- Episode 13 - Dinner with The Duke of Harrington
“Wow, this is amazing. I never expected her to be this beautiful. Right, Lord Lloyd? …This chicken is delicious.”
Since then, we moved to the dining hall. Upon learning that I hadn’t eaten since waking up, Duke Harrington kindly said, “We haven’t had dinner yet either. Let’s talk while we eat,” and to my great honor, we ended up having dinner together. Before I knew it, it seemed to have become a time for a late dinner.
After that, I was thoroughly examined by Mr. Curtis from various angles and observed to my heart’s content.
“A hair color like Michelle’s is something you don’t see every day. I’m really surprised. Even if she’s a beggar, I never expected such a beautiful pink color to turn pitch black like that. …Oh, from here it looks different than before. It looks shiny and purple. It’s strange. Really beautiful.”
While munching on his food, Mr. Curtis seems unable to take his eyes off my hair. He keeps glancing over at me repeatedly.
Yes. My hair is what you would call pink blonde. However, the pink hue is stronger than the blonde, so at first glance, it looks peach-colored. And it has a mysterious shine. Depending on the light, it can sparkle like gold or silver, have a rainbow-like luster, or, as Mr. Curtis just mentioned, take on a purplish hue.
My mother and the adults around me often praised my unusual hair color. In particular, my mother loved my hair very much and would carefully style it with various hair accessories every morning.
“Your skin is so pale. Seeing you like this, all cleaned up, you don’t look like a beggar at all. You look like a noble lady from some high-class family. But… with such beautiful hair, why did you cut it so carelessly? …Wait! No way… did someone cut it off for you? It could be worth money if sold, maybe some thugs in town…!”
“Curtis. Be quiet for a moment. She’s probably having trouble eating.”
As if his questions were endless, Mr. Curtis was being thoroughly interrogated by Duke Harrington, who then turned to me and said this.
“First, eat something. You won’t have any strength otherwise. It would be troublesome if you collapsed again.”
“Oh, thank you very much.”
I replied nervously and lowered my gaze to the many plates lined up in front of me.
Several types of freshly baked bread, jam, butter, cheese, biscuits, omelets, and salad, clear consommé soup with lots of ingredients, and a large chicken served sliced… Perhaps because the duke is at the table, it is very luxurious.
Just looking at it made my stomach growl, and my throat made a sound. Being careful not to eat too greedily, I scooped a spoonful of soup and brought it to my mouth.
Oh… so delicious…!!
Moved by the incredible deliciousness, I still take my time to savor the soup, omelet, and crispy bread. My stomach is so hungry that I want to shove everything into my mouth at once, but if I ate like that here, I would really be seen as a starving beggar.
Savoring each bite, I glanced over at the Duke of Harrington on the other side of the table.
Then the duke stopped eating and stared at me intently. My heart started pounding loudly. …Did I do something strange while eating?
Thinking that way and feeling anxious, the duke finally speaks.
“You are not of noble birth, are you?”
