Episode 8: The Day the Boy Died (From Beruda’s Perspective)
In the relatively safe lower-class labyrinth known as the “Great Ape Forest”. A never-before-seen monster appeared before Beruda and her group as they were gathering medicinal herbs.
“Ah, ah, aaaaaaah!”
It was a hairless humanoid monster that walked unstably on all fours with unnaturally long limbs.
Its skin was eerily white. And only its face was red as if the flesh had been torn off.
Its total height appeared far larger than the trees of the forest.
Its appearance was drastically different from the gentle Magic Apes that inhabited the labyrinth. It emitted a bizarre killing intent.
“—Run now! Do you want to die?!”
At that moment, Phil shouted at Beruda for the first time in a loud voice.
At his feet lay Raika. She had suffered serious injuries from the monster’s blow and was bleeding. And nearby was the backpack Phil had been carrying, thrown to the side.
In this situation, what Beruda should do was obvious.
“But, but—”
“GIIIIIAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!”
Beruda’s trembling words were drowned out by the monster’s roar.
“If you can’t move, you’re just a burden! Hurry up, you idiot!”
While releasing an overwhelming amount of magic power that would undoubtedly hinder him later, Phil shouted at Beruda.
“Uh, ah…!”
—Phil was entirely right.
The only reason the monster hadn’t moved yet was because Phil’s life-draining intimidation was working.
Despite being responsible for protecting everyone, Beruda had been terrified upon seeing the wounded Raika and the horrifying monster. She collapsed in fear. She was unable to even stand.
What she had to do—was to return to town immediately and call for help.
The scrolls of return, enough for everyone, were in the backpack Phil had thrown over.
By using it, all magical manipulation becomes disabled. Which means magicians and priests cannot use magic, and martial artists and swordsmen cannot enhance their bodies with magic power.
In other words, until the return magic activates, the user is left in an extremely vulnerable state.
To make matters worse, if attacked from the outside during activation, the magic completely halts. And the return fails.
Therefore, to escape from this situation, a decoy to hold off the monster in front of them was necessary.
Phil understood the party’s hopeless situation faster than anyone. He chose to take the role of the decoy himself.
“Ugh, ah, uaaaaah…!”
Beruda let out a pathetic voice. It was mixed with screams and sobs. She was crawling on the ground. And with trembling hands, she pulled out the scroll of return.
Then, though hesitating, she used it on herself and Raika.
“Phil! I’ll call for help right away! Until then… hang in there!”
—There’s no way she would make it in time.
Beruda forcibly pushed such thoughts out of her head and shouted desperately at Phil’s back.
“…Sorry, Beruda.”
Just before the return magic activated, Phil said that in a trembling voice.

The next time they met Phil was in the temporary storage chamber of recovered adventurers. It was located in the basement of the Adventurers’ Guild.
Phil was wrapped in bl00d-stained cloth. He looked so pitiful that Beruda and Raika, upon checking the contents, couldn’t bear it and vomited.
“Unfortunately, reviving this child is impossible. If given time, we could repair the body cleanly, but… the internal damage is severe.”
“…Yeah… I know.”
“That’s why, at the very least—I prayed so that he could go to God without hesitation. Please, you two as well, pray for the peace of that child’s soul. That’s all that the living can do.”
“……………”
The male priest in charge of Phil’s treatment told this to the two, who sat hugging their knees in the corner of the room. The priest then left with a sorrowful expression.
“He was amazing. He drew in that monster that even we would struggle with—all by himself… and let you two escape. Honestly… all three of you would’ve died otherwise.”
“…Yeah.”
“But… no matter how skilled, no matter how talented you are, being unlucky like this… can still get you killed easily. That’s what being an adventurer is.”
The female magician said. She was a member of the B-rank party who had gone to defeat the monster and recovered Phil. She spoke with a worn-out face.
“If you want to quit, now’s your chance. Kids like you… this isn’t something you should do by choice.”
“………………”
“Becoming an adventurer was a mistake.”
—Sorry, Beruda.
Those words Phil said at the end might have been an apology for inviting her to become an adventurer.
“Don’t screw with me…”
“…?”
“Phil… wasn’t wrong at all…!”
“Hmph… If you’re planning to continue—then don’t let your comrade’s death be in vain. Do your best.”
And with that final advice, she left.
“It’s my… fault…”
Still not recovered, with painful-looking limbs wrapped in bandages, Raika muttered while holding her head.
“Sorry, Phil… Phil…! Uaah…!”
A level of despair unimaginable from her usual cheerfulness.
Maybe Raika was already beyond saving.
“…Not yet.”
“Eh…?”
Even if that was true—there was still something that must be done, even if alone.
“In the labyrinth… anything can be found, right? Then… maybe there’s a way to bring Phil back somewhere.”
“What… are you saying… Beruda…?”
“I will… find a way to bring Phil back to life.”
Beruda clenched her fist tightly and slammed it against the ground.
“Even if it takes my whole life!”
And so, on that day, she swore upon the pain of her bleeding fist.
