- Chapter 19 - The System - Feng Jin, a True Soulmate
Seeing Bo Xuenong not only agree but also beam with delight, Fu Yunqing knew she couldn’t stop Shen Yanting and her companions.
Her master had long warned her that Shen Yanting wouldn’t remain at the Imperial Tranquility Sect forever. Fu Yunqing had taken this to heart at the time, but over five centuries, Shen Yanting had never mentioned leaving, causing her to forget the matter entirely. The suddenness of this departure caught her off guard. Knowing how much Shen Yanting had helped the sect, she naturally wouldn’t blame her like Cui Huaizhou did. Instead, she would simply miss Shen Yanting dearly, and Bo Xuenong even more.
Fu Yunqing sighed repeatedly, glancing at Feng Jin’s fierce expression. Her reluctance grew stronger. “Senior Sister Shen, will you ever return? If you don’t, Xuenong will come back, right? Otherwise, what will become of my position as Sect Leader?”
At the mention of the Sect Leader’s position, Ye Zhiyao, who had remained silent until now, finally spoke up. “Sect Leader, Xuenong and Xiao Jin aren’t the only Inner Sect Disciples.”
Bo Xuenong’s brow twitched slightly as she casually pressed her hand against it. She could sense the sudden surge of hostility from Ye Zhiyao, but it didn’t faze her. She had never been interested in the Sect Leader’s position to begin with.
Feng Jin, the other disciple called out, seemed equally oblivious to Ye Zhiyao’s words. She squeezed past the crowd to stand before Shen Yanting, tilting her head up to ask, “Martial Aunt Shen, since it’s a cultivation journey, can I come too?”
“Xiao Jin wants to go?” Shen Yanting asked.
As Shen Yanting spoke to Feng Jin, Bo Xuenong studied the younger disciple. The moment her gaze landed on Feng Jin, the latter’s inner thoughts flooded her mind:
Martial Uncle Shen took even Outer Sect Disciples on cultivation journeys in the original story, so she’ll definitely let me come too, right? But she never took Inner Sect Disciples in the book… Could she refuse me? Why would she take Outer Sect Disciples but not Inner Sect ones? The book never explained that! Ah! This is so frustrating! Please, don’t refuse me! I’m definitely stronger than those Outer Sect Disciples. I’d never hold Eldest Senior Sister back. Besides… Heh heh, if I go, Feng Yingbo will definitely come too. She’s a Nascent Soul cultivator, and even with her frail health, she’s still a formidable fighter… I absolutely won’t give the Male Lead a chance to play the hero and save the damsel in distress! If Eldest Senior Sister doesn’t owe the Male Lead a debt of gratitude, Martial Uncle Shen won’t choose suicide over killing him, and then Eldest Senior Sister won’t have to die either!
Bo Xuenong grew increasingly stunned as she listened. If Feng Jin’s thoughts were genuine, then the younger disciple truly cared deeply for her Senior Sister. But… Feng Yingbo’s health was frail?
Bo Xuenong’s dark eyes shifted to Feng Yingbo, who stood slightly behind Feng Jin with her mouth slightly agape. She seemed astonished by Feng Jin’s sudden proposal to accompany Shen Yanting. Her face showed no signs of illness, no deathly aura clung to her, and her breathing was steady. Apart from her petite frame, there was nothing outwardly abnormal about her.
A Nascent Soul Stage sword cultivator with a weak constitution?
The confusion in Bo Xuenong’s eyes deepened. Suddenly, Feng Jin adopted a wheedling tone, saying, “Martial Aunt Shen, I’ve never left the mountain before! I really want to go out and see the world. Would you and Eldest Senior Sister take me with you? I promise I’ll be very well-behaved, really!”
Feng Jin nearly raised her hand to swear an oath, leaving Fu Yunqing and the others utterly dumbfounded.
Feng Jin and Bo Xuenong’s reputations within the Sect were polar opposites. One was renowned for her kindness and gentleness, the other for her arrogance and volatility. While Feng Jin had always treated Shen Yanting with respect, she had never spoken to her in such a soft, pleading tone before.
Only Bo Xuenong remained unfazed. Having eavesdropped on Feng Jin’s thoughts for some time now, she knew the girl wasn’t as violent as she appeared. In fact, it was quite possible that while Feng Yingbo was pretending to be docile, Feng Jin was putting on a show of ferocity.
Even Feng Yingbo was startled by Feng Jin’s sudden change in demeanor. She hurried to Feng Jin’s side and asked, “Jin’er, are you… are you being affectionate?”
Feng Yingbo grabbed Feng Jin’s shoulders, her voice filled with aggrievedness. “You never even try to sweet-talk me! I could take you on a Cultivation Journey too!”
Feng Yingbo wasn’t exaggerating. She was the only member of the Imperial Tranquility Sect in the past millennium to have ventured out on a Cultivation Journey. Not only had she returned safely and alone, but she had also brought back Feng Jin as an infant, her strength beyond question.
Feng Jin covered her face. “Master, please stop talking.”
“You little ingrate,” Feng Yingbo scolded, but immediately softened, taking Shen Yanting’s hand. “Senior Sister Shen, please take Jin’er with you. And me too! We won’t be any trouble, I promise!”
“You’re going too?” Fu Yunqing interjected eagerly. “Then I want to go too!”
Fu Yunqing tried to squeeze forward, but Feng Yingbo, catching her out of the corner of her eye, promptly bumped her back with her hip. “Sect Leader, get in line!”
Having secured the best position to pester Shen Yanting, Feng Yingbo fixed her dark, gleaming eyes on Shen Yanting. “Senior Sister Shen, please, I’m begging you.”
Shen Yanting and Feng Yingbo had a good relationship.
Shortly after Feng Yingbo joined the sect, the Former Sect Leader passed away. Shen Yanting had taught Feng Yingbo much of what she knew, and even gifted her Lifebound Sword.
Against all expectations, Shen Yanting nodded. “Alright.”
“Senior Sister Shen, you’re the best!” Feng Yingbo exclaimed, immediately releasing Shen Yanting’s hand. She turned to Feng Jin, forcibly grabbed her hand, and slapped a high-five with her. “It’s done! Jin’er, aren’t you going to thank me?”
Feng Jin’s lips trembled as she turned her head away. “No.”
Feng Yingbo poked Feng Jin’s puffed-up cheek, muttering, “You’re such a stingy brat.”
Feng Jin: I’m not stingy! Eldest Senior Sister is the stingy one… Ah, I almost forgot about Eldest Senior Sister! What if she refuses to take us? Do I really have to go beg the Female Lead for help with Feng Yingbo? No, no, the Female Lead is too nice! It won’t work.
The moment these thoughts surfaced, Feng Jin darted to Bo Xuenong’s side.
She vigorously rubbed her cheeks and asked Bo Xuenong, “Eldest Senior Sister, will you take me with you?”
Bo Xuenong was about to answer when another stream of Feng Jin’s thoughts echoed in her mind.
Host, don’t put all your hopes on Bo Xuenong. Too many people in the Cultivation World are watching her.
Dead System, shut up! What’s the point of saying that now? I’ve wasted all the points I saved for two hundred years! Quick, join me in chanting! “We must protect Martial Aunt Shen’s life at all costs! Eldest Senior Sister must not die!”
Bo Xuenong’s ears twitched slightly. Under Feng Jin’s terrified gaze, she forcibly grabbed Feng Jin’s left hand and, mimicking Feng Yingbo’s earlier gesture, extended her own hand for a palm strike. “Good, you’re coming too!”
She had previously considered the Suspended Ink Sword her only true companion. But hearing Feng Jin’s resolute declaration to protect Shen Yanting, she suddenly felt Feng Jin was also a kindred spirit.
Though she hadn’t yet figured out Feng Jin’s origins, she had confirmed Feng Jin harbored no ill will toward Shen Yanting and identified the source of the other voice she had heard in Feng Jin’s mind.
Bo Xuenong had overheard Feng Jin calling her “Dead System” earlier.
Feng Jin was overwhelmed with joy, clutching the lingering warmth in her palm. “Eldest Senior Sister, you’re the best!” she exclaimed excitedly.
While Feng Jin was thrilled, Feng Yingbo grumbled under her breath, “Ungrateful.”
Bo Xuenong and the others heard her. Feng Jin, muttering to herself, turned back to Feng Yingbo and proactively took her hand. Feng Yingbo’s mood instantly brightened, her face lighting up as she playfully pinched Feng Jin’s cheek. Her exuberant demeanor was completely at odds with her role as Master.
Watching Feng Yingbo and Feng Jin interact was always a test of Bo Xuenong’s patience, so she turned to look at their Master instead.
Having agreed to bring Feng Jin and Feng Yingbo, she certainly couldn’t refuse Fu Yunqing.
Ye Zhiyao and Cui Huaizhou’s excitement nearly overflowed. They eagerly volunteered to oversee the Imperial Tranquility Sect’s defense and hastily led the disciples out of Warm Moon Hall, fearing Fu Yunqing and the others might change their minds about embarking on the Cultivation Journey.
Fu Yunqing gazed at the now-sparsely populated Warm Moon Hall. “It seems they still resent me as Sect Leader. They’re probably waiting for me to leave so they can fight for a new one.”
Feng Yingbo patted Fu Yunqing’s shoulder sympathetically. “Then you stay. We’ll go.”
Fu Yunqing rolled her eyes at Feng Yingbo. “I’m practically on my deathbed anyway. Since you’re going on a long journey, why not take me along for the ride?”
“Of course, we can,” Bo Xuenong replied. Noticing Shen Yanting’s darkening expression, she felt a rare pang of concern rather than murderous intent. “Sect Leader, who knows? We might encounter some opportunity along the way to extend your life. You won’t die—none of us really want you to.”
Fu Yunqing clapped her hands excitedly and turned to Shen Yanting. “Senior Sister Shen, see? I told you Xuenong and I are very close! She’s always looking out for me, worried I’ll die! Ha ha!”
Shen Yanting remained silent.
Bo Xuenong stared at Fu Yunqing, who was grinning from ear to ear, and felt a sudden pang of guilt. She unconsciously edged closer to Shen Yanting, stopping only when she could catch a whiff of that cool, ethereal fragrance.
Shen Yanting glanced at her sideways. Instead of pulling away, she subtly shifted closer to Bo Xuenong and retrieved a white jade pendant from her Storage Ring, handing it to her.
