- Episode 15 - On the Way to the Hotel
They arrived at the local airport exactly on schedule.
“……”
As they disembarked from the plane and headed toward the arrival lobby, a strange sensation ran down Hayato’s spine. It was the same “danger-sensing instinct” that had saved his life countless times in another world—and now, it was sharply reacting here.
The moment he sensed it, Hayato casually scanned his surroundings. On the surface, the airport looked perfectly ordinary. But to Hayato, multiple hostile presences were obvious. And those hostile intentions were clearly directed at his comrade, Go.
Blending into the crowd, Hayato detected several men keeping a discreet distance while keeping a close eye on Go. They were signaling to each other with subtle glances. Their cold, calculating eyes and whatever they had hidden in their pockets were setting off every one of Hayato’s alarm bells.
He instinctively grasped their positions and sent a glance toward Go. Receiving Hayato’s look, Go narrowed his eyes slightly and gave a small nod in return. Seeing this, Josuke also became more alert. Sharing the danger among the group gave Hayato some reassurance. He kept up his watchfulness.
Go approached the leader of the accompanying bodyguards and whispered softly.
“Seems like there are some suspicious individuals around.”
The sudden comment from their protectee caught the leader off guard, though he didn’t let it show. He continued to look straight ahead, replying in a low voice.
“Suspicious individuals, sir?”
From the leader’s perspective, there was nothing unusual. No sense of danger. He checked the surroundings just in case, but still couldn’t find anything or anyone that seemed off.
He tried to figure out what Go had seen to make him suspicious, but couldn’t pinpoint any cause.
“Perhaps it’s just your imagination?”
Hearing that, Go gave a wry smile.
“Maybe so. Could just be me being paranoid.”
He shrugged lightly.
“But still, stay on alert, just in case.”
“Understood. We’ll increase security.”
Obeying their protectee’s request, the leader promised to heighten vigilance. He seemed to think Go was just being overly cautious about potential threats—and that alleviating those worries was also part of a bodyguard’s job.
The leader used his radio to contact the rest of the team, instructing them to raise their alert level.
The group exited the airport and headed toward a large van that had been prepared for them. It was a black, high-end vehicle with plenty of space for everyone. This would take them to the hotel that would serve as their base of operations.
One of the bodyguards conducted a quick inspection of the vehicle. At the same time, Josuke, feigning casualness, meticulously examined the van himself. His sharp eyes scanned beneath and around the car, as if sensing something out of place.
Once Josuke gave a subtle nod confirming that all was clear, Go finally boarded the vehicle.
The seating arrangement inside was as follows: the driver and the lead bodyguard sat up front; Go sat in the middle of the second row, flanked on both sides by bodyguards. Behind them sat Hayato and Josuke. The last row was occupied by the remaining two bodyguards.
The van began to move slowly.
Once they exited the airport and merged onto the main road, traffic increased. Hayato stared out the window, but in truth, he was closely monitoring the vehicle’s movements. From the moment they left the airport, he had noticed a car tailing them.
When would they make their move?
Hayato remained vigilant, keeping a calm and natural posture as he kept watch on their surroundings.
The group was now on their way to the hotel that would serve as their base. Inside the vehicle, a quiet tension lingered. Go reviewed some documents on his tablet, while Jousuke pretended to check emails on his smartphone.
And then—it happened.
“They’re coming!”
Hayato’s voice rang through the van. He was the first to sense the danger and gave a low warning to alert the others. The moment Go and Josuke heard his words, they braced themselves for impact.
Out of the corner of their eyes, they spotted a car rapidly approaching. It was the same sedan that had been tailing them—now suddenly accelerating and closing in from the side. Before the bodyguards could react, the car was almost on top of them.
Cries of shock erupted.
“W-What!?”
“Whoa!?”
“They’re hitting us!?”
“Watch out!”
The sedan slammed into them at full speed from the side. With a harsh metallic crunch, the van was jolted sideways by the impact.
A violent shock rocked the vehicle. Thanks to the seatbelts, no one was seriously hurt, but the van swayed heavily. The windows groaned under the pressure, and the cargo inside the vehicle scattered about. The driver gripped the steering wheel tightly, struggling to keep the van under control.
As the bodyguards shouted in panic and scrambled to assess the situation, Hayato, Go, and Josuke remained calm—experienced and ready for the next wave of danger.
