- Episode 32 - A New Gimmick (Game Production)
A month had passed since their debut, and Hayato and the others’ streaming activities were running smoothly. They were gaining attention, their viewership was increasing, and the reactions to their streams were positive.
Most of the streams featured Hayato and Riri as the main hosts, with the schedule primarily arranged around their availability.
Josuke joined whenever his time allowed, entertaining the audience with his calm insights and sharp commentary.
Go participated in between his duties at the Tetsumura Group, with his availability fluctuating depending on how busy he was.
Seika had the lowest participation rate. Constantly traveling overseas and racing against research deadlines, she rarely managed to appear on streams—something she regretted. Still, viewers appreciated her as a rare character.
One day, Riri gathered all the members at the IVE office. Even Seika managed to adjust her schedule to attend, making it a long-awaited full-member meeting.
“I have something I want to discuss with everyone regarding the stream.”
Riri’s serious expression made Hayato lean forward instinctively.
“What’s wrong? Did something happen?”
“The streams are going well, but…”
Riri paused for a moment before continuing.
“I think it’s time to introduce a new gimmick.”
“But things are going smoothly as they are, aren’t they?”
Seika tilted her head in confusion.
“The audience response is great too.”
She felt a little guilty for not being able to participate often but still questioned whether a change was really necessary.
Hayato, Josuke, and Go all nodded in agreement with Seika’s opinion. But Riri shook her head firmly, passionately insisting that staying the same wasn’t good enough.
“Maintaining the status quo isn’t enough. We need to think of ways to make things even more enjoyable for our viewers.”
“We had a great start, and we’ve been able to maintain consistent streams since.”
Josuke quietly began to analyze the situation.
“But many new VTubers have debuted since us. This industry changes quickly, and audiences do get bored easily.”
Josuke showed understanding toward Riri’s point.
“So, what do you suggest?”
Go crossed his arms and asked, interest evident in his voice.
“Actually… I’ve been making a game.”
“A game?”
Everyone but Riri exclaimed in surprise.
“It’s the RPG I mentioned briefly before.”
She said this as she operated her computer. A sleekly designed title screen appeared on the monitor, followed by a visual of their stream avatars posed heroically.
“Whoa, you made this yourself, Riri?”
Seika leaned in with curiosity.
“Yes, I did!”
Riri smiled proudly.
“I got help from illustrator Sawada-san, and I was introduced to a music composer and producer. I handled the programming myself.”
Riri had been working independently on this without the others knowing.
“Can we already play it?”
Go stared at the screen with intense interest.
“Yes. It’s still under development, but the beginning part is fully playable.”
Riri pulled out a gamepad, connected it to the computer, and handed it to Go. He sat down eagerly while the other four gathered around him to see the game that Riri had made.
“This is an action RPG where you relive Hayato’s adventures.”
The game began with a scene where Hayato was summoned to another world. The text reflected the memories Hayato had shared on stream. The screen transitioned rapidly.
Enemies appeared—familiar monsters from the Demon King’s army they had once battled. Hayato recognized them immediately.
“So it’s action-based, huh?”
Go gripped the controller, testing each button. The on-screen avatar was Hayato’s streaming avatar, which he could now control freely. The combat looked engaging.
“Nice, the response is good.”
Go’s eyes sparkled.
After a short tutorial, the game moved into the first battle scene. Go, controlling the character “Gallet,” fought enemies using attacks, dodges, and special moves—but struggled due to the unfamiliar controls.
“Whoa! I lost already?”
“Let me try next.”
With Go defeated, Josuke took over.
“I see, so it works like this.”
Josuke quickly got the hang of it, defeating enemies with precise moves. Everyone was impressed by his skill. Hayato felt a small surge of pride seeing his avatar win against the enemies.
“Impressive, Josuke.”
“They’re just early-game enemies. Even if it’s just a game, I can’t afford to lose.”
Though Josuke replied calmly, his expression showed he was enjoying it.
“This is pretty fun. Hayato, give it a shot.”
“Sure, I’ll give it a go.”
Hayato took over and started playing. It took him a little while to get used to the controls, but he soon found himself immersed in the game world. The scenery reminded him of the other world he had visited.
The game’s backgrounds, buildings, and even the monsters were faithful recreations of what Hayato had actually seen in that other world—triggering vivid memories.
Right, it really was like this.
It wasn’t just a generic fantasy world—it was a reconstructed version of the alternate reality they had experienced.
“I wanted people to understand more about that other world.”
“The immersion is real. Just as you intended, the story feels unforgettable.”
Josuke offered his analysis.
“Exactly. So I was thinking—what if we announce the game on stream, showcase the development process, and do a live gameplay stream together?”
That was Riri’s proposed new gimmick. The others responded enthusiastically.
“Sounds great. Let’s do it.”
“Game streaming is one of the most popular content formats for VTubers.”
Josuke added.
“But we’ve mostly done talk-based streams until now. This could be a great way to attract a new audience.”
He, too, was on board.
“Plus, since it’s based on our own adventures and Riri made it herself, we can give commentary and behind-the-scenes details during the stream.”
Seika added with a bright smile.
“I’m going through a busy period, but I’ll join in as much as I can.”
Go nodded firmly in agreement.
And so, a new streaming project was launched. With Hayato as the player and Riri as the creator providing commentary, they decided to do a “developing-in-progress” gameplay stream of the game.
