Chapter 4: I Must Find Her. Gong Shayu’s Main…
Gong Shayu proactively offered to drive Tu Si home, considering it repayment for the two movie tickets.
Tu Si settled into the car. She found this iron machine to be bigger than Hu Die’s, and it carried a unique, clean fragrance, just like the gardenia tree beside the old banyan tree. If she hadn’t gained sentience, and the old banyan tree hadn’t died, she would have been able to twine around that gardenia tree in another year and would have exuded this same scent.
Tu Si inhaled deeply, slightly intoxicated, and said to Gong Shayu, “Sister, can I come to your house for a while?”
Manual: “Ah…? You used that line too early.”
Tu Si replied to it with her divine sense: “Shushu, next time, please don’t prompt me so urgently.”
Gong Shayu’s fingers paused; that direct hit left her a bit speechless. “Where do you live?”
Tu Si looked at Gong Shayu expectantly. After two seconds, seeing that the other party wasn’t inviting her over, she answered honestly: “Haina Mansion.”
She had no idea that when a human asked where she lived, it meant they intended to drive her home.
After the black Bentley started, Gong Shayu spoke again: “You said last time you were eighteen. Some things shouldn’t be said casually to others. Did no one teach you that?”
“Ah?” Tu Si had forgotten she had claimed to be eighteen. As a blade of grass, she should be several hundred years old; as a human, she was only thirty-five days old.
Manual: “Say that she isn’t ‘others.'” This time, the reminder was timely.
“Sister… you are not ‘others.'” Tu Si thought for a moment and added, “And I’ve only ever said it to you.”
Gong Shayu looked at Tu Si’s eyes through the rearview mirror. All she saw was pure blackness—soft, with a hint of eagerness to please and be liked.
“Then do you know who I am?” Gong Shayu changed the question.
Tu Si was slightly overwhelmed that her tone wasn’t as cold. “Of course, I know, Gong Shayu.”
“You work at the Gong Group, in the Investment Department…” Tu Si forgot the professional term and was so anxious the vines in her mind were about to sprout.
Manual: “Change the subject. Ask her what industry has good prospects now, and say you want to learn more about investment knowledge.” The manual pressed down the vines and suggested a more appropriate approach.
Tu Si: “What industry do you think has good prospects now? I want to learn about it.”
Gong Shayu pondered for a moment; something flashed through her mind.
“Oh?” Gong Shayu tapped her finger on the steering wheel. “Then where did you hear about me?”
“I know this question.” Hu Die had prepped her before she left, making Tu Si memorize most common questions. “No one told me. I heard your speech on TV once and was instantly drawn to you, and I asked around to find you.”
Gong Group Investment Department? Speech? Or did she mean roadshow? Gong Shayu recalled the restaurant where they first met.
The restaurant was near the group’s headquarters, and it was normal for Gong employees to eat there during dinner time. The only person from the Investment Department she knew was there was that VC, Tang… Tang something. He was sitting at Table 6, and she was at Table 9. She might have mistaken the table number, but could she have mistaken the gender too?
Either this girl was extremely clever, or she was truly an idiot.
Gong Shayu’s intuition favored the first scenario: the real hunter appears as the prey.
The corner of her lips slightly curved up. It was that feeling of being so speechless she wanted to laugh again.
The sudden silence made Tu Si anxious. She glanced at Gong Shayu fearfully, and when Gong Shayu’s gaze turned towards her, she pretended to look elsewhere.
“I’ll give you one more chance. Tell me the truth!” Gong Shayu’s voice was low but highly intimidating.
“I… I…” Tu Si didn’t know how to answer. She couldn’t reveal her true identity, nor could she let the other party remain suspicious. In a moment of urgency, she stammered in panic, “I… it’s just my sister told me to approach you. She said you have money, and if I make you happy, you’ll give me money to use…”
Hearing this, Gong Shayu let out an almost inaudible laugh. “That’s better.”
If it’s just for money, that’s much easier to deal with!
…
The Spirits’ Mahjong Table
After arriving home, Tu Si recounted her entire conversation with Gong Shayu to Hu Die, but she deliberately concealed the fact that she gained energy from physical contact with her. She didn’t know why; she just instinctively didn’t want to mention it.
“Aiya, you silly child! Being able to talk to you this far is her giving you a chance! Why did you so bluntly say the word ‘money’?” Hu Die analyzed every single word Gong Shayu spoke.
“I disagree,” the Fox Spirit circled Tu Si once, her finger pad caressing Tu Si’s cheek. “Look at this skin, it’s better than ours.”
She exhaled a smoke ring. “Hu Die, you still don’t understand humans. The more power they have, the more they appreciate beautiful appearance and simplicity.”
“A mere company employee, what kind of power does she have?” The Rabbit Spirit put her newly painted nails under the curing lamp and laughed scornfully. “How about I find you a new one? With looks like that, what human can’t she find?”
“Go on, you don’t know anything! This is just for the Wisteria Flower to practice on. Once she gets experience, we’ll place a bigger bet, right?” The Fox Spirit looked at Hu Die.
Among the demon kin, they were demons. Among humans, they were masters of human affairs. The youngest Fox Spirit was a thousand years old, and the Butterfly Spirit was even more exaggerated, having forgotten her true age after crossing countless rivers of history.
The spirits often gathered to play mahjong, shop, and complain. They shared a common value: relying on their superior looks to attach themselves to one human after another, they had long forgotten the original purpose of their cultivation.
“Who cares about becoming an immortal? I’m happier than an immortal right now.” This was the Fox Spirit’s favorite saying.
Tu Si learned a different way of life from them. However, this path didn’t require her to comprehend it.
It was the survival instinct that came naturally to a Wisteria Flower. Theoretically, a few-hundred-year-old blade of grass like her shouldn’t have been able to transform into human form. But ever since she became attached to the old banyan tree, her spiritual power had grown rapidly.
Tu Si hadn’t expected that the old banyan tree, heavy as the sky to her, would die. Yet, she survived, transformed into a human.
Perhaps it was ten years ago, that amber dawn, when the morning light pierced the banyan tree’s wrinkled branches, refining millions of dew drops into an elixir. The Wisteria Flower, not yet sentient, was twining around the ancient tree’s arm, greedily absorbing the spiritual nourishment condensed by the thousand-year-old tree.
When the strange fragrance drilled into her pores, every hair on her vines stood up. That sweet, yet fishy scent gave the Wisteria Flower her first sense of taste. In that instant, the world seemed to turn upside down, and the dormant spiritual energy exploded within her weak veins.
Only now did she realize that wasn’t morning dew; it was the bl00d seeping from the host’s body during the contract formation.
During her tribulation, the Heavenly God had warned her that she must find her destined host, or her roots would wither.
She clearly remembered the crimson bl00d beads gushing like a spring from a black mole:
One drop,
Two drops,
Three drops…
“Aiya, it’s spilling out.” The Fox Spirit screamed dramatically. “Look at this child, she can’t even pour tea. She really needs training.”
I must find her—the owner of the black mole.
Tu Si thought this. There was an urgent and important task waiting for her. This task was not arranged by Hu Die, nor requested by the Fox or Rabbit Spirits. It was simpler than seeking immortality, and it was something she wanted to do and could achieve herself.
She suddenly felt a rush of passion.
Because Tu Si’s gaze was too determined, the Fox Spirit saw it as defiance. “Tsk, that look, absolutely not. Don’t let it show again.”
“A-Li, don’t be so fierce. She’s still a child.” The Rabbit Spirit’s nails were now set, the gradient pale green shimmering with glitter.
Tu Si was immediately attracted by the green color. She cupped the Rabbit Spirit’s paw-like hands, her eyes sparkling. “Sister Bai Ying, I want that too.”
The Fox Spirit nudged Hu Die with her elbow. “Aren’t you going to ask her if she added the WeChat friend today?”
Hu Die curved her lips. “Why don’t you ask directly?”
The Fox Spirit fanned the air in front of her. “I’m afraid I’ll die of anger.”
The Rabbit Spirit mediated: “Tu Si, add that WeChat again, thank her for driving you home, and I’ll do the same manicure for you.”
Tu Si reluctantly let go of the sparkling hands, picked up her phone, and went to add Fang Yu’s WeChat again, the one who had deleted her last time.
