corner for a while, it suddenly realized something. The more it thought about what Shen Sujie had said, the more wrong it seemed. After two full hours of deep thought, its eyes widened in a sudden realization.
Its host was simply after Jiang Bieyuan’s good looks and wanted to steal her away from Fu Yanzhou! All that talk about loving Jiang Bieyuan and wanting to make her happy was just a bunch of nonsense! It rose in a fury, determined to confront Shen Sujie. But Shen Sujie, after a night of blissful passion, had already been coaxed to sleep by Jiang Bieyuan.
The system: “…” So frustrated. It had never felt so utterly stifled in its life.
Since it couldn’t wake Shen Sujie, it hesitated for a moment, looking at Jiang Bieyuan. After a long internal struggle, it decided to leave Shen Sujie for now and follow Jiang Bieyuan for the day. Whether or not she was dependent on a man wasn’t important. What mattered was Jiang Bieyuan’s heart, and who she truly favored. As long as Jiang Bieyuan still had feelings for Fu Yanzhou, even ten Shen Sujies couldn’t stop the system from bringing them together and leading them to the altar.
Shen Sujie knew the system wouldn’t give up easily. It was, after all, a romance novel system; how could a few simple words change its deep-seated ideology? She didn’t have a way to deal with the system, but she had plenty of ways to seduce Jiang Bieyuan. Would a person who had just tasted such rich sweetness be willing to go back to a bland, ascetic life? Shen Sujie didn’t think so.
When Shen Sujie woke up, Jiang Bieyuan was no longer in the hotel room. She was likely in a meeting. Shen Sujie lay in bed and scrolled through her phone for a bit, then ordered some breakfast. The room service was quick. Shen Sujie casually grabbed a hair tie and pulled her hair into a low bun. Midway through her meal, she received a frantic series of calls from Fu Yanzhou. “Where are you right now? I need you to get here in the next half-hour.”
“I’m afraid I can’t,” Shen Sujie said, lazily sipping her soy milk and narrowing her eyes in refusal. “I’m out of town.” She couldn’t resist reminding Fu Yanzhou, “And today is my day off.” What kind of terrible boss doesn’t let you rest on the weekend?
“I don’t care,” Fu Yanzhou said, one hand in his pocket, automatically ignoring Shen Sujie’s answer. “Whether you take a taxi or a plane, I order you to get back immediately. Something very important has come up.”
Shen Sujie was at a loss for words. “I still can’t get there in half an hour.”
Fu Yanzhou choked, his mood suddenly turning irritable. Shen Sujie took another sip of soy milk, and just as she was about to speak, she heard the sound of a key in the door lock behind her. Her eyes darted over, and she immediately switched to a meek, obedient tone. “Fu-ge, do you really need me to come over right now?”
“It’s not that I can’t…” she said, deliberately putting the phone on speaker on the table. “If you’re willing to wait for me, I’ll go buy a ticket for the next high-speed train right away…”
As she was speaking, footsteps quickly approached from behind her, and the phone she had intentionally placed in a noticeable spot was picked up by a woman’s slender, elegant hand.
*******
The moment Jiang Bieyuan returned to the hotel, she saw Shen Sujie secretly talking to Fu Yanzhou. Not only that, but she was so compliant, ready to leave her on the spot for him. Her temper flared.
Fu Yanzhou. It was always Fu Yanzhou, who was haunting her.
The coldness in her eyes was palpable. When Fu Yanzhou’s incessant voice came through the phone again, she could no longer hold back her anger. Her voice was icy as she spoke into the phone: “She’s here with me.”
“Is there something you need?”
