Chapter 21: I Do — Sorry, My Wife Is a Little Shy.
The next day, the two first went to the notary office to complete the prenuptial property notarization.
After practicing last night, Tu Si’s signature was still scrawled, but at least it was recognizably her own scribble.
Truthfully, while the notary was reading the long list of Gong Shayu’s assets, Tu Si struggled not to doze off. It wasn’t that she didn’t care; it was mostly that, aside from the mentions of houses and cars, Tu Si didn’t understand any of the other terms.
However, one thing she understood: these things had nothing to do with her; they belonged only to Gong Shayu.
Tu Si suddenly remembered asking Wang Wei what marriage was. Wang Wei had told her that after marriage, that person belongs to you, and you belong to them.
If that were the case, since Gong Shayu belonged to her, wouldn’t her things belong to her too?
“Miss? Miss?”
The notary’s call pulled Tu Si from her fantasy. “Hmm?”
“Congratulations on finding your life partner! The prenuptial agreement has been notarized. You can now proceed to the marriage registration office. Your bride-to-be has already gone ahead to handle the related paperwork.”
Fortunately, the staff here spoke both Mandarin and English. After checking her ID, they spoke directly to her in Mandarin, making the entire process seamless.
Tu Si looked up, and Gong Shayu’s back had already disappeared through the doorway.
She followed in her direction, down a long corridor paved with fresh flowers. The floral fragrance, combined with the cheerful music, made the Dodder Flower want to sway along.
On the way, Tu Si felt like she was floating on a cloud, a mix of fantasy and joyous happiness. Although her understanding of marriage was still vague, it didn’t hinder her anticipation for the future.
Maybe she wouldn’t have to worry about survival anymore.
Perhaps it was Gong Shayu herself—her domineering nature—that perfectly filled the void of the flower demon’s lack of assertiveness, reducing the panic of feeling out of place in this world.
Or perhaps, it was simply the Dodder Plant’s inherent trait of clinging and parasitism. By viewing Gong Shayu as her host, she had found the same sense of security she once felt with Grandma Banyan.
Unfortunately, she didn’t have that mole on her back.
She would leave her sooner or later.
Tu Si still wanted to call Hu Die and the others, but she didn’t dare, because Bai Ying had instructed her not to contact them first.
Gong Shayu saw Tu Si approach hesitantly and, thinking she might want to back out, raised an eyebrow. “Regretting it?”
Tu Si came to her senses with an “Ah,” nodded, and then hurriedly shook her head.
The staff, seeing Tu Si’s distracted state, dutifully asked her in both Mandarin and English if she was doing this voluntarily.
Tu Si nodded and answered sincerely, “Yes, I do.”
Gong Shayu suddenly said, “Tu Si, I’m giving you one more minute to think.”
Gong Shayu had no fantasies about love or marriage. For her, getting married was simply a means to an end in her fight against the Gong family.
By marrying a woman, she was merely trying to retain her right to the Gong family inheritance.
As for who the woman was, it wasn’t very important.
Gong Shayu had just seen the clumsy woman walk down the corridor, and she clearly noticed the increasing joy and anticipation on her face.
That joy and anticipation were for marriage itself.
As for the subsequent hesitation, it was probably about the person she was marrying.
Gong Shayu thought: If Tu Si had any brains, she wouldn’t refuse her.
After all, the position of “contract bride” required no real effort, yet it would earn her enough money for several years in just one. This was an easy calculation.
In a year, Tu Si would only be nineteen, in the prime of her life. She could go “polish her gold,” find a normal person to date and marry, and her life could continue as normal.
Three seconds later, Tu Si affirmed again, “Yes, I do.”
Gong Shayu put away her rare moment of kindness and smiled at the staff, saying in English, “We can fill out the paperwork now.”
The staff at the marriage registration office had lower Mandarin proficiency than the notary, knowing only short phrases, which Tu Si had to translate in her head to understand.
Therefore, after receiving the documents, Gong Shayu communicated with the staff entirely in English.
From Tu Si’s completely bewildered expression, Gong Shayu concluded she probably only knew two phrases.
One was the one she had just said: Yes, I do.
The other was No.
When the staff handed the documents to Tu Si, they said to Gong Shayu, “She is really beautiful!”
Tu Si sensed they were talking about her. She wanted to know what was said, but she looked around and couldn’t find Fang Yu. She could only ask Gong Shayu, “What did she say?”
Gong Shayu glanced at Tu Si’s face and stated seriously, “She said you are very stupid.”
The Dodder Spirit glared at the staff member, muttering, “Rude.”
Gong Shayu, however, had a slight smile and a warm, reasonable tone toward the staff.
“Thank you.”
Tu Si even understood that phrase.
It was completely different from the attitude she reserved solely for her.
The staff member smiled. “You two are truly a lovely couple! Could your wedding photo be used in our promotional video later?”
“She is a little shy and doesn’t like being in the spotlight.”
Gong Shayu smiled and refused, then turned her gaze to Tu Si, raising an eyebrow and asking in Mandarin, “Right?”
Tu Si obediently replied, “Yes.”
Yes to what? The Dodder Spirit didn’t care. She just knew Gong Shayu wanted her to answer yes.
“Oh my, ladies, I noticed you both a while ago. Please come this way.”
Another staff member approached. This one appeared to be Chinese and spoke Mandarin, which Tu Si found much more welcoming.
“I’ve worked here for a few years. Many Chinese tourists come here on vacation and, when deeply in love, take time to get married. You two must be having a wonderful time here. You look so affectionate.”
Affectionate?
For some reason, hearing that word made Tu Si want to laugh, especially seeing Gong Shayu’s cold expression.
Clearly, she knew that if she laughed out loud now, Boss Gong might be displeased. A Li had told her that to live well, she must keep her sponsor happy.
If laughing would upset her sponsor, Tu Si absolutely could not laugh.
So, she tried her best to think of things that made her sad—like Grandma Banyan, Hu Die and the others, and the host of the bl00d contract who held her life in their hands.
As she pondered these things, her face immediately drooped, and she accidentally bumped into Gong Shayu’s back.
Gong Shayu turned her face and asked in a low voice, “Very wronged?”
Tu Si quickly shook her head, only to see her sponsor’s face look even worse than before.
Should I laugh or not? This money is hard to earn.
“Come, the two newlyweds stand here.” Guided by the staff, Gong Shayu and Tu Si stepped in front of the camera, one after the other.
Once both were seated, Tu Si whispered, “Not wronged. Not wronged at all.”
“Okay, both newlyweds look at the camera and smile. Come on…” The photographer took one shot and realized the atmosphere was wrong.
“Miss, the tall one, smile, and move to the right a little. The one on the right, you don’t need to move.” The photographer looked at the camera, trying to adjust.
Gong Shayu’s expression grew colder. Tu Si saw the newlyweds queuing behind them and noticed they were all calling the woman “wife” (niang).
On a whim, Tu Si said to the photographer, “Sorry, my wife is a little shy.”
Gong Shayu: “…”
She learned fast. However, Gong Shayu was genuinely amused by the title. The photographer clicked the shutter, capturing the moment of her forced smile.
In that single moment, Gong Shayu felt a slight twinge about this marriage for the first time. It felt like she had just acquired the first key to a certain adventure game.
