Chapter 51: Poisoning: “Can I have half of Jie-jie’s bed…?”
The iron rhino turned into a villa community. Although the houses here were also detached, they were completely different from the Yalugang resort style, resembling a group of silent guards radiating a coldness that kept people a thousand miles away.
The underground garage door slowly rose. The lighting was brighter than elsewhere. Tu Si squinted her eyes. After they adjusted to the light, she slowly opened them and saw that Gong Shayu’s black iron box was already parked there.
For some reason, the inexplicable sense of unease that the Cuscuta spirit had felt on the way quickly dissipated, blending into the blinding white light, swirling and dancing with the unseen dust, finally vanishing.
The surroundings were perfectly quiet.
“From now on, we’ll live here. You can drive yourself to school. It takes about half an hour,” Gong Shayu’s voice was mellow and melodious, like a violin.
But she doesn’t like the sound of a violin. Tu Si suddenly recalled her saying this during their first meeting.
“Can I have half of Jie-jie’s bed…?” Tu Si asked, her expression perfectly innocent. This highly suggestive request was delivered in the tone of a kindergarten child asking for candy, even her pronunciation carrying a breathy innocence.
The hood of the pink-purple car slowly lowered, cutting off the strong exterior light. The car’s interior darkened. White light streamed in diagonally through the window, hitting the lower half of Gong Shayu’s face and creating an upward curve on her tightly-pressed lips.
This smile. A genuine smile.
Tu Si followed Gong Shayu into the elevator. In fact, this was also Miss Gong’s first time seeing the Yufu villa her father “gifted” her.
It was only one kilometer from the Gong family house where she grew up.
Once on the first floor, Tu Si’s exclamations didn’t stop from the moment she stepped out of the elevator:
“This vase…”
“This chandelier…”
“Tsk, tsk, tsk, the stairs, and the curtains, even the sofa is so beautiful…”
“I love it so much!!!”
But all the exclamations came to an abrupt stop when she saw the living room’s feature wall.
A broken-stringed violin was displayed in a bulletproof glass case, embedded right in the center of the cloud-patterned stone background wall.
The splintered wood where the neck was broken looked hideous. The four drooping strings made Tu Si’s neck feel cold.
She felt like she wasn’t seeing just a few broken strings but her own withered vines.
Gong Shayu’s heels tapped out a crisp rhythm behind her. She walked straight to Tu Si and hugged her from behind.
Tu Si’s body stiffened. This was the first time Gong Shayu had voluntarily embraced her. She looked down at the hands clasped around her waist. The familiar snake bone inexplicably had the shadow of a violin string on it.
Only then did Tu Si realize that the intelligent lighting system installed throughout the villa was silently and slowly making the violin’s shadow crawl across every corner of the living room.
It was as if her spiritual intelligence suddenly awakened. Gong Shayu had many things that both fascinated and perplexed her—like the blooming roses on her back, the snake bone chain on her wrist, and why she disliked the violin yet placed this particular one in the most prominent spot in the house.
“Jie-jie…”
“Shhh!” Gong Shayu interrupted her. Her head gently rested on Tu Si’s shoulder, holding her quietly.
It’s too strange.
For the first time, Tu Si was neither clouded by lust nor attempting to draw nutrients from her host. Instead, she was quietly feeling the breathing of the person behind her, like a human.
But in the next second, the Cuscuta spirit sensed something was wrong. The bl00d in Gong Shayu’s body seemed to be making a mass exodus, frantically crashing against the bl00d vessels as if trying to break free from some restraint.
Tu Si turned around. She met Gong Shayu’s gaze. The brief separation gave both of them a taste of the sweetness of a reunion.
Tu Si initiated a kiss on Gong Shayu’s lips. After the latter let down her guard, Tu Si released her spiritual consciousness, exploring Gong Shayu’s skin, bl00d, and bones…
Whether it was Bai Dandan’s warning or the previous instructions from Hu Die and the others, Tu Si vaguely understood that the rumored Demon Management Bureau was close by.
She didn’t know if merely releasing her spiritual consciousness would attract their attention, but at this moment, she didn’t care.
She discovered that there was something unclean in Gong Shayu’s bl00d!
Gong Shayu only felt that Tu Si’s kiss was incredibly lingering, as if she wanted to continue kissing her until dawn.
“Go take a shower first,” Gong Shayu whispered during a gasp for air.
Tu Si had already unbuttoned a few buttons of her shirt. The Cuscuta gently and fervently caressed every inch of her skin, as if comforting a small flower bud that had just sprouted roots.
“Jie-jie, what did you eat today?” Tu Si suddenly asked an out-of-place question.
Gong Shayu knew Tu Si was a big foodie and could only think of the peculiar habits of a glutton. She replied vaguely: “Aren’t I eating you right now?”
Tu Si was startled. Humans really aren’t picky about what they eat; they even dare to eat me.
“I don’t taste good,” Tu Si said softly, releasing Gong Shayu.
Gong Shayu’s body contained a mixture of sweet clover and fava beans. The combination of these two plants would affect the bl00d of animals.
Doesn’t Gong Shayu know?
It seemed she didn’t. Her meals were prepared by Fang Yu, or now, the person named Tan Ke.
If she suddenly told her that her food was problematic, she would definitely ask how she knew.
But if she didn’t tell her, her bl00d was already very unhappy. Perhaps this time, her discovery was timely enough to prevent a major problem, but what about next time?
Seeing Tu Si suddenly stop, Gong Shayu assumed she was being obedient and willing to shower first. She noncommittally rubbed Tu Si’s head twice, signaling her to go ahead.
The moment Tu Si’s lips left hers, Gong Shayu felt an unprecedented lightness in her body. Many things clicked into place at that instant.
She immediately thought: What a shame for Tu Si. What will she do without me?
This was the first time Gong Shayu had felt fear since learning of her illness, and there was also her mother…
“Tan Ke?” Tu Si suddenly asked: “Didn’t she come back with you today?”
“Hmm?” Gong Shayu was still lost in her emotions and hadn’t clearly heard what Tu Si said.
Tu Si thought for a moment, expressing herself the human way: “Miss Tan Ke, I want to talk to her about something. Can Jie-jie give me her phone number?”
“…?”
An alarm bell suddenly went off in Gong Shayu’s mind: Is she thinking about another woman while kissing me?
“Were you thinking about her just now?” Gong Shayu asked in a deep voice.
Tu Si answered honestly: “For a little while.”
Gong Shayu was enraged. Seeing Tu Si’s innocent gaze only made her angrier. “You want her? Then go find her!”
“Where is she?” Tu Si asked: “I do want to find her.”
Gong Shayu: “…”
My good intentions were wasted on a dog. And I was just worrying about her a second ago. Fine. She’s already found a new one.
…
Twenty minutes later.
Gong Shayu called Tan Ke’s number and asked in a very fierce tone: “Where are you?”
Tan Ke could tell from the tone that something was wrong. She answered meekly: “At home. What are your orders, President Gong?”
“You don’t need to drive Tu Si tomorrow. Tell Fang Yu to do it.” I’m not dead yet! Gong Shayu thought.
“Oh.” Tan Ke was secretly delighted. Such good fortune! Just as she was about to agree, she heard Tu Si’s voice on the phone, not loud, but clear enough for all three of them: “Just let Tan Ke drive me. I want her to drive me.”
Gong Shayu: “…………”
Tan Ke: “…………”
…
Z City in late autumn had completely shed its summer hustle. The entire city was shrouded in a chilling bleakness, which meant that most plants were starting to go dormant.
Tu Si looked at the wind outside the window, thinking that the plants around Gong Shayu might not know the true situation. She absolutely needed to ask Tan Ke herself.
She spoke again: “Jie-jie, please just let Assistant Tan drive me…”
Before Gong Shayu could react, she leaned in again, thinking of helping her clean up some more.
Gong Shayu: You’re really trying for Tan Ke!
…
The next day, Tan Ke came to drive Tu Si after all.
Gong Shayu had wrestled with the decision all night. If I can’t find a suitable bone marrow match, I won’t live long anyway. Since Tu Si is interested in someone, let her go interact.
On the way, Tan Ke thought expressionlessly: President Gong is so seriously ill, yet she still has the nerve to be picky about drivers!
Tu Si was also expressionless. She could now roughly distinguish between humans and spirits. She was sure Tan Ke was human, but there were many types of humans, and she hadn’t yet figured out Tan Ke’s true nature.
Should I proceed according to the human process of getting acquainted?
In the end, Tu Si spoke first: “Miss Tan Ke, hello. My name is Tu Si.”
Tan Ke glanced at her through the rearview mirror: “Did you just time travel? How could I not know your name is Tu Si?”
“Ah, then we are acquainted.”
Tan Ke stopped the car at a red light and turned to Tu Si: “I know you’re still young, but you’re Mrs. Gong now. Can you show a little more concern for President Gong’s health?”
“You’re right.” Tu Si thought she made a good point and nodded in agreement. But the subject quickly shifted: “So, I want to ask you, why are you poisoning Jie-jie?”
Tan Ke was so shocked by the question that she slammed the brakes, narrowly avoiding a rear-end collision. She didn’t even react to the driver behind her opening his window and cursing.
“What are you talking about?” Tan Ke pulled the car over to the side of the road, ready to argue with Tu Si.
“Clover and fava beans.”
Tan Ke was utterly confused, but she felt a sense of foreboding. This was her body’s subconscious reaction to danger, a result of long-term training and real-life combat.
Moreover, for Tan Ke, who had extensive wilderness survival experience, she knew that sweet clover and fava beans were highly toxic to humans. If Gong Shayu were truly poisoned with that, how could she still be alive and walking and jumping?
“What are you saying?”
“When I kissed Jie-jie’s mouth, I smelled a mixture of those two plants on her.”
“…Cough, cough, cough,” Tan Ke forced herself to remain calm: “What nonsense are you spewing?! Every dish President Gong has eaten these past two days was personally packed by me or Fang Yu from the restaurant. Even if there really was a mixture of those two plants, after all this time, you can still smell it? Are you a dog spirit?!”
Tu Si: “…”
Half right.
After her outburst, Tan Ke suddenly realized something. Her eyes widened sharply: “What did you say?”
Tu Si repeated her previous sentence. Based on her months of observation as a human, people often missed the truth because of their own disbelief.
