Chapter 24: Materialist Encounters the Supernatural — “You Gave Me Permission to Be Unrestrained, Wife…”
“The company’s current situation is this: 60 villas, 5 luxury residences, 89 scattered guest rooms. The average occupancy rate this month is less than 20%. I won’t mention the other negative figures first, but the accounting GOP (Gross Operating Profit) over the past year has been an average of -3.75 million Huabi per month…”
As Fang Yu’s voice fell, Mark’s Adam’s apple bobbed unnaturally. The air conditioner in the CEO’s office hummed faintly, and the cold air seemed to form a dense curtain at the back of his neck, blocking the natural flow of air. Following Assistant Fang’s smooth yet sharp presentation, the fine sweat on Mark’s back had already soaked through his shirt.
“The layoffs are not for the sake of increasing revenue and reducing expenditure,” Gong Shayu finally summarized the meeting’s theme directly. “Instead, it is to redistribute the salaries of the dismissed personnel into the performance bonuses of the existing staff.”
Her gaze swept back and forth between Tina and Mark, her tone brooking no argument. “I expect to receive the feasibility plan for the layoffs and the KPI reports for all employees for the past year in my email before work tomorrow.”
Tina and Mark had seen the “three fires of a new official’s assumption of duty” many times, but this was the first time someone had lit the fire so urgently and intensely.
On the way back to their offices, Tina exchanged glances with Mark, signaling him to sit down at a nearby café. Along the way, the two maintained a tacit distance, greeting colleagues as usual, but their hurried steps betrayed their forced composure.
“What does that mean? Is it what I think it means?”
Before Mark even settled into his chair, Tina started her barrage. “Did you see that? What does a twenty-something girl know? The first thing out of her mouth is layoffs!”
“Shh, keep your voice down,” Mark looked around. It was nearly closing time, and seeing few people in the café, he felt relieved enough to chime in, “When I received President Fang’s request for the layoff feasibility report yesterday, I thought reporting to them in person today would change things.”
Tina snorted coldly. “It has changed, alright. It was originally due Friday; now it’s been moved up to tomorrow morning.”
A waiter came over to pour water, and both fell silent. Only after ordering coffee did Mark speak chillingly, “In that case, let’s give the new boss a little splash of cold water.”
…
The Wedding Night
Before coming to Yalu Port, Fang Yu and Gong Shayu had conducted extensive research. However, only by being truly immersed here did they realize their preliminary work was merely the tip of the iceberg.
“Boss Gong,” Fang Yu rubbed her aching shoulder and glanced at the time on the computer screen. “Do you want to go back and rest first? I’ll finish up the rest.”
It’s your wedding night today!!!
Gong Shayu didn’t even lift an eyelid. “We’ll leave together in ten minutes.”
Fang Yu thought to herself, I was right not to remind her. It’s almost 11 PM, and Gong Shayu always prefers round numbers for time.
Gong Shayu returned to the apartment. Tu Si was sound asleep. The reason she concluded she was ‘sound asleep’ was because Miss Gong was nearly blinded by the glaring fluorescent light in the living room and the television volume was at a near-noise level.
Yet, in this noisy, marketplace-like environment, Tu Si was curled up on the sofa, twisted like a pretzel, her body gently rising and falling, her breathing slow and strong.
It wasn’t that Gong Shayu liked to peek, but the girl’s posture was too mesmerizing—her body was twisted like rope at an unnatural angle, and the main thing was that this rope-like person had a messy bundle of grass on her head, with the fake green gem bought on the pedestrian street placed right in the center of the grass.
“…”
Who can take that thing away?
Gong Shayu sighed, feeling an urge to divorce.
After washing up, Miss Gong lay in bed reviewing the day’s work. Somehow, she suddenly thought of the bohemian woman who sold the fake ring.
And her muttered string of French: “You two are a match made in heaven. This woman can help you find the truth you are looking for, and she can help you get everything you desire.”
If Tu Si hadn’t been unable to understand, she truly would have suspected that this was a shill for the “rope” in the living room.
Thinking of Tu Si, she recalled the girl’s bizarre sleeping posture. And what normal person sleeps with a bundle of vines on their head? Including her obsession with the fake ring, it was clear that this girl’s taste was questionable, to say the least.
Gong Shayu suddenly realized she had wasted nearly ten minutes thinking about Tu Si. This was a distraction she had never encountered during her usual work review.
She forced her thoughts back, focusing on the shocking data sheet from today. A company that had every advantage was suffering huge losses year after year. The problem must lie in the personnel.
But… the person on the sofa really does have a great body, especially those white, long legs—110 centimeters for a height of 165. They seem even firmer than the first time I saw her.
Miss Gong impatiently threw off the covers and got up to smoke on the balcony.
On her way to the balcony, Gong Shayu realized she had to pass the sofa again. Miss Gong, without changing her expression, extinguished all lights in the living room—the lamp, the TV, and anything else that emitted light—before crossing the darkened living room toward the balcony.
When the cigarette burned out and she felt her mind was functioning normally again, Gong Shayu snuffed out the butt and turned to go back inside.
…
The Dream
The nights here were usually brightly lit, but tonight, for some reason, the stars and moon seemed to have lost their color.
Gong Shayu groped for the sliding door handle by memory, but her fingertip was accidentally pricked by something sharp.
The entire space was darker than when she had just turned off the lights. The thick darkness was like congealed asphalt, and even the air became viscous. A rich, strange fragrance suddenly surged into her nostrils.
Strangely, she didn’t feel repulsed. However, a faint yellow halo suddenly appeared in the abyssal night, like light, yet like fog.
Gong Shayu distinctly remembered turning off all light sources. Alertly, she took two steps toward the halo. Judging by its location, it was where Tu Si’s head had been moments ago.
Is her phone on? As the thought flashed through her mind, her eyes scanned the sofa—it was empty. The curled figure was gone.
Gong Shayu didn’t take it seriously and continued toward the master bedroom…
“Jie Jie (Sister)?”
Tu Si’s voice suddenly rang out. Gong Shayu turned back, the reprimand on her tongue abruptly swallowed by the sight before her.
Gong Shayu stumbled back half a step, hitting her curled hand hard against the sharp edge of the tall chest of drawers. The impact sent the pothos plant on top crashing down, and instantly stained her already broken skin with bl00d.
Amidst the sound of the ceramic pot shattering, Gong Shayu, an absolute materialist, felt the cognitive framework she had built over two decades begin to crack.
The girl who was curled up and fast asleep on the sofa just ten minutes ago was now being consumed by some kind of golden vascular network.
Those golden vines were emerging like living things from her ear canals, hair tips, back, and arms. The most startling sight was her ring finger—the cheap fake gem ring’s band had burst open, and real vines were sprouting from her flesh.
Emerald-colored vines grew wildly, finally curling into a graceful arc and reaching toward Gong Shayu’s still-bleeding finger.
The moment her fingertip touched the vine, Gong Shayu felt a searing burn.
Tu Si suddenly opened her eyes wide, greedily licking the corners of her lips, moving closer and closer to Gong Shayu until all the vines clung to her body…
“You gave me permission to be unrestrained, Wife,” Tu Si’s voice became increasingly seductive as she moved closer and closer to Gong Shayu.
…
Just before her heart could completely leap out of her chest, Gong Shayu suddenly opened her eyes.
So, it was another dream!
