Chapter 13: Staying Away from Tu Si — I Didn’t Expect the First Person to Greet Me…
Yalu Port isn’t a true port but an independent island, with its name phonetically derived from the Greek for “mysterious creature.”
Yalu Port has a typical tropical rainforest climate. With its clear blue sea, it’s a paradise for human tourists and a haven for plants.
The long rainy seasons have preserved Yalu Port’s most pristine tropical rainforest. Deep green is everywhere, tall trees reach to the sky, and various epiphytes, like pythons, hang from branches or cling to trunks, creating a self-built aerial kingdom.
Tu Si’s arrival silenced all the rampant vines. The towering trees collectively bowed in salute, as if welcoming a returning monarch.
“Are you Tu Si?” A clear, crisp female voice interrupted the Dodder Flower’s coronation ceremony.
Tu Si nodded, “Yes, I am.”
“Hi, my name is Wang Wei.” The girl nervously swallowed, not daring to look Tu Si in the eye. Her gaze flitted to the hand holding the suitcase. She awkwardly explained, “Minister Wu… asked me to pick you up. I heard the new boss from headquarters is coming for an inspection the day after tomorrow, so they’ve all been quite busy these two days.”
Tu Si smiled and thanked her.
During the several hours on the plane, Tu Si had developed a co-dependent relationship with the Human User Manual.
The manual told her that upon entering a new environment, the first thing to do is establish a persona. A persona is a label you give yourself. You can’t let people think you’re weak and easily bullied, or everyone will take advantage of you. You also can’t let people think you’re arrogant and unreasonable, or you won’t have friends, and without friends, you can’t get anywhere in human society.
Tu Si vaguely understood. The manual advised that given her status as a low-level demon with no spiritual power and an illiterate lack of education, she should keep her mouth shut as much as possible.
In contrast, Tu Si saw kindness on the face of the human who came to pick her up. This was probably what the manual called a “friend.”
So Tu Si gave her a harmless smile.
That one bewitching smile nearly stole Wang Wei’s soul. She plucked up the courage and said, “Tu Si, you are even more beautiful than the celebrities who stay at the hotel.”
Tu Si asked, “What is a celebrity?”
If anyone else had asked that, Wang Wei would have thought they were deliberately insulting her intelligence. But Tu Si’s eyes were too pure and direct. Wang Wei instinctively explained, “A celebrity is someone who shines brightly under the spotlight.”
“Oh,” Tu Si thought, they must be Firefly Spirits.
After a moment’s pause, Tu Si asked, “Do they have money?”
“Of course! They are the biggest earners. If you can become a celebrity, you’ll have countless amounts of money.”
Tu Si understood the first half of that sentence, though the latter half was a bit unclear. Still, she thought it was enough.
“Really? Then I want to be a celebrity, too,” Tu Si said calmly.
At this, Wang Wei felt her distance from Tu Si instantly narrow. She was ordinary-looking, from an average family, with no special skills or talents, yet she also had dreams. She had dreamt of being an actress and a celebrity.
“Then I should tell you all about it! With your looks, you’ll definitely be fine. Celebrities are divided into many types of work. Let’s talk about the common ones. First, actors…”
Once Wang Wei opened her floodgates of conversation, she couldn’t stop, growing more excited as she spoke. Tu Si also listened with great interest.
Soon, the two arrived at the entrance of the ICC Resort. Only then did Tu Si realize what a paradise on earth looked like.
The entire resort was like a fairy-tale castle set in the forest, with architecture blending Asian and European aesthetics, featuring courtyard-style buildings, wooden structures, and large floor-to-ceiling windows.
It retained a sense of vintage beauty while perfectly integrating modern facilities.
Tu Si felt as relaxed as if she had returned home. She took a deep breath, slowly exhaled, and asked, “Do we live here?”
Wang Wei also took a deep breath and let out a long sigh: “We work here.”
Minister Wu had told her that Tu Si was only here for a summer job. In Wang Wei’s mind, Tu Si was already categorized as a second-generation rich kid experiencing life.
Therefore, all her seemingly naive questions were normal.
Five hours later, Tu Si seemed to vaguely understand Wang Wei’s long sigh.
She stretched her back, which had been bent all afternoon, and heard that the new boss would be inspecting the work in two days.
This caused Tu Si, who was due to start her job tomorrow, to enter her work state early: pruning flowers and mowing the grass.
This job was clearly going to be a chore for someone who could hear the plants talk.
“Your Highness, Your Highness, don’t chop me!”
“Aaaahhh… I died so miserably!”
“That was my most sensitive hand!”
“Don’t kill me, please don’t!”
“My head, my head is gone… Your Highness, please help me find my head.”
Tu Si replaced the handsaw with pruning shears, and finally switched to a rounded shovel, casually scraping at the ground.
The other gardeners working nearby couldn’t stand it and began to speak sarcastically: “Well, some young people are useless at work, but they’re great at being picky.”
“Look at her delicate skin. What can she even do?”
“Then she shouldn’t be crowding the head count here. She could be working in the lobby, as a greeter, or a local guide.”
“Looking like her, doing something else would bring in more money, hehehe…”
Several men let out lewd snickers. Tu Si’s hearing was sharper than most, able to catch every rustle of wind, let alone these barbed remarks.
What was annoying was that these men didn’t look like Chinese people, yet how did they all speak Mandarin?
Tu Si sensed a change in her emotions: a bit annoyed, a bit stifled, a bit wronged, and most significantly, a surge of anger about to erupt.
“Manual, I don’t feel good,” Tu Si whispered to the manual.
Manual: “They’re chirping at you, of course you don’t feel good. If it’s really unbearable, you can fight back.”
Tu Si dropped the shovel, tried her voice with a couple of “Ah-ahs,” and then, mimicking the confrontational heroines in short dramas while adding her own modifications, began to verbally attack the men:
“You! Did you do this with your eyes closed? The hedge is trimmed like a dog chewed it, and there are still weed roots left on the lawn edges! A three-year-old with toy scissors could do a neater job than this!”
“You! Thick-skinned and full of tree rings on your face, yet you have zero experience? You don’t even know the basics of watering and fertilizing! Too much water, too little fertilizer—no wonder they’re all withered like this! You’re not doing gardening; you’re committing plant slaughter!”
“You! Yes, you! Why are you looking? I’m talking about you!” Tu Si remembered the “national essence” she learned from the cherry blossom spirit. Pointing at the man who had laughed the loudest while pushing a lawnmower, she cursed in Mandarin: “Are you a complete idiot?!”
“You’ve damaged two Borneo camphor trees and five Bromeliads with that thing… and…”
“Ah, I’m sorry, I’m so sorry…”
When Wang Wei arrived, she was shocked to find the few older men, who usually acted like thugs, collectively bowing and apologizing to Tu Si.
Equally shocked was the unexpectedly early arrival of Gong Shayu. She had not notified anyone and arrived two days early with Fang Yu at ICC.
Her initial motivations were twofold:
First, to experience the resort as a tourist. This magnificent hotel, built on the best scenic spot in Yalu Port and costing over a billion, was suffering record losses every year.
Second, to stay away from Tu Si.
She didn’t expect the first person to greet her would be Tu Si…
