- Chapter 13 - If One Day, I’m Not With You
The morning air was a little chilly. Xinxin rubbed her arms. Last night, Wei Zhi had held onto her tightly, so she could only lean against the bed and nap for a while. She even woke up a few times from the cold.
Her nose felt itchy. She couldn’t help but sneeze. Oh no—was she catching a cold?
Wei Zhi saw Xinxin like this and immediately understood—it must’ve been because she held her all night, making her catch a chill. If she got sick because of that… Just thinking about it made her heart ache.
“Are you okay?” Wei Zhi asked with concern.
“I’m fine. I’m tough, nothing can hurt me,” Xinxin said lightly, touching her nose.
But Wei Zhi still looked worried. She carefully checked her face. She really didn’t seem too bad, so she finally relaxed.
“You should drink some cold medicine later, just in case,” she reminded her.
“Okay, I’ll listen to you.” She suddenly remembered something. “Oh right, the doctor said you can eat some liquid food now. What do you want to eat?”
“Anything’s fine.” Wei Zhi smiled. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Xinxin rubbing her stomach and remembered how much of a foodie she was. She asked gently, “Are you hungry?”
“A little. So, what do you want to eat?” Xinxin asked seriously.
Wei Zhi couldn’t win against her and smiled, shaking her head. She picked up her phone and opened the food delivery app. “How about crab soup dumplings from the shop near school? Or steamed dumplings, beef pies, sweet potato cakes, pumpkin porridge, chicken and mushroom congee…”
“Stop, stop, do you want me to explode from eating?!” Xinxin quickly cut her off.
She ordered a bowl of plain congee for herself and paid.
“Just wait a bit, I paid extra for express delivery. It’ll come soon.”
The delivery guy was fast. In just over ten minutes, the food arrived. Xinxin’s eyes lit up. She was just about to dig in when she saw Wei Zhi only ordered a plain congee for herself. She suddenly felt a little embarrassed.
Wei Zhi saw her hesitating and chuckled. She pretended to be in trouble. “Oh no, I accidentally ordered too much. I can’t eat a lot right now, so I’ll have to count on you.” She took her own congee and gave her a hopeful look.
Xinxin didn’t act polite anymore. “Okay, I’ll help you out then!”
She grabbed her chopsticks, picked up a crab dumpling, and put it straight into her mouth. So tasty! The steamed dumplings were delicious too. The chicken congee smelled amazing.
Wei Zhi tasted her plain congee and looked at her. She was eating happily, like a little greedy kitten—eyes curved, cheeks puffed out, lips rosy. Bite after bite, she chewed contently. She noticed her staring, looked up, and frowned a bit. “Why are you looking at me? Eat your congee.”
Wei Zhi felt warm inside. He followed her words and took a few more bites. She ended up finishing half a bowl. Normally, she ate very little. If she didn’t remember the doctor’s advice to eat small portions, she might’ve finished the whole thing.
Wei Zhi stayed in the hospital for two days before being discharged. Xinxin kept feeling like she had forgotten something but couldn’t figure out what—until they returned to the dorm and she saw her suitcase in the corner.
Right! Ever since Wei Zhi’s accident, she hadn’t contacted Qin Rui. Thinking back to Lu Chen’s sour face that night, she guessed their talk hadn’t gone well. Was Qin Rui mad at her?
The more she thought, the more nervous she became. She hadn’t messaged him for so long—of course he was mad. She grabbed her phone and sent a test message:
“Qin Rui?”
She waited, but got no reply. Just as she was getting anxious, the phone rang. Seeing his name, Xinxin tensed up. She saw Wei Zhi wasn’t paying attention and quickly stepped out to the stairwell with her phone.
“Hello, Qin Rui,” Xinxin said, lacking confidence.
“You finally remembered to call me?” His voice was calm—too calm. But Xinxin could feel the storm hiding behind it.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t do it on purpose.” Her voice softened like a child asking for forgiveness.
“Don’t use that tone. What happened?” His voice softened too, but he didn’t let the issue go.
“My roommate got sick suddenly, so I took her to the hospital. I was so worried that I… forgot about you.” The word ‘forgot’ was so quiet, it was almost a whisper.
But Qin Rui had sharp ears. He clenched his teeth.
“You forgot about me?”
Xinxin panicked. “No, no! I told Lu Chen to tell you I couldn’t make it!” The moment she said it, she realized her mistake—why bring Lu Chen up?
She stammered, not knowing how to explain. Qin Rui stayed silent for a while, then asked:
“Lu Chen went to Jiang University too?”
Xinxin didn’t know what he was thinking, but she answered honestly. “Yeah, he said he did badly on the college exam, so he came here.”
Qin Rui: “…”
Failed the college exam? Only Xinxin would believe that.
He was quiet again, then said,
“It’s good he’s there. With him taking care of you, I feel more at ease.”
“You’re not mad anymore?” Xinxin asked carefully.
“When have you ever seen me mad at you?” he replied with a light laugh.
Hearing him laugh, Xinxin finally relaxed.
“It’s okay. The National Day break is coming soon. There’s a seven-day holiday. I’ll buy my ticket early and go visit you.”
“I’ll be working during the holiday. I won’t have time to keep you company. Maybe you shouldn’t come—it’d be tiring for you.”
“I just want to see you. It’s not tiring.” Her voice was soft and low. She really missed Qin Rui. Since he moved to the northern city, they hadn’t seen each other.
“Xinxin, I’m sorry. The café is too busy. I won’t be able to take care of you if you come,” Qin Rui said gently.
“Okay…” she replied, a little disappointed.
There was another pause. Then he asked,
“Xinxin, if one day I’m not with you anymore, will you be mad at me?”
His voice was low and serious. Xinxin’s heart skipped a beat. She felt uneasy.
“What do you mean, not with me? We’re not even together right now, and we’re fine, aren’t we?”
“It’s nothing. I just worry that I can’t take care of you properly… that you’ll be angry.”
“Of course not. But if one day you ignore me, I’ll ignore you too,” Xinxin pouted.
That answer hurt Qin Rui deeply.
“Ignore me forever?”
Yeah… maybe that would be best. With Lu Chen by her side, she’d be okay again soon.
“Xinxin, I need to get back to work. Talk later.”
“Okay, bye.”
In a café in the northern city, it was a nice day—last day of the Mid-Autumn holiday. The shop was full of people. In the kitchen’s break room, Qin Rui sat alone on a chair, staring at the phone call screen that had already ended. He didn’t speak. The screen went dark, and his heart felt like something had been carved out of it. The pain spread from his chest to his whole body. He let out a bitter smile, covered his eyes with his hand, and let the tears fall.
Back at the dorm, Xinxin returned with a heavy heart. Wei Zhi noticed and asked gently,
“What’s wrong? Are you upset?”
“Not really… I just talked to Qin Rui. He sounded a little strange.” Xinxin looked confused.
“Strange how?” Wei Zhi asked.
“I can’t explain. He asked me, ‘If one day I’m not by your side, will you be mad?’”
Wei Zhi frowned. Her lips moved, as if he wanted to say something, but held back. Finally, she said,
“So, would you be mad?”
“Huh? I guess not. We’re in a long-distance relationship anyway. We can’t be with each other all the time.”
She didn’t expect Wei Zhi to ask her that. It left her a bit stunned.
“Then don’t think too much. Let’s worry about the future when it comes,” Wei Zhi said softly. Her eyes were full of care.
This silly girl… she’ll be heartbroken one day, and she doesn’t even know it.
