Chapter 8 — Heartbeat Progress 0.8% — “Don’t Move, Behave Yourself…”
Everyone was watching them. Gu Che could only lift his wine glass and gently clinked it with Xiao Yang’s.
Everyone applauded and started to cheer loudly.
“The boss hasn’t drunk yet, come on, Yangzi.”
“Hurry up, show your sincerity.”
“Yes, yes.”
“One glass isn’t enough, you have to drink three.”
…
Xiao Yang held the wine, slowly shaking his head, “I can’t anymore, I really can’t drink.”
He felt dizzy and reached out his hand, trying to steady himself on the edge of the table.
His vision blurred and split in two. He missed the table and suddenly fell forward.
“Ah!”
Ding…
“Ouch.”
…
The accident happened abruptly. Amid a few screams and the sound of clinking glasses, Xiao Yang fell straight onto Gu Che, his nose hitting Gu Che’s shoulder sharply, causing him to cry out in pain.
The half cup of white wine in Xiao Yang’s hand, and Gu Che’s half cup of red wine, both spilled onto Gu Che’s suit, leaving a bright red stain.
“Oh my God.”
“This is over.”
“Quick, quick, help him up.”
Everyone hurriedly helped Xiao Yang up, anxiously watching Gu Che’s expression, afraid he would get angry.
If they hadn’t egged Xiao Yang on to drink, he wouldn’t have drunk so much or fallen onto the boss and soaked his suit.
Fortunately, Gu Che was mentally prepared and didn’t get angry at all. He glanced down at himself calmly, stood up with ease, and brushed the wine off his suit.
Before Gu Che said anything, Xiao Yang suddenly pinched his nose and complained, “Boss, your shoulder is way too hard, you hurt me badly.”
“Pfft…”
Someone couldn’t help but laugh out loud, which caused others to laugh too.
Gu Che looked up helplessly, his expression slightly changed, “This idiot.”
He stepped forward two steps and helped Xiao Yang walk towards the restroom.
Along the way, red liquid dripped onto the floor; Xiao Yang was bleeding from his nose.
The situation was worrying. Zhang Rui quickly followed to help and asked the staff to clean up.
Behind them, the others stopped laughing and watched them leave silently.
“Looks like the boss really has a hard shoulder — it made him bleed from the nose.”
“Probably hit the bone just right.”
“Xiao Gong, you’re quite the troublemaker.”
“This kid can’t handle his alcohol; don’t push him to drink next time.”
“Should we go help?”
“Forget it, the boss and Zhang Mi can handle it; Jun also went — more people would just make it messier.”
…
Hearing their chatter, Xu Mubai finally felt uneasy and mustered courage to check on them at the restroom.
There was a trail of bl00d leading from the table to the restroom door, and staff were cleaning up.
Inside, Gu Che was supporting Xiao Yang, letting him lean on him. “Tilt your head back.”
Xiao Yang obediently tilted his head back, feeling much clearer in his mind, and mumbled an apology, “Sorry, boss, I caused trouble again, but I really didn’t mean to. I wanted to lean on the table, but I missed and fell on you.”
“This was an accident. Don’t be angry. Anger isn’t good for your health, what if you get so angry you…”
“Shut up.” Gu Che snapped at him in a low voice, finally silencing Xiao Yang.
People kept coming and going in the restroom, occasionally glancing over but quickly looking away.
Zhang Rui tore some tissue and rolled it into balls, plugging one of Xiao Yang’s nostrils, only to find the other one was bleeding too. Zhong Jun helped plug that one as well.
With both nostrils blocked, Xiao Yang struggled to breathe, feeling very uncomfortable.
He swayed to stand and looked at the mirror, his face instantly falling, “This is terrible, the boss’s suit was worth tens of thousands! Wah…”
The bl00d had dripped onto the collar of his shirt, glaringly obvious, which broke Xiao Yang’s heart.
Hearing this, Zhong Jun subtly glanced at the boss, sensing something was off but cleverly pretended to know nothing.
Under the current circumstances, there was no way to continue the party — they could only send Xiao Yang home first.
Gu Che glanced outside and caught sight of Xu Mubai. “Xu Mubai, do you know where Xiao Yang lives?”
Xu Mubai nodded quietly, “We’re currently renting an apartment together near the company.”
“Let’s go, I’ll take you home.” Gu Che lifted Xiao Yang and headed out. “Zhong Jun, please tell everyone we left first.”
“Okay.” Zhong Jun helped send them into the elevator, then returned to Wanxing Court.
In the elevator, Xiao Yang’s nose made it hard to breathe. He took out the tissue himself and tilted his head high, leaning on Gu Che’s shoulder.
Zhang Rui looked worried and whispered, “Boss, should we call a car? I can take you home to change.”
The weather was still a bit chilly; catching a cold would be troublesome.
“Does Xu Mubai look like he can support him?” Gu Che frowned and held Xiao Yang firmly, not letting him fall.
Xu Mubai and Zhang Rui exchanged glances, embarrassed to look away.
The boss was right — with his thin arms and legs, even shorter than Xiao Yang, how could he manage? Plus, drunk people were especially heavy.
There was no choice but for all four to go down to the parking garage.
Zhang Rui helped put Xiao Yang in the back seat. Gu Che just circled around to the other side when Xiao Yang’s head suddenly bobbed and fell on his lap.
The tip of his nose smelled strongly of alcohol. Xiao Yang groggily reached out to touch, feeling something off — why was the boss’s suit soaking wet?
Being touched in a strange place, Gu Che’s whole body stiffened. Before he could lift Xiao Yang up, Xiao Yang suddenly scrambled up and began apologizing wildly, “Sorry boss, I got your suit dirty. What should I do? Should I take it off and wash it for you?”
While saying this, he tried to pull off Gu Che’s suit.
Gu Che’s face turned completely dark. He quickly grabbed Xiao Yang’s wandering hands, “Don’t move. Behave yourself.”
During the struggle, Xiao Yang’s nose started bleeding again. Gu Che frowned and helplessly pressed him down on his lap, facing up, “Zhang Rui, get some tissues.”
Zhang Rui handed over tissues. Gu Che replugged Xiao Yang’s bleeding nostrils.
After all this fuss, Gu Che took off his glasses and rubbed the bridge of his nose — he felt more exhausted than after an all-nighter.
Finally, Xiao Yang closed his eyes and fell asleep quietly.
Gu Che leaned against the chair back, exhaled deeply, “Let’s go.”
Xu Mubai sent the address to Zhang Rui, and the car immediately started, heading to their rented apartment.
Forty minutes later, Gu Che finally managed to put Xiao Yang on his own bed. After returning home and taking a shower, it was already midnight.
Lying in bed, his mind uncontrollably wandered.
He wondered if Xiao Yang’s nose was still bleeding.
Whether Xu Mubai had covered him with a blanket.
If he would vomit drunk — he should’ve bought some hangover medicine…
Gu Che’s thoughts all revolved around that troublesome person, causing even his dreams to be about Xiao Yang lying on his lap, the two of them basking in the sun on the grass.
The scene was beautiful and surprisingly filled with a faint sweet atmosphere — but it was Gu Che’s dream, which made it feel particularly strange.
He couldn’t understand why he had this kind of dream or what it meant, only concluding that Xiao Yang was a troublemaker who was especially exhausting.
He rarely had trouble sleeping, but tonight it was different. Meanwhile, the culprit slept soundly until noon.
Saturday morning
The weather was nice, sunlight shining brightly through the window, a bit dazzling.
Xiao Yang blinked and took a while to adjust to the brightness.
After waking up, bits of last night’s memory jumped in his head. Realizing what he had done, he covered his face and groaned in pain.
“Ah… how could I do such a stupid thing!”
Hearing the noise, Xu Mubai knocked on the door, “You’re awake, come drink some porridge.”
Xiao Yang, with a downcast face, changed clothes, washed up, and sat at the dining table with no energy.
Xu Mubai brought him a bowl of porridge — neither too hot nor too cold, just the right temperature.
Seeing Xiao Yang so listless, Xu Mubai kindly comforted, “Don’t worry, it’s not that serious. The boss didn’t seem angry at all. Don’t panic.”
“At worst, I’ll just pay for dry cleaning.”
“Dry cleaning…” Xiao Yang suddenly recalled something and thought seriously.
Last time he spoke badly about the boss and got caught, the boss treated him to coffee and immediately promoted and gave him a vacation… So the boss was actually easy to please?
If that was the case, just buy some gifts and apologize, then everything would be fine.
Once he thought this through, Xiao Yang instantly felt less miserable. He smiled and patted Xu Mubai’s shoulder, “Thanks, bro.”
He finished the porridge in a few mouthfuls and left wearing his changed suit.
The suit he wore when he fell yesterday was soaked with wine and smelled strong of alcohol, making him feel tipsy.
He took the suit to a dry cleaner, then wandered the streets looking for a small gift to apologize to the boss.
He looked here and there unknowingly until he arrived at the flower and bird market in the south, where several uniquely shaped small potted plants caught his attention. Xiao Yang squatted down to observe carefully.
The boss of the store was a young woman who enthusiastically approached, “Sir, what would you like to buy? We have flowers, birds, fish — whatever you want, feel free to look around.”
Following Xiao Yang’s gaze, she introduced some small potted plants, “These are cacti, with different varieties — Black King Kong, Golden Crown… These ones bloom, especially this one — it’s very pretty when it flowers…”
“This one, if you put it on your desk, can purify the air, absorb dust, and the flowers are enjoyable to watch.”
Xiao Yang nodded while listening attentively, his eyes fixed on a particularly round and cute one.
While he was examining it, someone behind recognized him and stopped.
“Xiao Yang?” Zhang Heng was surprised to bump into him here.
The girl holding Zhang Heng’s arm quietly asked, “Who is this?”
“Xiao Yang, my childhood friend. We’ve known each other since we were kids,” Zhang Heng introduced, and Xiao Yang turned around just in time to see them.
The man was handsome, the girl beautiful — quite a striking couple.
Xiao Yang stood and greeted them familiarly, “Hey, long time no see. What brings you here?”
Zhang Heng held up a cage, with a green budgerigar hopping around inside. “I’m buying a parrot for my girlfriend; she likes them.”
“And you? Also buying something?”
When he said this, his tone had a slight hint of showing off, watching Xiao Yang’s reaction closely.
Strangely, this time, he didn’t see the expression he expected on Xiao Yang’s face.
