Chapter 10: Marshmallow is So Sweet. I Don’t Like This Flavoring and Coloring…
At 7:30 PM, Gong Shayu (龔沙雨) spotted Tu Si (塗偲) waiting for her conspicuously by the wall at the entrance of East Lake (東湖).
Tu Si was wearing an eye-catching outfit: a canary-yellow bandeau top with flared sleeves paired with vintage denim shorts. A vine tattoo adorned her strikingly white collarbone. The top barely covered half of her belly button, and any slight movement revealed her slender, easily-grasped waist completely. Her vertical belly button was nestled between two faint “vest lines” (馬甲線); upon closer inspection, it wasn’t that the lines weren’t there, but that her skin tone was too fair, making them elusive.
By the time Gong Shayu’s gaze shifted from Tu Si’s straight, long legs to her face, the two were already closer than a safe social distance.
In Z City, even during the day, this attire was likely to cause a chill, let alone in the evening when the temperature had dropped. Was she not afraid of the cold?
Gong Shayu wondered if Tu Si had completely misunderstood her sense of style.
In the evening cherry blossom garden, as day turned to night, the decorative lights were all on, casting a warm yellow and cherry-pink glow that mingled and spread beneath the deep blue sky—half twilight, half lamplight.
“Oh, for heaven’s sake, can something just move this light off my head? It’s going to roast me bald!”
“Oh no, don’t yell, you’re making me nervous…”
“Which son of a b1tch spat on me?”
“Tsk, tsk, look at that guy, he’s so damn perverted.”
Tu Si was speechless.
Hearing so much cursing for the first time, Tu Si quickly grasped the essence—it was just a few words repeated: “his father, his dad, his uncle, his grand-uncle, his second-uncle… and so on.”
The little flowers didn’t have a gender distinction, but once they took human form, they were categorized.
Tu Si casually picked up a long stick and walked over to the most aggressively shouting cherry tree, helping to nudge the string light off its top.
“?”
Gong Shayu stopped and watched from the side of the road. The girl looked slender but had quite a bit of strength. Gong Shayu didn’t understand why Tu Si would suddenly act so strangely and move a decorative light. Was it to get her attention?
The heat source was finally removed, and the cherry tree stretched comfortably. “Thank you, My Lady.”
Tu Si patted the trunk with satisfaction. When she turned and met Gong Shayu’s eyes, she jogged over to her.
“That light was giving it a headache, so I helped it out,” Tu Si explained.
Gong Shayu’s mouth twitched: What kind of bizarre tactic is this?
“Is it comfortable now, then?” Gong Shayu asked expressionlessly.
Tu Si nodded, serious: “Mhm, much more comfortable.”
Gong Shayu: “…”
The peak of the cherry blossom season had passed. After walking through the few agitated cherry trees at the entrance, they arrived at a large artificial lake. Tu Si and Gong Shayu walked along the lake.
After only a few steps, Gong Shayu felt Tu Si’s arm accidentally brush against hers. The temperature transmitted from the back of the girl’s hand made her shiver slightly.
Seeing no obvious reaction from Gong Shayu, Tu Si grew bolder and hooked her pinky finger with Gong Shayu’s. This time, she didn’t actively absorb the other party’s nutrients. Instead, the nutrients from Gong Shayu’s fingers actively drilled into her own pores.
Gong Shayu felt the girl beside her visibly relax. The single interlocking finger turned into two, then three, finally intertwining all five fingers.
This sensation was completely foreign to Gong Shayu. She hadn’t had many friends growing up, let alone anyone with whom she had such intimate physical contact. She didn’t know that a woman’s hand could be so soft, almost boneless, and the faint floral scent on Tu Si was clearly distinguishable even in this cherry blossom garden.
By the time she realized the other party had crossed a boundary, their hands were already intimately linked.
It would look weak to pull away now, Gong Shayu thought.
She felt a powerful sense of incongruity about Tu Si. This incongruity manifested in how the girl would proactively, directly, boldly, and explicitly express her thoughts, yet she possessed a clumsy innocence that couldn’t conceal anything. It was like… a child playing dress-up in an adult’s high heels, pretending to be mature.
Just as Gong Shayu sank into thought, the hand holding hers suddenly paused.
She saw Tu Si staring intently at a marshmallow (棉花糖) stand.
“Sister, look, what is that?” The already bright light in Tu Si’s eyes sparkled. “It looks so delicious.”
Gong Shayu was generally uninterested in overly sweet food and was about to tell her to eat less when the hand holding hers suddenly slipped away.
Tu Si had already run towards the marshmallow stand and quickly lined up behind a few children.
Gong Shayu: “…” She regretted abandoning her jiu-jitsu coach to waste time here.
Gong Shayu’s sleep quality was poor, and the soreness in her back from last night meant she barely slept well. Combined with the full day of meetings, getting acquainted with the company and its people, which she was doing on her first day as the new boss, had drained a lot of her energy.
A breeze blew past, carrying the mixed fragrance of cherry blossoms, grass, and earth. Gong Shayu felt a wave of exhaustion.
Tu Si rushed back to Gong Shayu, holding two enormous balls of marshmallow. The marshmallows even had shapes—one was a pink-eared rabbit, and the other was a pink Hello Kitty.
“Here.” Tu Si handed the pink rabbit to Gong Shayu.
Tu Si took a bite out of the cat’s ear. She seemed to love this food full of artificial sweeteners and colors. In a few quick licks, the top half of Hello Kitty was rolled onto her tongue.
“So sweet,” Tu Si smiled like an idiot. She urged Gong Shayu, “Eat it!”
The scene was incredibly bizarre. If Fang Yu were here, she might describe it as a little white rabbit handing a carrot to the cheetah that was supposed to hunt her, saying, “Go on, eat it!” The cheetah was utterly confused.
Perhaps Tu Si’s expression was too genuine, or maybe it was because Gong Shayu had never been urged to eat something in such a tone. In any case, Gong Shayu actually lowered her head and took a small taste.
The cloying sweetness made her instinctively want to spit it out, while Tu Si’s Hello Kitty was consumed down to just the stick in a few licks.
Gong Shayu frowned. She didn’t like this artificial sweetness. She looked for a nearby trash can, preparing to throw it away.
Tu Si was quick and bit the missing part of the rabbit’s ear. “Sister, if you’re not eating it, give it to me. Don’t waste it!”
Gong Shayu: “…” So casual, is she?
With that, Tu Si took the rabbit marshmallow from her hand. This time, the backs of their hands brushed accidentally. Curiously, Tu Si’s hand was warm, while Gong Shayu’s fingers, despite wearing a knit cardigan, were icy cold.
The evening wind grew stronger, and Tu Si’s personal scent seemed to be overpowering the scent of the cherry blossoms. Gong Shayu felt the drowsiness blown away by the cool wind, but her body felt utterly exhausted.
Gong Shayu was a little annoyed. You can save a cherry tree being roasted by string lights, but you can’t sense that a living person right next to you is getting cold?
Tu Si held the rabbit marshmallow with both hands, leaving Miss Gong San (Gong Shayu) behind. After she seriously finished the last bite of the rabbit marshmallow, she looked up and saw Gong Shayu’s face shifting in expression, gazing down at her.
This expression was currently in Tu Si’s blind spot for interpretation. She opened her “Human User Manual” and flipped to the chapter on facial expressions.
Looking at Gong Shayu again, the Manual’s interpretation came up: “This expression indicates her dissatisfaction with your actions or words.”
Tu Si muttered inwardly that Gong Shayu was difficult to please, while Gong Shayu thought Tu Si was incredibly clueless. With this demeanor, you think you can become a trophy wife like the little madam of the Hao family?!
