- Chapter 25 - Becoming Love Rivals with the “Phoenix Man” Top Star (Part 25)
The old man got into a car accident and his life was in danger. All the major media outlets were reporting on the news like crazy, and the Jiang family couldn’t even manage to suppress it.
Chen Wanling was the first to arrive at the hospital, trying her hardest not to laugh out loud. She took a few deep breaths outside the hospital’s entrance to compose herself, and in an instant, her face was covered in tears of grief. She hurried to the operating room, looking as if she were about to faint. “How could this happen? How could this happen?” she sobbed. “My husband was just fine when he left the house…”
While wailing, she couldn’t help but wonder if Jiang Bieyuan or Shen Sujie was behind it. It must have been Shen Sujie, right? Chen Wanling thought that with Shen Sujie’s determination to have Jiang Bieyuan, she would never tolerate her being forced into a marriage with another man. But then again, she subconsciously thought that Shen Sujie wasn’t that impulsive. Given her personality, she had a thousand other ways to solve this problem, not by rushing in with a clumsy, impulsive plan.
If it wasn’t Shen Sujie, then was it Jiang Bieyuan? That was even more unlikely, Chen Wanling rationally thought. Hurting her father at such a crucial time would be of no benefit to her. Not Shen Sujie, not Jiang Bieyuan… Then there was only one person left.
Fu Yanzhou.
Chen Wanling lowered her eyelids, hiding all her emotions. If it was Fu Yanzhou, then it made perfect sense. Her husband was on his way to see Fu Yanzhou. He had a car accident on his way to see Fu Yanzhou. Who knew if it happened before, during, or after he met with Fu Yanzhou? Fu Yanzhou was the main suspect, and no one would believe a word he said now.
After quickly sorting out her thoughts, Chen Wanling looked at the reporters who were crowding into the hospital. She cleared her throat and a faint, almost unnoticeable smile played on her lips. From now on, her actions would be a show of loyalty to Jiang Bieyuan.
“I don’t know,” she cried. “I’m so sad and heartbroken right now. Can you please not interview me? I’m not in the mood to answer your questions.”
“He hasn’t made it out of surgery yet, and I’m so worried.”
“I really don’t know. He was perfectly fine when he left. How could something like this happen in just half an hour?” Chen Wanling’s makeup was still perfect, and her tears made her look incredibly pitiful.
When the reporters kept hounding her, Chen Wanling finally lost her temper. “I really don’t know! Stop asking me!”
“Instead of asking me, why don’t you go and investigate Fu Yanzhou? My husband was on his way to see him!”
One sentence, and the focus immediately shifted. The reporters were stunned for a moment, then asked in disbelief, “Really?”
“Of course, it’s true! Why would I lie to you?” Chen Wanling looked angry at their questioning. “All the servants at my house can back me up.”
“Go investigate Fu Yanzhou! Go ask him! He must know something.”
The woman’s emotions began to spiral, and her words became unrestrained. “Maybe he’s the one who hurt my husband and put him in this state!”
With Jiang Bieyuan and her bodyguards’ arrival, the reporters were cleared out of the hospital. The hallway became silent, except for Chen Wanling’s soft sobs.
Jiang Bieyuan looked down at her. Chen Wanling felt her gaze and looked up, her face covered in tears. As their eyes met, a secret message was quickly passed between them before they both returned to their solemn expressions.
“Father will be alright,” Jiang Bieyuan said softly.
Chen Wanling nodded, her red eyes staring at the light above the operating room door. “He will. He has always been a lucky man.”
Then Chen Wanling spoke again. “Yuan Yuan, you have to find the person who hurt your father and get revenge!”
Jiang Bieyuan blinked, quickly getting the valuable information from her words.
I’d be happy to.
“Perfect,” she said. “I’ll go handle this right away.”
“You stay here and wait for Father. Call me as soon as the surgery is over.”
Chen Wanling forced a brave smile. “Okay.”
******
In a flash, Fu Yanzhou became a potential murderer, and the news sent shockwaves across the internet. His fans refused to believe it and frantically defended him.
“No way. Brother Yanzhou would never do something like this.”
“Brother Yanzhou doesn’t even know that man. Why would he hit him with his car? This is all made up!”
“I don’t know who’s trying to ruin Fu Yanzhou, but let me tell you now: your scheme won’t work.”
“The Sailboats will protect Brother Yanzhou!”
This time, unlike the last, the public wasn’t so quick to believe the fans. The victim’s family was so certain—how could it be a lie? And if Fu Yanzhou had nothing to hide, why hadn’t he stepped forward to clarify things? From the moment the news broke until now, neither he nor his agency had said a word, which only made people more suspicious.
As the situation escalated and started to affect the company’s stock, Fu Yanzhou’s agency finally released a vague statement. “We’re sorry, we haven’t been able to get in touch with Fu Yanzhou.”
“But we will cooperate with the police in any further investigation.”
The statement was so ambiguous that it was impossible to tell whether the agency was trying to protect Fu Yanzhou. His fans were furious at the company’s attitude and flooded their official social media pages with angry messages. No matter how much they cursed, the company refused to show its face again. In a short time, rumors were everywhere, and the fans could only watch as the situation spiraled out of control.
Meanwhile, Fu Yanzhou, hiding in his vacation villa, was completely stunned. He had never imagined that Chen Wanling would betray him at such a crucial moment. He smashed everything in the house, full of regret for his lack of foresight.
He had no idea that the old man was with Chen Wanling before he left and that he had told her his destination. Fu Yanzhou thought he had done everything perfectly. He chose a spot with no surveillance and meticulously hid his tracks. After the accident, the old man would be at least half-dead. If Fu Yanzhou was lucky, he might even end up in a vegetative state or become a vegetable. Fu Yanzhou thought he had calculated everything, but then Chen Wanling appeared out of nowhere.
Not only was she fully aware of the situation, but she also used it against him. She didn’t try to use the secret to negotiate with him; she went straight to the media. Why? Because it was more profitable than negotiating with him.
If the old man became incapacitated and couldn’t speak, she would become the most senior member of the family. She would get everything Fu Yanzhou wanted. If Fu Yanzhou were in her shoes, he would have done the same and taken the opportunity to get rid of the man once and for all.
After figuring out Chen Wanling’s motives, Fu Yanzhou’s face was horribly grim. He was already a suspect, and if the police found any evidence, his life would be over. How could he become a man above all others then? He’d be nothing more than a prisoner.
Fu Yanzhou’s eyes stared maliciously at the sky outside his balcony. He wanted to go back to the scene of the accident to make sure he hadn’t left any evidence, but he was afraid of walking right into a trap.
The situation was changing by the minute, and the system was completely dumbfounded.
“Host, am I seeing this correctly?” it asked, pointing at the news on the iPad in shock. “Fu Yanzhou actually did something this outrageous and monstrous?”
Shen Sujie simply replied, “Mhm.”
“But he’s the male lead!” the system said, unable to understand. “He has the main character’s halo! He’s supposed to get everything he wants naturally, without having to do anything!”
“Why would he take such a risk?”
“Greed blinds a man,” Shen Sujie said, a hint of disdain in her voice. “He’s too obsessed with success and has too little sincerity.”
“If he had been sincere toward Jiang Bieyuan, none of this would have happened.”
“If he had loved Jiang Bieyuan but she hadn’t loved him, and he had respected her and let her go, he would have been fine and would still be a successful A-list actor.”
“But he didn’t know how to do that. He wanted more. He didn’t just want Jiang Bieyuan; he wanted the entire Jiang family fortune.”
“He wanted to take it all,” Shen Sujie said, a cruel smile on her lips. “Then neither Jiang Bieyuan nor Chen Wanling would have let him get away with it.”
“What does a man with the last name Fu have to do with the Jiang family’s business?” Shen Sujie asked the system honestly. “Have you never heard the saying, ‘The enemy of my enemy is my friend’? If Jiang Bieyuan and Chen Wanling can be rivals for money, they can also work together for money.”
After her speech, Shen Sujie made a request. “So, can you please stop giving me such awful romance novel plots? Please give me a male lead who doesn’t believe that a woman will fall all over herself to marry him just because he talks to her.”
“This plot makes me very uncomfortable.”
The system: “…” Do you think this is an appropriate time to talk about this? The male lead you despise is about to go to jail!
The system was completely overwhelmed. “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Host, tell me this: now that things have gotten to this point, what do you plan to do next?”
“What do I plan to do?” Shen Sujie asked, her eyes sparkling, as if the system was asking a stupid question. “To make sure the heroine gets everything she wants, of course.”
“Money, status, power… and me, the ‘greedy’ scumbag ex.”
The system was stunned. “But she already has you, doesn’t she?”
“She does. But from her perspective, she only has my body for now, not my heart yet,” Shen Sujie said with a brilliant smile. “So, I have to make her get my heart, too.”
The system was speechless. Giving your heart to Jiang Bieyuan would be easy for you. Why are you making such a big deal out of it? The system felt a little uneasy. It had a feeling that Shen Sujie was planning something big. But it couldn’t be sure, so it had to wait patiently.
The old man’s surgery was over quickly. His condition was not optimistic. He was still in the ICU and showed no signs of waking up. The doctor had already prepared Chen Wanling. If he was lucky, he would be paralyzed and could only talk occasionally. If he was unlucky, he would be a vegetable, or he might never wake up.
After listening to the doctor, Chen Wanling couldn’t help but wipe away another tear, looking as if her world had fallen apart. The doctor patted her shoulder sympathetically. “You should make some arrangements.”
Hearing that, Chen Wanling gathered her strength and, with a grateful look, saw the doctor out of the room. She dug her nails into her palm to keep her expression from cracking. She took a few deep breaths, then, with teary eyes, picked up her phone. She wanted to call Shen Sujie, but she was afraid of being investigated by the police, so she called Jiang Bieyuan instead. “Your father’s surgery is over. He hasn’t woken up yet.”
“I’ll watch over him for now. You should go take care of the company.”
Jiang Bieyuan didn’t refuse. “Thank you for your help.”
Because of her father’s sudden accident, some people within the company were getting restless. Jiang Bieyuan needed to focus all her energy on dealing with them. She and Chen Wanling had always been at odds, but Chen Wanling’s sudden gesture of goodwill was a little strange. Still, she accepted her offer. Compared to everyone else, Chen Wanling was the only one who was on the same side as her, as their ultimate goal was to protect the Jiang family’s fortune. With Chen Wanling’s help, Jiang Bieyuan’s stress was greatly reduced.
While Jiang Bieyuan and the company’s shareholders were going at it, the old man, who had been in the ICU for half a month, passed away without any warning one afternoon. This was big news, and Jiang Bieyuan didn’t try to hide it. She publicly announced her father’s death and took the opportunity to get out of her engagement. The reason was simple: a daughter must mourn her father for three years, so she was not in the mood to marry. Also, she had a beloved person in her heart whom she could not forget. Although it was a shame, she had decided to spend the rest of her life with her loved one and hoped they would understand.
Her words were sincere and reasonable, and even the family she was supposed to marry into had nothing more to say. They wouldn’t be able to marry, but they could still do business together. They had only wanted the marriage for profit, anyway. So, with both sides in agreement, the engagement was called off.
The moment she knew the other family had given up on the marriage, Jiang Bieyuan rushed home and hugged Shen Sujie. “I did it, Weiwei,” she said. “They’ve agreed to cancel the engagement.” Jiang Bieyuan rested her forehead on Shen Sujie’s face, a little too hard, like a frantic dog. “I’m all yours now.”
“You’re not allowed to abandon me again.”
“You have to keep your promise.”
The woman’s voice was full of hurt. After failing to push her away, Shen Sujie finally gave up and let Jiang Bieyuan hold her. “I will,” she said resignedly. “When have I not kept my promise?”
“Lots of times,” Jiang Bieyuan said, looking at her with a belly full of grievances.
Shen Sujie felt a little bad, so she gave Jiang Bieyuan a rare kiss. Her voice was very gentle. “It won’t happen again.”
Jiang Bieyuan was easy to please. With just a few words, she became happy again, as if she were the same simple girl from before. She was so happy she kissed Shen Sujie again and again until it was about to go too far. She then stopped and pleaded, “Will you come to my father’s funeral with me in a few days?”
“As my girlfriend.”
She couldn’t wait to make their relationship public. She wanted to tie Shen Sujie to her completely, so that she wouldn’t wake up one day and find out that this was all just a beautiful dream. Only by making their relationship public, only by having Shen Sujie nod in front of everyone, could Jiang Bieyuan feel a sense of security. The woman’s voice was timid and pleading. Shen Sujie looked at her for a few seconds and then agreed. “Okay.”
In that moment, Jiang Bieyuan’s face lit up with an impossibly beautiful smile. The system watched, mesmerized. It had never seen Jiang Bieyuan look so radiant, so alive. She was no longer the pitiful, misunderstood, and sullen heroine from before.
At this point, the system had to admit that Shen Sujie’s methods were indeed correct. Without the contemptuous attitude and emotional manipulation of a man, Jiang Bieyuan had blossomed like a flower in spring. She was vibrant, delicate, and beautiful. But even at this moment, the system made one last effort to justify the original plot. “Maybe… this is just Fu Yanzhou’s problem. If the male lead of this story had been a normal person, Jiang Bieyuan could have been just as happy.”
Of course, that was just a wild guess, because even if the male lead had been a normal person, whether he could win Jiang Bieyuan over would still depend on the host’s mood, wouldn’t it? Thinking about that, the system ground its teeth. “Why can’t you just do your job and stop seducing the heroine?”
After that exasperated thought, the system felt a familiar sense of disappointment. It refused to accept this. It believed that in another world, its host wouldn’t be able to get away with this again.
Jiang Bieyuan, having finally found a sense of security from Shen Sujie, went to sleep early. They didn’t do anything intimate; they just held each other, and the atmosphere was warm and peaceful. She was probably exhausted, as she fell asleep quickly, her breathing becoming even almost immediately.
Shen Sujie couldn’t help but gently trace the delicate, beautiful features of the woman’s face. The more she looked, the more beautiful she found her. But Jiang Bieyuan must have found her small movements annoying, as she suddenly pulled Shen Sujie into her arms, pinning half of her body underneath her and making her unable to move. Shen Sujie instinctively wiggled around, and just as Jiang Bieyuan’s patience was about to run out, she found a comfortable position and went to sleep.
*******
The next day, Jiang Bieyuan took Shen Sujie directly to her father’s funeral. Everyone in the Jiang family except for Chen Wanling gave Shen Sujie unfriendly looks, but with one glance from Jiang Bieyuan, they immediately backed off. They had all learned in the past few days that Jiang Bieyuan was a “mad dog.” Even though they were furious and wanted to do something to stop her, they could only think about it because of her ruthlessness. And now that Chen Wanling was in her good graces and the two women were in the same camp, it was even more of a headache for them.
Jiang Bieyuan was not someone to be trifled with, and neither was Chen Wanling. And now, Jiang Bieyuan’s ex-girlfriend seemed to be no better. With three of them working together, they were just waiting for them to make a mistake so they could pounce. After a lot of thought, the Jiang family was a rare sight of peace and quiet. Everyone minded their own business, not daring to say a word about Shen Sujie, the outsider who had appeared out of nowhere.
In front of everyone, Shen Sujie’s expression was calm, but in private, she would sneak glances at Jiang Bieyuan, her eyes full of admiration. “You’re so amazing, Yuan Yuan!”
Jiang Bieyuan’s mood immediately lifted. “Oh? Why do you say that?”
“They’re all so well-behaved now,” Shen Sujie said, pointing at the Jiang family members. “It must be because you’re so incredible that they’re all so docile and obedient.”
“I remember that one used to be so arrogant in front of you,” Shen Sujie said, pointing at another person. “But now he’s as obedient as a rabbit.”
Shen Sujie’s voice was just loud enough for the man to hear. He trembled and quickly said, “It was my fault. I was arrogant, and I sincerely apologize. I hope you’ll forgive me, Yuan Yuan.”
No way. Jiang Bieyuan was just waiting for someone to mess up so she could make an example of them. He didn’t want to be that person. Because of his attitude, the tense atmosphere immediately dissipated. The others gave him a look that said, “Coward. Useless.” He ignored them all. “If you’re so brave, you can go and confront her yourself,” he thought. “Otherwise, shut up and act like a little boy, just like me.” He knew the difference between a one-time meal and a full belly for life. As long as he had money and could continue living a life of luxury, who cared if he was a little bit of a pushover?
Jiang Bieyuan glanced at the man’s fearful face, then didn’t pay him any more attention. She was in a great mood, holding Shen Sujie’s hand, her eyes sparkling. “You really think I’m amazing?”
“Mhm,” Shen Sujie said, nodding like a woodpecker, her eyes still filled with admiration. “You’re the most amazing person I’ve ever met.”
Jiang Bieyuan didn’t care about the flattery. She was so captivated by Shen Sujie’s admiring expression that she wanted to give her her heart. Jiang Bieyuan’s lips curled up in an obvious smile, even though she was trying to suppress it. “If you stick with me, I’ll show you things that are even more incredible.”
“Okay,” Shen Sujie said, her long eyelashes fluttering as she smiled.
The girl was so beautiful that Jiang Bieyuan couldn’t resist. She leaned in and kissed her. “After my father’s funeral is over, let’s go abroad and get our papers.”
“And after the three-year mourning period, I’ll give you a wedding of the century.”
Shen Sujie froze. Her face became hesitant. The girl didn’t agree immediately. Instead, she looked sad. The happiness that Jiang Bieyuan felt from Shen Sujie’s flattery was instantly gone. The woman’s face was as cold as ice. “You don’t want to?” she asked, her voice rigid. The pressure around her plummeted. “Why not? Is there someone you can’t forget?”
“Is it Fu Yanzhou? Or someone else?”
