Fu Yanzhou’s decisions were spontaneous and he was always firm in his resolve.
Shen Sujie and her system debated the matter for a while before she decided to use their public funds to buy a gift for Jiang Bieyuan. She would then personally go over and extend the invitation on Fu Yanzhou’s behalf.
True to her word, Shen Sujie immediately headed to the mall. After a good look around, she found herself stopping in front of a nightwear store. The new autumn collection was on display under bright spotlights. The colors were beautiful and the silk was so smooth. Shen Sujie ran her hands over the fabric, not wanting to let go. “How about we get this one?” she said.
“Jiang Bieyuan probably has plenty of pajamas, and she might not even wear the ones I pick out for her, but a gift is a gift, right? It’s all about spending a lot of money on something that looks pretty but isn’t really useful.”
The system was speechless. That’s a very expensive “pretty but not useful” item. It stared at the price tag. “Twenty thousand yuan? How could you? Do you really think Fu Yanzhou is a total pushover?”
“No, no, no,” Shen Sujie shook her head vigorously. “I didn’t think that at all. I just figure that if you want to court a girl, you have to be willing to spend some money.”
“If I can successfully get Jiang Bieyuan to accept Fu Yanzhou’s invitation today, is he really going to quibble over a measly twenty thousand?”
The system replied with a cold tone. “What if you fail?”
“Isn’t that the norm?” Shen Sujie blinked in surprise. “Fu Yanzhou has already spent money on five bags, so I’m sure he won’t get hung up on a little extra cash.”
“Jiang Bieyuan isn’t easy to win over; he should have been prepared for this.” Qiao Weiwei had pursued Jiang Bieyuan for over a year. Fu Yanzhou thought he could win her over in two or three months? A pipe dream.
Since Shen Sujie’s logic made some sense, the system didn’t object anymore and instead enthusiastically helped her pick out the styles. Not knowing Jiang Bieyuan’s preferences, Shen Sujie chose a men’s set in addition to the one she liked. After a quick guess at Jiang Bieyuan’s height, she chose a size, paid, and left.
With the gift selected, Shen Sujie contacted Jiang Bieyuan. “Yuan Yuan, are you busy right now? Fu Yanzhou has something he wants me to tell you.”
Jiang Bieyuan listened to the clear voice on the other end of the line, then glanced at his schedule. “I’m at the company,” he replied.
“There’s a chance!” Shen Sujie’s eyes lit up. She did her best to hold back a smile as she said brightly, “I’ll be right over!”
“I’m so lucky today. I can’t believe Jiang Bieyuan has time,” she said happily.
The system, having watched Jiang Bieyuan immediately call her secretary to clear her entire morning schedule, fell into a deep contemplation. Lucky? it wondered. It felt more like Jiang Bieyuan was deliberately making time to meet the host. Is the ‘human fertilizer’ approach actually working? The system felt a jolt of excitement. Jiang Bieyuan specifically asked the host to come over. Is she ready to take things a step further with Fu Yanzhou?
Thank goodness! The progress bar is finally moving! The system clenched its fingers into a tiny fist and put its hands together, absolutely thrilled.
Jiang Bieyuan’s company was located in Science Valley, a forty-minute taxi ride away. When Shen Sujie got out of the car, she was carrying so many bags she looked like a poor relative coming to seek help from a successful older sister. Embarrassed by her own imagination, she quietly reminded herself that at least she was beautiful enough to get away with it. Otherwise, Jiang Bieyuan would never have tolerated her bothering her for so long.
Calming herself down, Shen Sujie entered the company and explained her purpose to the front desk. The receptionist made a quick call, then told Shen Sujie which floor to go to. “You can take the elevator on this side.”
“Thank you,” Shen Sujie said, turning to go. She had no idea the receptionist was directing her to Jiang Bieyuan’s private elevator.
After she left, the receptionist immediately took out her phone and started gossiping with a coworker. “A girl just came to see CEO Jiang, and Sister Zhang told me to send her up in the CEO’s private elevator.”
“She’s that ex-girlfriend of CEO Jiang’s, right?” To prove her point, the receptionist secretly snapped a picture of Shen Sujie’s back. “Look, help me see if I’m wrong.”
Gossip spread fast in the company, but the two main people involved couldn’t have cared less.
The elevator “dinged” and the doors opened. Shen Sujie peeked her head out and saw what appeared to be only Jiang Bieyuan’s office.
Jiang Bieyuan was working, but when she heard the noise, she immediately looked up and caught sight of the sneaky Shen Sujie. Caught in the act, Shen Sujie dropped the act. She straightened her back and walked over quickly with the gifts.
“Sorry to interrupt your work,” she said. “These are gifts Fu Yanzhou asked me to give to you.” Placing the bags on the desk, Shen Sujie went straight to the point. “Fu Yanzhou has admired you for a long time, so he asked me to invite you to dinner tomorrow.”
After relaying the message, Shen Sujie pressed her lips together and instinctively held her breath. Please don’t agree so fast! she screamed internally. Fu Yanzhou is clearly using her to shield himself from the public eye. If Jiang Bieyuan stupidly agrees, it’ll ruin her own reputation.
Shen Sujie’s expression was tense. She thought to herself that this awful job was becoming unbearable. She was doing so many heartless, monstrous things by pushing the heroine into a fire pit. She was afraid of karma.
While Shen Sujie was lost in her thoughts, Jiang Bieyuan’s gaze shifted from her and fell lightly on the bags. She casually pulled a bag closer to inspect it. She looked up, her eyes quiet as she watched Shen Sujie, but with a strange, alluring charm. “Is this a gift from Fu Yanzhou, or a gift from you?”
Jiang Bieyuan’s sudden, odd question made Shen Sujie hesitate. She answered, bewildered, “I picked out the gifts, but Fu Yanzhou paid for them.” She was confused. Hadn’t Jiang Bieyuan known this the whole time? And hadn’t she been the one who’d sent her to Fu Yanzhou in the first place, giving her this job of using his money to curry favor with his ex-girlfriend?
“You picked them out,” Jiang Bieyuan said, nodding once, then said nothing more.
Shen Sujie didn’t know what to make of her response. The two stood in silent deadlock. The atmosphere was suddenly so stifling that Shen Sujie’s attention began to wander. She found herself staring at Jiang Bieyuan’s hands.
They were a perfect balance of bone and flesh, with defined knuckles and delicate, fair skin. They looked beautiful wrapped around a pen. Jiang Bieyuan’s nails were trimmed and clean, their rosy color and shiny half-moons a sign of good health.
So beautiful, Shen Sujie thought, almost drooling. Her eyes were especially drawn to Jiang Bieyuan’s hands resting on the pure black wooden desktop, making her skin appear as translucent and white as jade.
Just as Shen Sujie was staring, Jiang Bieyuan must have felt her gaze and quickly retracted her hands, hiding them under the desk.
“Not bad,” Jiang Bieyuan said approvingly.
“So you’ll agree to go to dinner with Fu Yanzhou tomorrow?” Shen Sujie asked, her voice filled with a desperate eagerness.
Jiang Bieyuan’s face remained impassive. She shot back, “When did I agree?”
Shen Sujie instinctively pointed at the bags. “Just now, you said the gift was not bad.”
“But you’re the one who picked it out,” Jiang Bieyuan said, tilting her head. Her deep-set eyes settled on Shen Sujie’s stunned expression. “What does that have to do with Fu Yanzhou?”
“If you’re the one who wants to invite me to dinner, I’ll agree.”
So… Fu Yanzhou can’t?
Shen Sujie was at a loss for words. She stared at the woman’s lazy, composed demeanor. Suddenly, on a whim, she blurted out, “What if I invite you to dinner, and just happen to bring Fu Yanzhou along?”
What if?
Jiang Bieyuan’s look was all the answer she needed. The woman seemed to be almost amused by her suggestion. She sat up, slowly rising to her feet, and looked down at Shen Sujie with a powerful, almost aggressive presence. “Why do you have to bring Fu Yanzhou along?”
“Well…” Shen Sujie stammered. “Because he asked me to?”
“He’s my boss, after all.” Finding a good excuse, Shen Sujie’s words began to flow more smoothly. “It’s my duty to consider his needs.”
After she spoke, a long silence hung in the air.
Shen Sujie nervously twiddled her fingers, and Jiang Bieyuan’s eyes stayed on her face for so long that Shen Sujie could feel the muscles at the corner of her lips twitching uncomfortably.
With a soft blink of her long eyelashes, Jiang Bieyuan finally broke the silence. “Come here.”
Shen Sujie felt like Jiang Bieyuan was about to hit her, but she had no choice but to steel herself and step forward.
When she reached the edge of the desk, Jiang Bieyuan seemed to find her too slow. She raised her hand, cupped the back of Shen Sujie’s head, and pulled her face close.
A beautiful, perfect face suddenly filled Shen Sujie’s vision, and her heart stopped.
But before she could even process why Jiang Bieyuan would act so out of character, she felt something warm and soft press gently against her lips.
Shen Sujie’s mind went completely blank. Her whole system crashed. “Wait, what?!”
