A flush of green and red spread across Fu Yanzhou’s face.
He stared in disbelief at Jiang Beiyuan’s tall, retreating figure, his knuckles turning white as he clenched his fists, almost to the point of breaking.
The veins on the back of his hands were starkly visible. It was a long moment before Fu Yanzhou snapped back to reality, his eyes dark. She had actually, and in public no less, told him to get lost without a shred of mercy?
Why? What had he done to anger her?
Was it because he had bothered her for too long? Or was it because he’d been so careless as to repeatedly mention Qiao Weiwei in front of her?
It had to be the latter, Fu Yanzhou thought, his face was pale.
He must have been too pleased with himself, losing his sense of propriety, and that’s why he’d enraged Jiang Beiyuan to the point that she wouldn’t even pretend to be civil.
Things were spiraling out of his control, he thought, his expression grim. Having angered Jiang Beiyuan today, he had no idea what it would cost to win her back. Recently, she had been aloof and haughty, ignoring his attempts to win her over.
Fu Yanzhou reflected for a couple of seconds, regretting his actions for a brief moment, before returning to his usual self. It was fine. Qiao Weiwei was still around. He would just let her handle the task of getting Jiang Beiyuan to forgive him.
It was a small problem.
But where was Qiao Weiwei?
Fu Yanzhou scowled, scanning the room, but couldn’t find her.
A surge of rage rose in his chest, and his fingers drummed a dark rhythm on the table. Qiao Weiwei’s work hadn’t made any progress. When he found her, he would have to teach her a lesson.
He hadn’t hired her to relax.
Qiao Weiwei’s only purpose was to help him win over Jiang Beiyuan. If she couldn’t even do that, there was no point in keeping her around.
Meanwhile, Shen Sujie, who was being thought about by both the male and female lead, was in a room in a five-star hotel.
After a playboy had coaxed and deceived her into coming with him, Shen Sujie knocked him unconscious. She breathed a sigh of relief and stretched a few times before finding a fire hose to tie him up with and stuffing him into a nearby closet.
She felt a bit dizzy and decided to take a nap before dealing with the rest.
Splayed out on the bed, her heart felt sour once more. “I wonder how Fu Yanzhou and Jiang Beiyuan’s conversation went.”
“I’m sure it was fine,” the system said. “Fu Yanzhou is a male heartthrob. He’s tall, handsome, and has a pair of intoxicating, soulful eyes. A single look from him, and women easily fall for his roguish charm.”
“Haven’t you seen his interviews and TV shows? From sixty- and seventy-year-olds to thirteen- and fourteen-year-old girls, they’re all head over heels for him.”
“Male heartthrob?” Shen Sujie scoffed. “More like a male seducer.”
“One look at his face, and I can tell he’s not the type to settle down…” She wanted to say more, but then seemed to think better of it and merely pursed her lips, staying silent.
The system found her a little strange, just like the feeling she had given it before.
But it couldn’t figure out why, so it just said, “Host, don’t overthink it. Your simple mission is just to get them to live happily ever after, that’s all.”
“And don’t think for a second that Sister Yuan is a delicate little flower. She has plenty of ways to discipline and control Fu Yanzhou.”
“Perfect,” Shen Sujie said, raising an eyebrow. “Then you can just have Jiang Beiyuan train Fu Yanzhou herself. It’ll save me from having to act like a personal cupid, helping them both pretend to like each other.”
“It’s not the same. You, the scumbag ex-girlfriend, are the catalyst for their relationship, a human fertilizer. Without you, can their little sapling of love grow strong?”
Shen Sujie’s mouth twisted in a grimace.
She struggled to relax and said, “Fine, fine. I’ll do what you say.”
The system nodded in satisfaction. “Host, don’t worry. Once the mission is complete, your reward will be huge.”
Shen Sujie kept her mouth shut, but inside, she was annoyed. Thinking of Fu Yanzhou’s hypocritical face made her so angry she could barely breathe.
She really hoped Jiang Beiyuan would see the light, realize what a scumbag Fu Yanzhou was, and shine on her own.
The emotional weight of her obsession was so heavy that even in her sleep, Shen Sujie dreamed of Jiang Beiyuan, who heartlessly abandoned Fu Yanzhou at the banquet to come looking for her.
Looking for her?
Wait!
Shen Sujie woke up with a start, her eyes wide with a ghostly expression as she stared at Jiang Beiyuan, who was standing silently beside the bed. She stammered, “When did you get here?”
The shock made her use a formal, respectful term for Jiang Beiyuan without even realizing it.
“Where is he?” Jiang Beiyuan asked, ignoring her question.
Shen Sujie looked confused. “Who?”
“Zhang Zhou.”
Shen Sujie didn’t know who Zhang Zhou was, but in the moment their eyes met, a spark of inspiration flashed in her mind. She pointed to the closet, as if divinely guided. “Are you talking about him?”
The intense emotion in Jiang Beiyuan’s eyes flickered. She reflexively turned and pulled open the closet door.
When she saw the playboy, tied up and looking like a trussed-up dumpling, Jiang Beiyuan almost laughed.
She was so impressed she wanted to compliment Shen Sujie. “Nice work.”
But the faint smile on Jiang Beiyuan’s face quickly faded. She turned back to Shen Sujie, looking down at her. “Why didn’t you tell me when he came to bother you…”
Her scolding words stopped when she saw the subtle glimmer in Shen Sujie’s eyes.
Under the chandelier, the girl looked anxious, her eyelashes fluttering nervously. She had been carefully watching Jiang Beiyuan, but after hearing the question, her eyes immediately reddened as she lowered her head, not wanting her embarrassment to be seen.
Jiang Beiyuan pressed her tongue against her upper palate and closed her eyes, mentally telling herself: Qiao Weiwei must be feeling helpless and miserable after something like this. Scolding her now would only be rubbing salt in the wound. I should comfort her gently.
But she couldn’t. Even though her mind told her what to do, facing that person, that face, her throat felt as if it were clogged with cement and she couldn’t make a sound.
Jiang Beiyuan’s expression was grim. Shen Sujie nervously picked at her fingernails, then slowly looked up. “Are you worried about me?”
“I’m sorry, it won’t happen again,” she said with a genuine tone. “I was planning to deal with him after he woke up…”
“Deal with him? How? By making him disappear and then chopping him into pieces?” Jiang Beiyuan’s voice was cold. “He’s the only son of Director Zhang. If you’ve offended him today, you can forget about a future in City A.”
Shen Sujie pretended to scared. She quickly got up in a panicked flurry and went over to hold Jiang Beiyuan’s arm. “What should I do? Please, Yuanyuan, help me.”
She looked up at Jiang Beiyuan with a pitiful expression, her soft, delicate body brushing against Jiang Beiyuan’s skin.
Jiang Beiyuan instinctively pulled her hand back, her gaze briefly sweeping over Shen Sujie before returning. “Now you’re scared. What were you thinking before?”
“Before, I just…” Shen Sujie’s eyes immediately filled with tears. “I know you were tired of me and didn’t want to see me, so I didn’t dare come to you. But at that moment, besides you, I didn’t know anyone else I could rely on for help.”
Qiao Weiwei’s body was slender and pale. With her eyes a little red, she looked heartbreakingly fragile, like a pear blossom bathed in rain. Even other women would feel a protective urge.
Jiang Beiyuan knew all too well how effective this trick was. A slight twitch of her nose, a squeeze of her eyes, a couple of fake tears—it was enough to make anyone surrender.
Jiang Beiyuan’s heart was calm and unmoved by these old tricks, but when she heard the second half of her sentence, she fell silent. In the end, she relented. “If something happens again, you can come to me directly.”
“Really?” Before the words were even out, her bright eyes lit up. “You’re not mad at me anymore?”
As soon as she asked, Shen Sujie seemed to realize something. The light in her eyes faded. She lowered her lashes again, her voice feigning calm. “Thank you.”
“But something like this won’t happen again. If I ever attend events with Mr. Fu in the future, I’ll stick to him like glue.” Her nose was slightly red, and her soft voice was a little hoarse with feigned sadness.
“Wait!” Suddenly, Shen Sujie looked flustered. “Where is Mr. Fu?”
“He’s definitely going to be angry that I left without a word. I have to go back and find him.” With that, she tried to jump off the bed, but Jiang Beiyuan’s hand gently held her in place.
The woman leaned in close, her long, dark hair brushing against Shen Sujie’s fair cheek.
Jiang Beiyuan’s aura was strong and sharp. She stared intently at Shen Sujie with her deep, long eyes, her red lips parting to ask a chilling question: “You’re very concerned about him?”
