- Episode 29 - The Day of the First Stream
Morning sunlight poured through the window as Hayato opened his eyes. Sitting up, he looked at the calendar—today’s date was circled in red. It was the day of his first stream as a Vtuber.
“Finally.”
After getting ready and grabbing a quick breakfast, Hayato headed to the office.
As he opened the office door, he was greeted by a flurry of activity. Staff members were setting up equipment and running final checks.
Amid the busy scene, Hayato spotted a familiar figure standing by the window. The sunlight glinted off her green-tinted hair.
“Long time no see, Hayato.”
The woman who turned to greet him was Seika. She had just returned from an overseas business trip, and despite the fatigue showing on her face from the long flight, her eyes held a determined sparkle.
“You’re early, Seika.”
“Can’t afford to be late on a day like this.”
Seika smiled as she brushed her hair back.
“How’s the stream prep going?”
“Smoothly. Everyone’s already here. Josuke is in the meeting room with the promo team doing a final check, and Go is giving instructions to the tech staff.”
Hayato looked around the room and could hear Go’s authoritative voice echoing from one side.
“And Riri is over there.”
Seika pointed to where Riri sat intently in front of a computer, her fingers flying across the keyboard.
“Riri, how’s it going?”
“Ah, Hayato!”
She stopped typing and looked up, smiling brightly.
“I’m doing the final checks. Fine-tuning the motion data. I want everything to be perfect before we go live.”
“Thanks. Just don’t overdo it.”
“It’s okay. I want to do this.”
Her voice was a little faster than usual, and there was a slight tension to it. As they talked, Josuke emerged from the meeting room. Hayato called out to him.
“Josuke, how’s it looking?”
“Hey, Hayato. It’s not even time yet, and we’ve already got a huge number of people waiting. Way beyond what we expected.”
Josuke walked over to a nearby computer and pulled up the stream’s waiting screen, displaying the number of viewers in the queue.
“Whoa, a thousand people? That’s amazing.”
Hayato’s eyes widened in surprise, and Josuke let out a quiet chuckle.
“Social media marketing’s paying off exactly as planned. And this number’s only going to grow.”
“That’s something to look forward to.”
Hayato couldn’t quite imagine how many viewers would end up joining.
“Double-check the timing of the sound effects. Also, confirm the backup systems are fully operational—hey.”
Go was giving directions to the staff. Noticing Hayato, he gave a small wave.
“Morning, Hayato. Everything’s on track. Equipment’s good, staff are in position.”
He stepped closer to Hayato and lowered his voice slightly.
“Let’s go easy on Seika. She just got back from overseas. She really pushed herself to match everyone’s schedule.”
“Yeah… got it.”
The five of them headed to the studio area, where high-precision motion capture cameras had been set up. Each of them had a designated streaming space.
“It’s just a few hours until we go live. Let’s begin the final rehearsal.”
Following the staff member’s cue, Hayato and the others reviewed the stream’s flow—starting with self-introductions, then sharing the early episodes of their adventures in another world. They were a little stiff at first, but the conversation gradually began to flow, and the old chemistry among them began to resurface. It felt like they were slipping back into the way things used to be. They all felt it.
When the clock showed thirty minutes to go, a staff member gave an update.
“Viewers waiting: over 4,500! That’s more than four times our goal!”
“It’s still going up?”
“Didn’t expect this kind of turnout…”
Hayato and Josuke were stunned, while Riri’s face tensed.
“Will I be okay… with so many people watching?”
Now that she had a concrete number, the reality of it was hitting her. She was visibly trembling.
“You’ll be fine.”
Hayato placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. They had all worked so hard to prepare—he believed in that.
Feeling the warmth of his hand, Riri took a deep breath and slowly steadied herself.
“Thanks, Hayato. You’re right—this all started because we wanted to share our story.”
With the final adjustments complete, they activated the motion capture system. On the monitor, their avatars appeared—resurrected through modern technology, they were perfect recreations of their past selves.
“Ten seconds.”
The countdown began.
“5, 4, 3, 2, 1…”
Hayato took a deep breath and pressed the stream button. For a moment, silence.
“Did we start?”
The monitor displayed the avatars of the comrades who once fought together in another world. This was the debut of what they had prepared for.
“Hello, everyone! Nice to meet you—good morning, good evening! I’m Hayato. Is everything working?”
The avatar’s mouth moved in sync with Hayato’s voice, with a fluid, lifelike motion that made it feel more than just virtual.
“All good, Hayato. Hello, I’m Lilia.”
Riri’s avatar, the wise mage Lilia, smiled elegantly.
“Name’s John.”
Josuke’s avatar, a well-informed fixer with many faces, gave a small bow.
“I’m Celestia.”
Seika’s avatar gently waved her hand.
“Name’s Gallet. Pleased to meet ya.”
Go’s avatar pounded his chest with strength. On the screen, a flood of comments began pouring in:
– Amazing! The movement looks so natural!
– Sawa’s character designs are on another level
– Lilia-chan is adorable!
– Gallet’s voice is so cool
– Debuting with all five at once? They’re serious about this!
The monitor lit up with a stream of praise and excitement.
“Hayato, look! Everyone seems really happy!”
Riri was beaming. The others each showed their joy in their own way—Josuke smiled contentedly, Seika was quietly moved, and Go wore a proud expression.
Riri’s wish—to tell their story as a real memory—was now becoming reality.
“Alright then…”
Hayato spoke directly to the viewers through the screen.
“Let us tell you our story—an adventure we truly lived in another world.”
