- Chapter 23.2 - Becoming Love Rivals with the “Phoenix Man” Top Star (Part 23.2)
Fu Yanzhou has been having a terrible time lately. Jiang Bieyuan’s campaign to blacklist him was the first time in his life that he had felt so overwhelmed and trapped, as if his feet were stuck in a swamp. He was also furious at his rivals for kicking him when he was down.
In just a few days, his face had broken out in pimples and his skin had become noticeably dull and rough. Normally, he would have rushed to a salon to fix his appearance, but he couldn’t spare the time now. He was busy calling one old fling after another, spewing empty flattery until his throat was sore.
But his old lovers, wary of the power of the Jiang family that backed Jiang Bieyuan, were unwilling to risk their own security for a plaything like Fu Yanzhou, who could easily be replaced. The entertainment industry had no shortage of young, handsome guys. They were wealthy, not stupid, and there was no need to put all their eggs in Fu Yanzhou’s basket. Just yesterday, through a mutual acquaintance, they had met a trainee who looked about 60-70% like Fu Yanzhou but was seven years younger. He was naive, innocent, obedient, and clean. Just a few crass jokes or a slightly inappropriate comment, and his face would turn red like a baboon’s butt. This completely satisfied their perverted tastes. With a new man to keep them company, why would they bother with an old, has-been actor like Fu Yanzhou, whose reputation was in tatters and who couldn’t provide any emotional value anymore?
So, after Fu Yanzhou’s repeated harassment, the rich women tacitly blacklisted him. When Fu Yanzhou used his network to find out what had happened, his face went completely dark. He never expected to be the first one to be kicked to the curb. He immediately went to his agent for help, but the agent was evasive, saying the matter was complicated and that Fu Yanzhou would have to find a way to get Jiang Bieyuan to stop blacklisting him.
Jiang Bieyuan. It was always Jiang Bieyuan.
Fu Yanzhou’s face was as black as a pot. After smashing a bunch of things in his apartment, he finally calmed down and thought of the most direct person who had a conflict of interest with Jiang Bieyuan: Chen Wanling.
Chen Wanling had married an old man in his fifties or sixties for his money, so her motives were obvious. She couldn’t possibly be in love with old Mr. Jiang, could she?
So Fu Yanzhou made up his mind. He asked his agent to get Chen Wanling’s phone number and promised her all kinds of fake benefits, pulling her into his camp. He figured that to have risen to the top among so many women, Chen Wanling must have a trick or two up her sleeve. But when he finally got her feedback, he wasn’t so sure.
“Why did you give up so quickly?” Fu Yanzhou said, practically grinding his teeth. “Go and persuade her more. Even if she asks for five or ten million, just agree to it.”
“I’ll pay for it,” he said grandly.
Chen Wanling, a woman with great composure, couldn’t help but roll her eyes at his words. “If it were you, would you give up a long-term meal ticket like Jiang Bieyuan for a short-term profit of a few million?”
Fu Yanzhou fell silent.
“You wouldn’t, and neither will Qiao Weiwei. You’re not stupid, and Qiao Weiwei is even less so. She knows better than you what’s more important.”
Jiang Bieyuan was so perfect. Beautiful, talented, and—most importantly—she loved Qiao Weiwei. Even after Qiao Weiwei had dumped her once for being poor, she still loved her. After taking the money and leaving Jiang Bieyuan, where else could Qiao Weiwei find a lover so rich and loyal? The chances were smaller than winning the lottery.
Chen Wanling thought Fu Yanzhou was a bit simple-minded. She didn’t have the patience to argue with him, so she was direct. “You need to calm down. Come back to me when you have a new and useful plan.”
“Otherwise, don’t bother me again.”
The woman was decisive. She hung up without a second thought, leaving Fu Yanzhou holding his phone, gnashing his teeth. Bother her? If he weren’t in such a desperate situation, he would have loved to show her what he was capable of.
In the end, Fu Yanzhou only stood his ground for a few seconds before giving up. Chen Wanling was useless, his agent had turned a blind eye, and his company couldn’t offer him any support. Who else could he rely on now? Fu Yanzhou thought for a while, his expression grim. Finally, as if swallowing a fly, he wrote down a name on a piece of paper: Qiao Weiwei.
Now, the only person he could turn to was Qiao Weiwei. Jiang Bieyuan loved Qiao Weiwei, so she would listen to her. If Qiao Weiwei would just say a few good words for him, he could get through this. But did he really want to go to Qiao Weiwei?
She was just an assistant with no power or influence. She was stepping all over him just because of Jiang Bieyuan’s temporary fondness for her. Did he really have to bow down to a woman like that, begging her to let him go? It felt humiliating.
He didn’t act immediately. He had a feeling that his luck hadn’t run out just yet. He would wait. Maybe something new would come up.
It had to be said that Jiang Bieyuan’s methods were exactly what Shen Sujie wanted. She blacklisted the male lead without a moment’s hesitation. Shen Sujie scrolled through the news about Fu Yanzhou, so happy she opened a bottle of champagne. The system circled Shen Sujie, looking worried. It wanted to say something, but knew Shen Sujie would just argue with it. Finally, it gave up and accepted its fate. Oh well, the male lead would figure something out. It was up to him to come to his senses and come beg the host for help.
The system sighed, feeling a sense of deep disappointment. It felt like the male lead was a lost cause. A male lead, and still so useless? If this kept up, it was going to become a pro-female-lead system. It would be less work, and its system life would be years longer.
Shen Sujie slowly sipped her wine, confident that Fu Yanzhou would eventually come to her. He was too ambitious to give up now. He had endured so much hardship and humiliation before, so why wouldn’t he be able to handle a few minutes of bowing to her? Fu Yanzhou was just too proud to admit defeat right now. It had only been a few days, and his punching bag of an assistant had already become someone he had to carefully woo. No matter how much he could endure, he must have been in a terrible mood.
Shen Sujie wasn’t in a hurry at all. She had all the time in the world to wait for Fu Yanzhou to come around. After all, she wasn’t the one suffering.
Fu Yanzhou seemed determined to hold out for as long as possible. Shen Sujie lay on her beach chair, bored, and scrolled through her phone. “So much courage,” she said.
The system knew exactly what she was implying. It lifted its eyelid lazily, not wanting to deal with Shen Sujie. “A little courage, but not much,” it thought. It could already picture Fu Yanzhou breaking down in tears and running to Shen Sujie to beg for forgiveness in a couple of days, destroyed by Jiang Bieyuan’s blacklisting. It sighed. What could it do? The original plot was set up to be “a powerful woman and a weak man.”
As Shen Sujie was calculating how long Fu Yanzhou could hold out, a faint shadow suddenly fell over her. She instinctively opened her eyes, and before she could see what was in front of her, a flurry of kisses landed on her lips. Jiang Bieyuan was kissing her passionately, but Shen Sujie pushed her away.
The woman’s eyes darkened as she stared at the girl’s flawless skin, her beautiful features, and her charming allure. A wave of jealousy washed over her. “Why were you looking at Fu Yanzhou again?” she asked, her voice laced with bitterness. “Do you have feelings for him?”
“You worked for him for so long, and he’s so tall, handsome, and talented in the eyes of young girls…” Jiang Bieyuan’s resentful expression was palpable. “Are you secretly a fan of his, just like his other staff members?”
Shen Sujie: “?” The jealousy of a woman in love was terrifying. Jiang Bieyuan’s guess made her shiver. “No,” she said.
Shen Sujie sat up and lightly pecked Jiang Bieyuan like a woodpecker. “I was just checking the results of all the effort you put in for me.” She kissed Jiang Bieyuan as she spoke, completely dazing her. “I’m very satisfied with the result.”
“I’m also very happy that you were willing to do all of this for me.” Shen Sujie’s eyes curved in a smile, and a single glance at Jiang Bieyuan was captivating. “Does this mean that I’m important to you now?”
Jiang Bieyuan couldn’t remain rational in the face of Shen Sujie’s seduction. She didn’t hear a word Shen Sujie said. She just nodded subconsciously when Shen Sujie finished, as if to prove she was paying attention. But then Shen Sujie went too far. The woman couldn’t hold back anymore. She picked Shen Sujie up and carried her into the bedroom.
The system, which had been watching the entire scene from above, went silent.
“…”
What a world. What was this fox spirit doing to its sweet little heroine in broad daylight? It felt like its mind was collapsing. It watched as strange noises began to come from the room, and it covered its ears. It figured that, it must have been completely wrong about Shen Sujie. It now believed Shen Sujie’s plan was to use any and all means to get into a relationship with the tragic but strong characters in these trashy novels.
When it had chosen the host, it didn’t even consider her sexual orientation. It couldn’t have predicted that Shen Sujie would pull a stunt like this. “Dammit, I got hijacked!” the system thought, grinding its teeth.
Fu Yanzhou finally admitted defeat after half a month. In that time, his rivals had completely taken over his resources, and he was left with nothing. The rich women who had abandoned him and his useless company made him realize that if he didn’t act fast, he would be kicked out of the A-list for good. So, in this desperate situation, Fu Yanzhou grudgingly made a call to Shen Sujie.
Shen Sujie looked at the phone and smiled. She didn’t answer and blacklisted him. Fu Yanzhou quickly realized this after a few failed calls. He ground his teeth, smashed some things in his apartment, and finally calmed down. Fu Yanzhou closed his eyes and took a deep breath. “Patience is a virtue,” he thought. As long as he could get through this and find a new backer more powerful than Jiang Bieyuan, he would find a way to make them regret it.
Now that his pride was trampled, he had to be more pragmatic. Since calling Shen Sujie wasn’t an option, he started to look for people to help him track her down. When he found out she was going to a salon near his house, he immediately called Chen Wanling.
Chen Wanling answered, her voice a little impatient. “Have you come up with a new plan?”
“Yes,” Fu Yanzhou said, suppressing his rage. “Qiao Weiwei is going to a salon at this time. Go and talk to her and put in a good word for me.”
“You need to prepare the ground for me first. When you’ve talked to her enough, I’ll pretend to run into you two and come to meet you.”
*******
Chen Wanling was annoyed, but then Fu Yanzhou said smoothly, “I’ll pay for your beauty treatment today.”
“Why didn’t you say so sooner?” Chen Wanling’s expression immediately brightened. “Fine. I’ll get ready and head over.”
Seeing her attitude change so quickly, Fu Yanzhou let out a cold laugh of disdain. “Women are all the same,” he thought. “All it takes is a little reward to get them to do whatever you want.”
Gleeful about her free full-body treatment, Chen Wanling quickly got ready and rushed to the salon. She was a regular there, and the receptionists immediately greeted her with huge smiles. “Sister Wanling, it’s been so long since you last visited!” they said. “We’ve just brought in a new machine. The results are amazing…”
Shen Sujie heard the commotion outside but didn’t move. The system, after thinking for a moment, honestly warned her, “Host, Fu Yanzhou sent Chen Wanling here.”
“I know,” she said, curling her lips. “Otherwise, why would I have run into her today after never seeing her all the other times I’ve come here?”
The system exclaimed, “Wow! Host, you really can see into the future!”
Shen Sujie: “…”
Chen Wanling never forgot her goal. In a few words, she found out where Shen Sujie was. She then subtly revealed her own purpose, and the receptionist, understanding her, led her to the same resting area as Shen Sujie.
Shen Sujie heard someone approach but didn’t open her eyes. Chen Wanling, dressed in a loose disposable gown from the salon, walked in with a graceful, alluring sway, her shoulder half-exposed. “We meet again, little sister,” she said.
Shen Sujie finally opened her eyes when Chen Wanling spoke. With her beautiful features, she looked directly at the woman. “We meet again, Auntie Wanling,” she said. Her soft voice whispered in Chen Wanling’s ear, “Auntie Wanling, do you like me? Is that why you’re pretending to run into me?”
Chen Wanling looked down, a smile on her face. “Of course I like you. You’re so beautiful,” she said. “How can anyone resist liking a sweet, sensible, and smart little sister like you?”
The old fox was a smooth talker. Shen Sujie sat up, her eyes, filled with deep emotion, stared intently at Chen Wanling in the dim light. Chen Wanling didn’t avoid her gaze, staring right back at her. The two women, unwilling to back down, released their charm, each trying to bewitch the other. The system watched, its eyelids twitching. “Are they going to… you know, right here?” it thought with worry.
Thankfully, Shen Sujie gave up the game. She lifted her hand to casually brush her long, black hair away from her face. When she looked up again, her eyes were burning. “Sweet Sister,” she said. “Dump Fu Yanzhou and come to me.”
“What do you say?”
