In fact, the moment her lips touched Shen Sujie’s, Jiang Bieyuan had a moment of clarity. She felt as if she had been somehow bewitched by Shen Sujie, leading her to such an uncharacteristic and forward action. A moment ago, Shen Sujie had looked so utterly wronged and pitiful, with big, clear eyes that were soft and misty, like an easily coaxed little deer. Faced with such a non-threatening creature, Jiang Bieyuan had let her guard down for a moment and couldn’t resist.
When she came back to her senses, Jiang Bieyuan quickly let go of Shen Sujie and retracted her hand, pretending as if nothing had happened. On the surface, she was calm and composed, with no sign of inner panic. She lowered her head and glanced at Shen Sujie, who still hadn’t recovered. The other woman looked completely stunned, as if she’d been struck by lightning. Her eyes were glazed over, and her pupils trembled, clearly terrified by the sudden act.
What the hell was my Sister Yuan doing?! Shen Sujie asked her system in shock.
Although the system had been frozen solid the moment it saw Jiang Bieyuan actively kiss Shen Sujie, it quickly adjusted its wildly fluctuating emotions and answered with a feigned calmness. “What do you mean ‘what?’ My Sister Yuan just kissed you. What’s the big deal? It’s perfectly normal for girls to give each other a little peck on the lips or hold hands. Host, you haven’t been living under a rock, have you? No wonder you’re so shocked.” The system seemed to have an epiphany.
Shen Sujie was confused by the system’s unprovoked disdain. “Do you really think this is normal?” she asked hesitantly.
“Isn’t it?” The system pretended to be unbothered. “Host, you need to get out more!”
Shen Sujie was left speechless, and her mind began to wander in a daze. Is this really a normal thing? Am I just an ignorant country bumpkin? Filled with doubt, she looked up at Jiang Bieyuan, who was expressionless—still the same noble, cold, distant ice queen whom one wouldn’t dare approach. Shen Sujie felt lost and bewildered, her worldview completely shattered.
“Host, stop thinking about all that nonsense. You should be happy right now,” the system advised earnestly. “This proves that you picked a great gift today, and that you’ve successfully closed the gap between you and Jiang Bieyuan. Keep it up! I think in two or three months, you’ll be calling each other sisters. And once you’re inseparable best friends, how far away could you be from successfully matching Jiang Bieyuan and Fu Yanzhou and completing the mission?” The system gave Shen Sujie a deadpan stare. “Don’t you want to get your reward as soon as possible?”
“I do, but…” Shen Sujie began. She still felt like something was off.
“No buts. Now, you need to propose that Jiang Bieyuan meet with Fu Yanzhou. She’ll agree.”
Shen Sujie hesitated but ultimately decided to listen to the system. She cleared her throat, swallowed the heat on her cheeks, and quickly glanced at Jiang Bieyuan before looking away. “So, about what Fu Yanzhou asked me to do…”
“Tell him ‘in a few days,'” Jiang Bieyuan said. “I’ve been busy lately.” Of course, Jiang Bieyuan wasn’t foolish enough to become Fu Yanzhou’s shield. Besides, she really was busy. Had it not been for feeling like she owed Shen Sujie and wanting her to stay with Fu Yanzhou to keep tabs on him, Jiang Bieyuan would’ve had nothing to do with him. Fu Yanzhou was a calculating “phoenix man” who would take everything from you if you weren’t careful. Jiang Bieyuan was a mere illegitimate daughter, not an idiot. She wasn’t noble enough to sacrifice her entire life just to save some pitiful man.
Just as the system had predicted, Jiang Bieyuan agreed. Shen Sujie breathed a sigh of relief and immediately pulled out her phone to report her work results to Fu Yanzhou. She chose to text him now to ease the atmosphere and escape the aftermath of what had just happened.
However, Jiang Bieyuan was staring at her, her eyes flickering before being covered by an unreadable, deep emotion.
Shen Sujie didn’t notice. After receiving Fu Yanzhou’s confirmation, she relaxed and smiled. Her fair skin, flawless like a white jade petal, gleamed in the natural light.
“I won’t bother you any longer,” Shen Sujie said cautiously, her phone in hand. “See you another time?”
Jiang Bieyuan paused for a moment, then nodded. “Okay.”
At her reply, Shen Sujie felt as if she’d been pardoned. She quickly turned and headed for the elevator, afraid that if she hesitated, Jiang Bieyuan would call her back.
The system watched her, looking as though she wanted to put the fear of God into a train and ride it out of there. It scoffed. “Host, can you be a little more impressive? Jiang Bieyuan doesn’t eat people.”
“She doesn’t eat people, that’s true,” Shen Sujie said, completely serious. “But she’ll kiss people for no reason. She kissed me today, sleep with me tomorrow, and then kill me the day after to cover her tracks. She’s terrifying!”
The system was speechless at her logic and didn’t respond for a long time. Shen Sujie didn’t mind. When the elevator arrived, she scurried out of Science Valley as if her backside were on fire.
After she left, Jiang Bieyuan sat on the sofa in silence for a long time. She drank coffee, cup after empty cup. Suddenly, she sat up straight, picked up her phone, and messaged a friend. “Do you think a person’s personality can change drastically for no reason?”
Her friend, confused, sent a string of question marks. “What?”
Seeing that her friend didn’t understand, Jiang Bieyuan pursed her lips and gave up. She was about to put her phone away when her friend suddenly seemed to get it and started a message bombardment. “Jiang Bieyuan, don’t tell me you’re talking about Qiao Weiwei. You want to get back together with her? Oh my god, no way! Jiang Bieyuan, if you dare to get back together with her, I’ll jump off the thirty-third floor right now! You’ll be attending my funeral!”
“Our friendship…”
Annoyed by the noise, Jiang Bieyuan exited the chat and set her friend’s messages to mute. She was just curious. The Qiao Weiwei now was very different from the one she had known. She had the same familiar face, but the current version of the girl was like a completely reformed and renovated Qiao Weiwei: innocent, principled, and likable.
Jiang Bieyuan’s eyes showed a hint of confusion. She couldn’t help but wonder: Was this a genuine change of heart, or was the girl simply still putting on an act?
*******
Shen Sujie went directly to Fu Yanzhou’s place in a taxi.
This time, Fu Yanzhou’s expression was much better; in fact, he was positively pleasant. “Did Yuan Yuan really agree to see me?”
“She really did,” Shen Sujie confirmed with a firm nod. “She’s just very busy these days, so she’ll have to get back to you in a few days. She said she’ll contact me when she has time.”
“Good, good,” Fu Yanzhou finally sighed in relief. “It’s good that she agreed.”
Seeing Fu Yanzhou’s relaxed demeanor, Shen Sujie remembered her system’s advice. She took the opportunity to subtly give him a little reality check, hoping to make him change his ways. “What about the gifts for the next few days? Do you want to pick them out yourself, Mr. Fu? That way you’ll have more to talk about with Miss Jiang when you finally have dinner with her…”
Before Shen Sujie could finish, Fu Yanzhou frowned and shot her an impatient glance. “You keep picking them out. I’m busy dealing with this negative news. I don’t have time. Also, you’re going to work overtime after you get off work. Export all the chat records you’ve had with her over the past few days and organize them for me.”
Shen Sujie instinctively asked, “But didn’t I give you a report every day?”
“Oh, I was too busy. There were too many messages, so I didn’t get around to reading them. I’m too lazy to go through it all, so just make me a new summary.” With that, Fu Yanzhou looked her up and down, his eyes filled with scrutiny. “Got a problem with that?”
Shen Sujie’s fists clenched. “No,” she answered obediently. Fu Yanzhou seemed satisfied and left in a hurry.
As a top celebrity, Fu Yanzhou was surrounded by people eager to take him down. When the scandal broke, his rivals spared no expense to push the news to the top of the trending topics. Fu Yanzhou’s money couldn’t even get the hashtag removed. He was furious and cursed out almost everyone on his team except his manager. Everyone else was too scared to say anything, worried they’d lose their jobs.
Fu Yanzhou probably understood that someone was deliberately trying to get him, so when the hashtag couldn’t be removed, he immediately sought comfort from a rich mistress.
*******
Three days later, after he had thoroughly pleased the mistress, the negative news online vanished in a flash. Even his jilted ex-girlfriend came forward and issued a statement, saying that she and Fu Yanzhou had broken up amicably and not in the way the internet had claimed. Some people believed it, and some didn’t, but that didn’t affect Fu Yanzhou. His resources quickly returned, and he even got more and better opportunities than before, making him a formidable force in the industry.
Shen Sujie watched in awe. “As expected of the male lead. The protagonist’s halo is invincible.”
“My Sister Yuan isn’t bad either,” the system said. “In the past few days, she signed a multi-billion dollar deal and successfully became one of the most promising young female CEOs in the business world. Host, if you don’t speed things up, the mission’s difficulty will double. You know, with a beautiful and single girl like my Sister Yuan, everyone wants to get their hands on her, from seventy-year-old men on social security to seventeen-year-old boys.”
Shen Sujie’s expression was a mix of frustration and disgust. “I want to speed things up, but isn’t your male lead a lost cause? Getting him to pick out a gift for Jiang Bieyuan is like asking him to die.” She felt so annoyed. “So, can you just kick this rotten cucumber to the curb and find a good husband for my Sister Yuan?”
The system replied, “I can’t do that. The plot for ‘The Cold Female CEO and Her Iceberg Husband’ is just what it is.”
“So you’re just going to give up and settle for less?” Shen Sujie’s lips were pursed in frustration. “You’re not helping Jiang Bieyuan; you’re hurting her. You want me to help Fu Yanzhou win over Jiang Bieyuan, and then help him confine her to a domestic life, making her revolve her days around family chores and children… I can’t do that. I won’t do that.”
Shen Sujie felt a strange frustration. “I can’t stand by and watch Jiang Bieyuan fall into a wolf’s den because of my actions. That would be helping a tyrant do evil.”
The system was silent for a long moment before asking, “So, what do you want to do, Host?”
What do I want to do? Shen Sujie’s frustration suddenly turned to confusion. What should she do? Even though she didn’t have a plan yet, she was certain about one thing: she couldn’t help Fu Yanzhou anymore.
She thought for a moment. “I’ll start by…”
Buzz. Her phone vibrated. Shen Sujie’s voice was cut off, and she instinctively looked down. After using her face to unlock the screen, she stared at Jiang Bieyuan’s message: “Got time? Come to my place tonight.” Her eyes widened in horror.
“What does your Sister Yuan mean?”
“Why would she invite me to her place at night, a time that’s so ambiguous and sensitive?”
“She’s not going to do something awful to me, is she? That won’t do. I’m a professional book transmigrator with professional ethics.”
The system had also been nervous and panicked by Jiang Bieyuan’s bizarre behavior, but after hearing Shen Sujie’s three rapid-fire questions, it was speechless.
“What are you thinking?” the system finally exploded. “Is my Sister Yuan that kind of person?!”
“Yes,” Shen Sujie said, staring at it blankly. “She secretly kissed me last time.”
The system’s anger was instantly extinguished. It stared at Shen Sujie for a long time, then it, too, became unsure. “…I don’t think so,” it said weakly. “I think the last time was just an accident. Maybe she just thought you were so cute that… she couldn’t help herself.” The system’s voice lacked any real conviction.
Shen Sujie looked at it incredulously. “Are you even listening to yourself? Is that a normal thing to say?”
