Chapter 7: Field of Conflict
The Pursuit of Nourishment
The instant Gong Shayu’s gaze fell upon her, Tu Si instinctively opened her eyes, meeting Gong Shayu’s look. For some reason, she read amusement in Gong Shayu’s expression.
Regrettably, she had absorbed no nourishment from Lin Cheng; instead, she had smelled a sickening odor from his bl00d. Tu Si recalled the two previous touches with Gong Shayu—it was like a sweet dew drenching her nearly withered vines, an utterly satisfying feeling. Her whole body was screaming—she had to cling to that woman again.
To outsiders, Tu Si looked like a startled fawn upon seeing Young Master Hao, immediately releasing Lin Cheng’s hand.
The instinct for survival made her forget the Fox Spirit’s instructions and the human rules and etiquette she had been memorizing for a month.
Tu Si abandoned Lin Cheng without hesitation and strode toward Gong Shayu.
She wore a fringed mermaid dress, and every step was like a dance. Her tightly wrapped waist twisted in an incredibly graceful arc, and the material’s fringes shimmered with silver light as she moved.
Was it a “lotus-step” or a “swaying gait”? No appropriate adjective immediately came to mind. She seemed like an angel who had just fallen to earth, yet every strand of her hair exuded seduction.
The onlookers voluntarily cleared a path for Tu Si. Hao Bai was also stunned; he couldn’t remember ever crossing paths with such a mesmerizing beauty.
With every step Tu Si took, the crowd’s breathing softened. Everyone knew the theme of the birthday party tonight: the alliance between the Gong and Hao families. No one dared to cause trouble here for fear of offending both.
But this scene was too provocative. The young men and women couldn’t hold back, pulling out their phones to secretly snap photos of Tu Si and Hao Bai, though no one dared to photograph Gong Shayu.
Tu Si finally stood before Gong Shayu. Those few steps seemed to have exhausted all her spiritual energy. Like a Wisteria Flower long separated from its host, carrying the fragrance of twilight, she pounced into Gong Shayu’s arms.
“Sister…” she murmured, closing her eyes in satisfaction.
“Holy crap!” an unknown voice exclaimed, snapping everyone back to reality.
It also snapped Gong Shayu back.
Facing the person in her arms, she caught a glimpse of Hao Bai’s disgusted expression from the corner of her eye. Gong Shayu’s lips curved slightly. She tightened her hold on the person in her embrace and patted Tu Si’s back in a comforting manner.
“What the heck! Is this…?”
“I’ve never seen Third Miss Gong make that expression…”
“A best friend, maybe. Looks like a best friend.”
“I think so. I wonder which daughter this white-clad goddess is? To be a best friend with Miss Gong, she must be someone important.”
“I’ve never seen her before. She was just with Young Master Lin…”
According to the script, this was when the actress hired by Fang Yu should have made her entrance. The young actress, her mind full of admiration, watched Tu Si. This is the most basic professional quality of an actress, she thought.
After taking the job yesterday, she had checked whose domain this party was tonight and had been excited all night. Learning it was Third Miss Gong made her even more flustered. This woman had been the darling of domestic finance channels and fashion bloggers since returning home last year, with her papers even appearing in professional legal journals.
The young actress struggled to find her footing. She didn’t even have the courage to look Gong Shayu directly in the eye. How was she supposed to play a jealous woman making a scene here?
However, Tu Si’s appearance reminded her that masters never complain about their environment.
The other girl lacked any acting skills from the tips of her hair to her toes, yet her innocent, wronged eyes and silent forbearance were simply perfect.
Wait, she was just holding another man’s hand a second ago!
“Young Master Lin, I apologize. The child is ignorant. She heard I came for a blind date and is sulking.” Gong Shayu emphasized the words “blind date” so the onlookers could hear.
The country had just passed the law allowing same-s3x marriage. Now, the famously reclusive Third Miss Gong suddenly had a girlfriend appear in public?!
These words were like throwing another depth charge into the already turbulent lake, forcing everyone’s attention onto Hao Bai.
Including Gong Shayu.
“Shall we continue, Young Master Hao?” Gong Shayu asked casually, as if this whole scene was inconsequential.
Hao Bai scoffed. When had he ever endured such humiliation?
“Miss Gong, an explanation?”
Everyone’s gaze returned to Gong Shayu. The young actress nervously watched the time on her phone; she was due on stage in one second.
Just as she took a step with her left leg, a strong hand pressed onto her right shoulder, making her completely unable to move.
The actress looked back and met the frosty gaze of Assistant Fang. Fang Yu signaled with her eyes that she shouldn’t move, and the actress obediently retreated half a step.
Gong Shayu, having recovered from the sudden ambush, only felt the soft, boneless sensation of the person in her arms. This was the second time she had felt this softness. The warm breath on her neck sent dense, unfamiliar jolts of current through her body. Gong Shayu lowered her head, intending to signal to Tu Si to mind the setting.
But the girl, completely oblivious, looked up at her with an incredibly innocent expression, exactly like the spirits in stories who tempt honest scholars.
Gong Shayu couldn’t help but recall the movie they watched together. Unfortunately, Gong Shayu was no honest scholar. She wouldn’t let anything slip out of her control, including her own body.
Tu Si, reveling in the “nourishment absorption,” was abruptly pushed away by Third Miss Gong.
She steadied herself. The dizziness had passed, and she felt much lighter.
Tu Si thought that if it weren’t for the unpleasant voice next to her, Gong Shayu probably wouldn’t have rejected her. She could feel that the cells in the other woman’s body were happy; in other words, her body was more honest than her actions.
Gong Shayu didn’t want to explain. The explanation was simple: I’m clearly not interested in you, but her upbringing wouldn’t allow her to say it outright.
Hao Bai, following the human instinct to pick on the weak, directed his scrutinizing gaze at Tu Si.
Tu Si, bursting with unvented frustration, suddenly remembered a scene from TV last night: a group of people were shouting at the female lead, who made a single gesture that silenced everyone.
Hao Bai: “Where did this…”
Tu Si looked at him innocently, tilted her head, and made a throat-slitting gesture.
Gong Shayu: “…”
Hao Bai: “!”
The Crowd: “!!!”
Too brazen. But seeing Gong Shayu stand beside her protectively, no one dared to speak up.
Tu Si’s expression was utterly harmless, even slightly bewildered, yet Hao Bai felt a chill down his spine, raising his hackles.
Gong Shayu was someone you dared not offend, and this woman who had suddenly appeared was inexplicably terrifying. Hao Bai kicked Lin Cheng’s shin and loudly demanded, “Who is this wench?!”
Tu Si used the opportunity to burrow back into Gong Shayu’s arms. Why can I only absorb nourishment through physical contact with her?
The Wisteria Flower used the angle to examine Gong Shayu’s back. Unfortunately, the fiery red gown didn’t expose her entire back. Coupled with Gong Shayu’s long, wavy hair, where she expected a mole, there was only the faint outline of a blooming red rose design.
Tu Si felt a little disappointed. No black mole meant she had to keep searching.
Lin Cheng had goosebumps. He genuinely hadn’t thought this was Gong Shayu’s woman, who had deliberately crashed their alliance meeting and flirted with him as an aside. He endured the kick and quickly extended his other leg to Hao Bai, inviting him to kick again.
Just then, the Fox Spirit (A-Li), who had been missing for half an hour, appeared.
Seeing the situation, she almost covered her face and fled again. Alas, after years of poor cultivation, her limited spiritual power wasn’t enough for a silent retreat.
“Sister A-Li, over here!” Tu Si raised her hand to greet her.
Everyone’s attention shifted to the Fox Spirit. Someone recognized her—Hao Bai’s future stepmother!!!
