- Chapter 2 - Becoming Love Rivals with the “Phoenix Man” Top Star (Part 2)
Silence stretched for several seconds.
In those few moments, under Jiang Beiyuan’s quiet, cool gaze, an awkward, unsettling tension bloomed between them.
Hearing Shen Sujie’s words, Jiang Beiyuan instinctively looked down, her eyes tracing the line of Shen Sujie’s legs, encased in a low-rise leather A-line skirt. They were beautiful—pale, smooth, and gracefully slim yet firm. The sight of them was enough to make a person’s breath catch in their throat.
Qiao Weiwei truly had a gift for temptation. Her waist was impossibly slender, looking soft and pliant, like a willow branch that could be wrapped around with a single hand.
Now, those same innocent, pitiful eyes were fixed on her, making her small face even more stunning and otherworldly.
This was Qiao Weiwei’s usual coquettish routine, but Jiang Beiyuan, who had learned her lesson the hard way, felt nothing. She didn’t even bother to pull away, instead leaning in with an even more powerful aura. “How obedient could you possibly be?”
A smile touched Jiang Beiyuan’s lips, but it was cold, laced with mockery and biting sarcasm.
It was a deep, stinging pain, just like the one Qiao Weiwei had inflicted upon her in the past.
Shen Sujie’s breath hitched. A moment ago, her cheeks were flushed; now they were pale and bloodless. Her expression was filled with guilt and remorse. “If you’ll just forgive me, I’ll do anything you ask.”
The girl’s lips trembled slightly, making her seem fragile enough to shatter.
“Anything?” Jiang Beiyuan repeated the words slowly, taking in the faint, uninvited fragrance, with its subtle, lingering allure just like the passionate Qiao Weiwei she first met.
That was a vibrant, youthful energy Jiang Beiyuan had never possessed but had always longed for.
The memory vanished as quickly as it came. The tenderness and nostalgia on the woman’s face were gone in a flash, as if they had been a mere illusion. Jiang Beiyuan lowered her eyes, looking at Shen Sujie once more. Her gaze was neither warm nor cold—just distant and flat, as if Shen Sujie were a complete stranger. “In that case, you can be my mole. Go infiltrate Fu Yanzhou’s circle and find out what he really wants from me.”
“Huh?”
Shen Sujie froze for a moment, then pointed to herself. “Me? You want me to be your eyes and ears and spy on Fu Yanzhou?”
“What? You don’t want to?” Jiang Beiyuan’s face remained expressionless.
“No, no, I do!” Seeing the woman turn to leave, Shen Sujie scrambled to agree, nodding her head vigorously. “I’m willing, I am. Forget spying on Fu Yanzhou. I’d assassinate him for you if you asked.”
“Don’t worry. Even if I get caught afterward, I’d never rat you out.”
Her answer was so shocking that Jiang Beiyuan gave her a look that was impossible to decipher. “Get ready now. I’ll arrange for you to see Fu Yanzhou right away.”
So fast? Shen Sujie wanted to ask if she could at least rest for a day, but under Jiang Beiyuan’s chilly stare, she gave up the fight. “…Okay.”
Jiang Beiyuan acted quickly, and it wasn’t long before Shen Sujie’s phone rang with a call from Fu Yanzhou’s manager.
She glanced at Jiang Beiyuan with a mix of emotions, then answered the phone in front of her. “Okay, I’ll be there soon. It’s not far, about a thirty-minute drive.”
After a few minutes, Shen Sujie hung up. Before she could say anything, Jiang Beiyuan spoke. “I’ll give you a ride.”
Is she really that desperate to know about Fu Yanzhou?
Probably influenced by Qiao Weiwei’s feelings, Shen Sujie felt a bubbling sourness in her heart. Just then, the system excitedly popped up.
“Host, this is a golden opportunity to get Sister Yuan and Fu Yanzhou together!”
“Once you’re with Fu Yanzhou, you need to step up for Sister Yuan and whip him into shape. Make him learn ‘male virtues’ and quickly become a model husband and father. Think of it as your last hurrah as the scumbag ex-girlfriend.”
Shen Sujie’s mind went blank. What am I, a dog trainer?
She was so full of complaints, yet she couldn’t voice a single one, leaving her looking lost in thought. Jiang Beiyuan’s gaze swept over her faintly, maintaining her cold, aloof demeanor.
Jiang Beiyuan was a woman of few words, and Shen Sujie, busy plotting out the details of her new mission, was equally quiet. The silence between them was almost unnerving.
Lost in her own thoughts, she didn’t hear a sound until a crisp, cool voice broke through. “We’re here.”
Shen Sujie looked up instinctively and saw the grand, luxurious office building of an entertainment company. After a moment of internal awe, she discreetly unbuckled her seatbelt. “I’ll get out now.”
Once on her feet, she grabbed her bag and turned back, giving Jiang Beiyuan a bright, radiant smile. “Miss Jiang, don’t forget to take me off your blacklist!”
Her tone was light and cheerful, showing no trace of the furious, thunderous rage she’d felt when she first discovered Jiang Beiyuan had blocked her.
Jiang Beiyuan’s gaze deepened. She didn’t refuse. “Alright.”
With that confirmation, Shen Sujie took a deep breath and entered the towering office building. After explaining the situation at the front desk, someone immediately came to lead her to a conference room on one of the upper floors.
She sat in a chair for a while, expecting to be met by Fu Yanzhou’s manager. When she finally turned, she was surprised to find Fu Yanzhou himself.
She was taken aback but didn’t show it. “Mr. Fu.”
“So you’re my Yuanyuan’s ex-girlfriend?” Fu Yanzhou asked, his hands in his pockets, looking down at Shen Sujie.
Yuanyuan? How chummy. Shen Sujie grumbled inwardly, but she simply nodded with an honest expression. “That’s right.” Then, she tentatively began, “I saw the news today and thought…”
“Your guess is correct. That’s precisely why I’ve brought you in.” Fu Yanzhou scrutinized Shen Sujie. “Since you’re Yuanyuan’s ex-girlfriend, you must know what she likes very well.”
“So from now on, your job is to please and win over Yuanyuan on my behalf.”
“The flowers she likes, the gifts she wants, the things she wants to do. You’ll get them all for her in my name. You’ll invite her out until we successfully cultivate a relationship.”
To be fair, Fu Yanzhou wasn’t bad-looking. He had a strong brow, piercing eyes, a high-bridged nose, and a chiseled jawline. His face was a work of art.
But Shen Sujie just couldn’t bring herself to like him.
She pursed her lips, and finally, she couldn’t help but ask the question that had been bothering her. “And what happens after I help you build a relationship?”
Fu Yanzhou looked at her, surprised. “I thought you already knew the answer to that.”
“…” Well, this is the life of a damned tool.
Accepting her fate, Shen Sujie sincerely asked, “When do I start?”
“Right now,” Fu Yanzhou said, giving her a condescending look. He was slightly disappointed to see no extra emotion on her face. “Go ahead and order a bouquet of flowers for Yuanyuan.”
Shen Sujie began rattling off questions. “What kind of flowers? What’s the budget? What color…”
She was cut off impatiently by Fu Yanzhou. “Don’t you know Yuanyuan very well? Why do I have to worry about a small thing like this?”
“So you mean: the color, the style, and everything else will be completely up to me from now on?” Shen Sujie was shocked.
“Yes. And not just the flowers, but all the other gifts, too,” Fu Yanzhou said impatiently. “Anything that doesn’t absolutely require my presence, you’ll handle entirely. I’m busy with my acting, and I don’t have the time for all this.”
Shen Sujie understood now. Fu Yanzhou wanted to pursue Jiang Beiyuan but didn’t want to spend too much energy on it for fear of hindering his career. So, he’d specially hired her, Jiang Beiyuan’s ex-girlfriend, to do his courtship for him.
What a scummy move.
She couldn’t help but ask the system with genuine confusion, “Is there really any point in training a male lead like this? He won’t even take the time to order flowers for your Sister Yuan himself.”
The system replied: “Exactly! That’s why you have to work even harder to change him, to turn him into a considerate, loving husband who knows how to care for her. The organization has high expectations for you, so get to it!”
Shen Sujie let out a string of curses under her breath. In the time she’d been talking to the system, Fu Yanzhou had already left. His assistant walked in and said, “Go ahead and buy the stuff. Remember to keep all the receipts. We’ll reimburse you next month.”
Shen Sujie was baffled. Do I have to pay to work here?
She immediately protested. The assistant looked at her, then, unable to get his way, reluctantly transferred her ten thousand yuan, his face turned sour. “Remember to pay me back next month.”
“He’s so cheap,” Shen Sujie grumbled, grabbing at her hair in frustration. She then carefully selected and ordered a bouquet of dusky pink Cappuccino roses for Jiang Beiyuan.
Once the flowers arrived, she cradled the beautiful bouquet and called Jiang Beiyuan. “Fu Yanzhou asked me to get you some flowers. Where are you? I’ll bring them to you.”
“Don’t bother,” Jiang Beiyuan’s refusal was instant. “Just deal with anything he sends yourself from now on.”
Shen Sujie hesitated. “…Is that really a good idea? It seems like such a heartfelt gesture from him.”
“Not a good idea?” Jiang Beiyuan’s cold voice came through the phone. “Qiao Weiwei, are you so eager to see your ex accept the affections of another man?”
“No,” Shen Sujie said truthfully, shaking her head. “Because I would get secretly jealous and want to go mad. You have no idea how heartbroken I was when Fu Yanzhou asked me to buy you flowers. If I could, I’d give that detestable face of his a good punch.”
Silence fell on Jiang Beiyuan’s end. Shen Sujie pulled the phone away and saw that the call had been disconnected.
She frowned, confused, then looked down at the beautiful flowers in her arms. After a moment of hesitation, she couldn’t bring herself to throw them away. “I’ll just take them home.”
Shen Sujie muttered to herself.
Jiang Beiyuan hadn’t left. Her eyes followed the snow-white-skinned girl as she walked out of the skyscraper. With her curly hair and the sunlight falling around her, she looked as though she belonged to a different painting altogether.
The soft light shifted with her hurried movements, and the lovely black pupils in her eyes became fluid and expressive, brimming with feeling.
Every gesture and smile was captivating.
For a moment, Jiang Beiyuan’s gaze lost focus, and she felt as if her heart had stopped.
Snapping back to reality, she started her car and fled the scene.
