- Chapter 62 - Sleeping Innocently Tonight
No sooner had they landed in Fancheng than Luo Xiaoxiao and Li Fanshuang were called away by their respective jobs before they could even enjoy a moment together.
Li Fanshuang headed to the film set, while Luo Xiaoxiao went to the stadium.
Due to the previous incident of a competitor cheating, all of Luo Xiaoxiao’s subsequent opponents had changed.
“What’s going on with you? Where have you been these past few days? Haven’t you been keeping up with sports news?” Min Nanxi looked at her like she was some clueless rookie, barely able to contain her frustration.
Luo Xiaoxiao scratched her head. “I went to Hucheng with my wife.”
“Huh?” Min Nanxi stared at her in disbelief. “You actually had time to go on a trip? I’m so jealous! Not only do you have such a beautiful wife, but you also have time to travel!”
As she spoke, her eyes actually turned red.
Luo Xiaoxiao grabbed her arm. “Hey, calm down, okay? I went because of my friend’s situation, not specifically for fun.”
“Right.” Min Nanxi’s tears vanished as quickly as they had appeared.
“Listen, there was a seafood rain a couple of days ago!” Min Nanxi’s eyes sparkled.
Luo Xiaoxiao let out an “ah,” realizing that was something she had caused.
Luo Xiaoxiao said, “Didn’t the experts already say it was a normal natural phenomenon?”
“It is normal, sure, but that’s not the issue now.” Min Nanxi slapped her thigh.
Luo Xiaoxiao blinked. “Then what’s the problem?”
Min Nanxi looked annoyed and whispered in Luo Xiaoxiao’s ear, “I was training that day and missed the seafood rain.”
Luo Xiaoxiao: “…You didn’t want to pick some up to cook, did you?”
Soon, Min Nanxi revealed her true thoughts. “My grandma made a ton of seafood that day.”
Luo Xiaoxiao covered her face. “How about we wait for the next one?”
“Forget it, forget it!” Min Nanxi waved her hand. “Let me tell you, I never want to see that kind of situation again. It was like the apocalypse! So terrifying!”
Luo Xiaoxiao’s mind flashed back to the image of half a fish smacking Chen Yu in the face—it had been particularly disgusting.
She shook her head, trying to banish the absurd thoughts from her mind. Don’t think about it, don’t think about it. If she didn’t dwell on it, these things would never become real.
“Listen, your next opponent is tough—she almost went pro.”
Luo Xiaoxiao frowned. That didn’t make sense. She had checked the list—there shouldn’t be anyone like that left.
“Who is it? I remember—”
Before she could finish, a familiar voice rang out as Sun Yumeng walked over.
Luo Xiaoxiao’s eyes lit up at the sight of her. “What are you doing here?”
“If I didn’t come, who would you fight next?”
Min Nanxi’s expression changed as she glanced at Luo Xiaoxiao. “Huh? You two know each other?”
“Yep!” Luo Xiaoxiao replied without hesitation.
Sun Yumeng pointed at Min Nanxi and said to Luo Xiaoxiao, “She’s my good friend, though I’m nowhere near as skilled as she is.”
Luo Xiaoxiao nodded. “Oh, so you two are friends!”
What a coincidence!
Luo Xiaoxiao slapped her thigh, “Then later we’ll—”
Before she could finish her sentence, she was hoisted up by the others, “Let’s go eat something delicious!”
Luo Xiaoxiao’s eyes lit up. Sure enough, these two were exactly on the same wavelength as her.
Just as she had mentally picked out a restaurant, Min Nanxi’s voice rang out.
“You’re still coming to train with me. Now that I have backup, I can’t let you beat me again.”
“Exactly, your head is always full of food,” Sun Yumeng chimed in from the side.
Luo Xiaoxiao snorted and gave up resisting, muttering, “My head is actually full of my wife.”
Sun Yumeng and Min Nanxi exchanged a glance.
Sun Yumeng clicked her tongue, “Is she a love-struck fool?”
Min Nanxi shrugged, “No shame there. If my wife were Li Fanshuang, I’d probably be a love-struck fool too.”
Luo Xiaoxiao nodded vigorously. Finally, someone who understood her!
But her thoughts remained unspoken.
From now on, they wouldn’t need to weigh in for competitions anymore.
They could eat without restrictions, but Min Nanxi was like a monk, always torturing herself, claiming this diet was healthier.
Luo Xiaoxiao disagreed—her body was already so frail, why couldn’t she eat more?
Thwack—
A punch came at Luo Xiaoxiao from the left by Min Nanxi. She barely dodged it, only for Sun Yumeng to strike from the right.
Luo Xiaoxiao jumped back, “Two against one? That’s not fair!”
Sun Yumeng said coolly, her eyes gleaming with excitement. So this was the hidden skill Luo had kept back at the club.
“We’re honing you. If you can take us both on, you’ll be unstoppable in the competition.”
“Exactly!” Min Nanxi added, “Listen, this match is your ticket—if you win, you might even get to go to Las Vegas.”
“For what?” Luo Xiaoxiao dodged another punch. Min Nanxi was really going all out.
Sun Yumeng continued, “You could fight in the UFC. My brother went too.”
“Title defense?” Luo Xiaoxiao blocked a kick from Sun Yumeng.
“Not exactly. Someone challenged him.”
“Huh?” Luo Xiaoxiao stepped back, waving her hands. “Stop, I’m tired.”
“How are you so out of shape?” Sun Yumeng clicked her tongue, scanning Luo up and down. “Look at how weak you’ve become!”
“I’m not weak!” Luo Xiaoxiao protested, puffing out her chest to prove her strength.
Min Nanxi covered her mouth, laughing. “What’s with you? You’re acting like such an Alpha!”
Luo Xiaoxiao: Suddenly, my back feels cold—oh, it’s just my friends airing my dirty laundry.
Sun Yumeng stayed silent. She knew Luo Xiaoxiao’s secret well enough.
Seems Min Nanxi was still in the dark. But perhaps it was better kept that way.
After all, Li Fanshuang was a public figure who had been in the industry for years. If people found out she was an Omega, she might face online harassment.
Sun Yumeng cleared her throat lightly. “You too—going to Hucheng for something so important without telling me.”
“Why should I tell you?” Luo Xiaoxiao crossed her arms. “It’s not like you could give me any money. I went to see our boss.”
“Zhu Yuxin also went to Hucheng?” Sun Yumeng was puzzled.
Luo Xiaoxiao nodded. “Let me tell you, it was absolutely wild. Her father-in-law didn’t like her, so he took Yuyu to live with him. So Zhu Yuxin went to Yuyu’s house and became their nanny.”
“What on earth?” Min Nanxi didn’t understand—Luo Xiaoxiao was talking about people she didn’t even know.
“Huh?” Sun Yumeng scratched her head. “Oh right, I forgot you don’t know them. Here’s the thing…”
And so, Sun Yumeng recounted the entire love-hate saga between Lu Yu and Zhu Yuxin.
The next half hour was pure gossip time for the three of them.
Min Nanxi slapped the floor. “What kind of mess is this? That Lu Ling definitely isn’t a good person!”
“Exactly!” Luo Xiaoxiao said indignantly. “Just hearing his name tells you he’s no good!”
“Isn’t that a bit prejudiced of you to say?” Sun Yumeng scratched her head.
Luo Xiaoxiao’s expression shifted as she recalled her first meeting with Sun Weiliang.
“Your brother wouldn’t happen to—”
“Not at all,” Sun Yumeng waved her hand dismissively. “Let me tell you, my brother’s marriage prospects have become the most dreaded topic in our family. My mom’s already said that as long as he brings home someone alive—whether they’re male or female, Alpha or Omega—she’ll take it.”
Luo Xiaoxiao sucked in a sharp breath. “Your mom’s that open-minded now?”
“It’s not about being open-minded,” Min Nanxi patted Luo Xiaoxiao’s shoulder. “My mom said the same thing. It’s not tolerance—it’s exhaustion.”
“Exhaustion?” Luo Xiaoxiao didn’t get it. What did that even mean?
“It means she’s sick of seeing me at home!” Min Nanxi rolled her eyes. Did she really have to spell it out? How embarrassing!
Sun Yumeng sighed. “Same here. My mom can’t stand the sight of my brother anymore.”
Luo Xiaoxiao shot her a glance. “You’re not exactly young either. Hasn’t your mom said anything to you?”
“Why would she?” Sun Yumeng shrugged. “I’m the family treasure! My mom would happily support me forever!”
Luo Xiaoxiao let out an “Oh.” “Single and proud, huh?”
“Ugh!” Sun Yumeng turned away, declaring a unilateral five-minute silent treatment toward Luo Xiaoxiao.
But it didn’t last long before Luo Xiaoxiao’s phone rang.
It was Li Fanshuang calling.
Luo Xiaoxiao answered. “Sweetheart, yes!~!”
Whatever was said on the other end, Luo Xiaoxiao’s smile never faded.
Min Nanxi found that grin downright blinding.
She leaned toward Sun Yumeng. “Don’t you think her happiness is just… obnoxiously loud?”
“Absolutely!” Sun Yumeng’s mouth twisted in displeasure. What was there to flaunt? She’d have a partner someday too!
The two exchanged a knowing smile. After a moment, Min Nanxi said, “Why don’t we just make do with each other then!”
“How could that work?!” Sun Yumeng’s face clearly showed rejection.
“Come on, it’s not like I’m some casual person either!” Min Nanxi retorted.
But the moment those words were spoken, something subtle shifted between them.
Luo Xiaoxiao hung up the phone and looked at the pair. “What’s going on with you two? Why are you sitting so far apart?” She eyed the newly formed chasm between them with confusion.
Both women fidgeted awkwardly, neither speaking to the other.
After a long silence, Luo Xiaoxiao couldn’t take it anymore. “What exactly are you two doing?”
Sun Yumeng replied, “Oh, nothing at all. What are you talking about?”
Min Nanxi chimed in, “We’ve always been like this, haven’t we?”
Luo Xiaoxiao thought: Am I going blind? Weren’t you two perfectly happy and natural when you were hitting me earlier?
So you can only talk properly when you’re beating me up?
“Let’s have another round then.”
“Sure!”
“Fine!”
Though their responses differed, both stood up simultaneously. Luo Xiaoxiao raised her hands resignedly, “I knew it. You two get especially excited when hitting me.”
“Exactly!” Sun Yumeng narrowed her eyes, her face alight with excitement as she looked at Luo Xiaoxiao.
Luo Xiaoxiao took a frightened step back, only to bump into Min Nanxi behind her.
“Where do you think you’re going, Xiaoxiao? Let’s have some fun with you!” Min Nanxi teased.
Luo Xiaoxiao eyed Min Nanxi warily, convinced the woman was saying something that couldn’t be broadcasted. Had her mind really become that dirty lately?
Her thoughts raced wildly, but the punches came anyway.
Fortunately, Luo Xiaoxiao was a boxing champion. Even against two opponents, she held her own, and the three exchanged blows all afternoon.
They only stopped when the clock struck seven in the evening.
Exhausted and starving, the trio collapsed in the octagon cage. Luo Xiaoxiao patted her companions, “Let’s go for hot pot. My treat.”
Sun Yumeng rolled over and snapped, “Hot pot? Do you realize you have a match tomorrow? What if you get diarrhea after eating that?”
Luo Xiaoxiao thumped her chest confidently, “Don’t worry, I’ve got an iron stomach. Works perfectly fine—no chance of diarrhea.”
Min Nanxi sat up, “I think Sun Yumeng’s right. You have a competition tomorrow. Better skip it and keep it simple tonight.”
Luo Xiaoxiao protested, “No way. I have my own rhythm.” She pulled out her phone to search for nearby hot pot restaurants.
But her phone was swiftly plucked from her hands by gentle fingers.
“Wife?” Luo Xiaoxiao looked up to see Li Fanshuang standing before her unexpectedly.
Li Fanshuang waved the phone teasingly, “Don’t you have a match tomorrow? Why are you still eating junk food?”
“But I can’t just starve, can I?” Luo Xiaoxiao pouted, a rare sight indeed.
Min Nanxi rubbed her sore arm—Luo Xiaoxiao hadn’t looked nearly this pitiful when punching her earlier.
Sun Yumeng scoffed, “Stop pretending. The whole innocent act doesn’t suit you.”
The mere thought of her being an Alpha made Sun Yumeng feel overwhelmed. What kind of Alpha was like this?
Well, there was one—her dear brother was exactly this kind of Alpha, always on the verge of tears.
“Alright then, do you want to go eat with me, or with them?”
Li Fanshuang’s voice was gentle, warming Min Nanxi’s heart as she listened nearby. The happiest thing about knowing Luo Xiaoxiao was getting to dine with Li Fanshuang often.
This was her goddess, after all. Min Nanxi felt like she’d hit the jackpot.
She nudged Luo Xiaoxiao’s arm and gave her a pleading look.
Luo Xiaoxiao stared at those puppy-dog eyes but didn’t soften. Instead, she playfully swatted Min Nanxi’s face away. “Get lost!”
She wanted some alone time with her darling wife—no interruptions allowed.
A gentle smile lingered on Li Fanshuang’s lips as if she could read Luo Xiaoxiao’s mischievous thoughts. She leaned in and whispered in her ear, “I have a press conference tomorrow, and you have a match. So tonight, we’ll have to keep it vegetarian.”
Hearing the word “vegetarian,” Luo Xiaoxiao’s entire mood soured. After indulging for so long, now I have to be a monk?!
She turned her face away stubbornly.
Li Fanshuang arched a brow and placed her phone back in Luo Xiaoxiao’s hand. “If that’s the case, then for both our sakes, we should sleep separately tonight. You can find a hotel.”
With that, she walked off without looking back. Luo Xiaoxiao shot to her feet.
Watching Li Fanshuang’s retreating figure, she wailed loudly, “Sister, you’re abandoning me!”
The word “sister” was Li Fanshuang’s weak spot. Whenever Luo Xiaoxiao used it, she couldn’t resist.
With a sigh, Li Fanshuang turned back. “Tonight really isn’t the time. Didn’t you say you’d take care of me? Is this how you do it?”
Luo Xiaoxiao exhaled in defeat, burying all her amorous thoughts before they could take root. “Fine. Let’s just have dinner together tonight. I’m starving.”
Li Fanshuang caressed her cheek. “I understand. I’ve already reserved a table at the hotel. You can all come. Xiao Sun, did Zhu Yuxin book a hotel for you?”
Sun Yumeng blinked in confusion. “Uh… I don’t think so. Let me call—”
Li Fanshuang cut her off with a wave. “Never mind. She’s probably discussing wedding plans with Lu Yu right now. I doubt she arranged anything.”
“Then what do I do?” Sun Yumeng scratched her head anxiously. With all the recent events, hotel prices in the area had skyrocketed. She couldn’t afford a luxury stay.
Li Fanshuang sensed her dilemma but could only shrug helplessly. “There’s been a surge in bookings lately. Whether it’s our hotel or nearby inns, everything’s fully booked. You might be in a tight spot.”
“No worries!” Min Nanxi thumped her chest. “You can crash at my place if needed.”
Sun Yumeng’s lips twitched. “That’s… not ideal. Your place isn’t exactly convenient.”
“I’ve moved out now. You can stay at my rented apartment.”
Luo Xiaoxiao’s eyes gleamed, sensing some unspoken secret between the two.
She subtly nudged Li Fanshuang’s arm.
Li Fanshuang glanced sideways at her with a raised eyebrow: Got it.
She had discovered that her wife was quite the gossip, though Li Fanshuang herself was no stranger to indulging in rumors either.
However, Li Fanshuang’s gossip was usually limited to their own social circle. As for the two women in front of them, she wasn’t familiar with them and wasn’t particularly interested in their affairs.
Besides, in that novel, she remembered Min Nanxi had only appeared briefly.
“In the book, they—” Before Li Fanshuang could finish, Luo Xiaoxiao covered her mouth.
Luo Xiaoxiao shushed her, pressing a finger to her own lips, signaling Li Fanshuang not to ask.
Li Fanshuang shot her a questioning look: What’s wrong?
Luo Xiaoxiao smiled at the two behind them before grabbing her things. “I’m going to change. You two think about what you want to eat.”
With that, she pulled Li Fanshuang away.
Only when Luo Xiaoxiao was certain they were out of earshot did she finally relax.
“They’re both fighters—their hearing is sharp. If they found out their world is just a novel, they’d probably freak out.”
Li Fanshuang burst into laughter. “It’s not as dramatic as you’re making it out to be. People aren’t that fragile.”
Luo Xiaoxiao sighed. “Let’s just keep this between us.”
“Fine. But are you really set on hotpot again?” Li Fanshuang frowned. She was already tired of it, but Luo Xiaoxiao seemed addicted.
Every time they went out to eat, she’d choose the same thing—hotpot.
Luo Xiaoxiao gave her a pleading look. “Is that not okay?”
Li Fanshuang caved, though she made one last attempt for herself. “I want barbecue. There’s a place with really good tomahawk steak.”
“Then let’s go there!” Luo Xiaoxiao’s resolve wasn’t as firm as expected.
Li Fanshuang chuckled and took Luo Xiaoxiao’s hand. “Do you want to take a shower first?”
“What did you say?” Luo Xiaoxiao’s eyes darkened, as if she’d just heard some kind of suggestive hint.
Li Fanshuang quickly yanked her hand back in alarm. “Can’t you think about anything else?”
“I—” Luo Xiaoxiao pouted. Wasn’t this Li Fanshuang’s own doing?
She used to be a perfectly upright young woman, but after spending so much time with her, her mind just… wasn’t pure anymore.
With her gorgeous wife right beside her, telling her to take a shower—how was that not a hint?
Li Fanshuang, however, remained firm. “No! Go wash up and cleanse your dirty thoughts. We both have important things to do tomorrow.”
“Oh.” Luo Xiaoxiao’s head drooped like a dejected little rabbit.
Li Fanshuang didn’t bother arguing further and ignored her.
As it turned out, her approach worked—Luo Xiaoxiao obediently scurried off to shower.
Ding-dong—
A notification popped up on Li Fanshuang’s phone—a finalized promotional photo sent by Chen Yu.
Chen Yu: For tomorrow’s styling, stick with this set.
Li Fanshuang was about to reply with an “Okay,” but then she spotted Fu Xinting’s face in the poster. Wait, didn’t she already quit?
Â
Li Fanshuang: What’s Fu Xinting doing here?
“Chen Yu: Her scenes have already wrapped up. The remaining parts with Zhiyu can use a body double.”
Li Fanshuang let out a cold snort. So they still couldn’t use Xiaoxiao’s face in this drama?
What had she been doing all this time then?
The mere thought of Fu Xinting made her grind her teeth in anger. Why was this eliminated contestant allowed to be here?
Li Fanshuang wondered if there was some system manipulation at play here.
Hadn’t she already given up on me?
Why was she still coming to the event tomorrow? What was she planning?
Unfortunately, separated by distance, Li Fanshuang couldn’t hear the thoughts of the system or Fu Xinting, so she couldn’t be sure what Fu Xinting’s next move would be.
Click—
Luo Xiaoxiao stepped out, frowning when she saw Li Fanshuang’s troubled expression. “What’s wrong?”
Li Fanshuang pressed her lips together, hesitating for a moment. “Fu Xinting will also be at the press conference tomorrow.”
Luo Xiaoxiao’s brows furrowed deeper. “What time is your event?”
“Four in the afternoon.”
Luo Xiaoxiao’s frown deepened. Her own competition was at three, lasting half an hour—meaning she wouldn’t make it in time for the press conference.
“Don’t overthink it,” Li Fanshuang said, gently stroking Luo Xiaoxiao’s cheek. She knew Luo Xiaoxiao wanted to be there.
Luo Xiaoxiao held her hand. “I don’t trust that woman.”
“I know. So I’ll be extra careful. You don’t have to worry so much.”
“How can I not worry?” Luo Xiaoxiao sighed. “Listen, didn’t the system upgrade before? I’m afraid it might make a comeback. It feels like its sole purpose is to target you.”
Li Fanshuang hummed in agreement. “I know. But what happens if someone abandons their mission?”
A face flashed in Luo Xiaoxiao’s mind—Yuan Zhiqing, another pursuer whose target had also been Li Fanshuang.
Now she was with Lu Chenfeng. Did that count as abandoning the mission?
Would those who gave up face severe punishment?
Luo Xiaoxiao narrowed her eyes. Maybe she had a way to deal with that system after all.
“Sweetheart.”
“Hmm?” Li Fanshuang looked up.
“Call Lu Chenfeng. There’s something I need to ask Yuan Zhiqing… or rather, I need to ask her system.”
