- Chapter 16 - Did She Just Get Cheated On?
Yu Xinxin was still spacing out, thinking about what had happened at lunch, when she suddenly heard Zhou Tong’s voice and snapped back to reality.
“What happened? What do you mean I’m famous now?”
“Check the school forum! Someone recorded the confession at noon and uploaded the video. That peacock got roasted in the comments.”
Yu Xinxin quickly pulled out her phone, logged into the school forum, and skimmed through the pinned post. She let out a sigh of relief.
“Good thing they blurred my face. Otherwise, I’d really be famous now.”
“The important part is in the comments. Read those. That peacock isn’t a good person,” Zhou Tong reminded her.
Wei Zhi had also just finished reading the post. She spoke calmly.
“He wasn’t a decent guy to begin with.”
“So you knew? No wonder you didn’t even look at him,” Zhou Tong said, suddenly realizing.
Wei Zhi shot her a cold glance, clearly displeased with the nickname ‘Little Zhi Zhi.’ But Zhou Tong was already used to the glare and just rubbed her arms and continued gossiping.
“How did you figure out he was bad? We’ve never seen him before.”
Wei Zhi didn’t bother explaining. She picked up a book and kept reading.
Yu Xinxin, now curious, asked, “Yeah, how did you know? I mean, confessing in public is a bit over the top, but that doesn’t mean he has a bad personality.”
Wei Zhi put her book down and spoke calmly. “The public confession was one reason. But do you remember who started the cheering first?”
Yu Xinxin and Zhou Tong thought about it for a moment but couldn’t remember.
“I didn’t notice,” Zhou Tong said.
“Me neither,” said Yu Xinxin.
Wei Zhi glanced at both of them and explained, “The first person who started shouting was standing next to Pan Yue. Before we even got close, I saw him outside the crowd, looking around like he was searching for someone. Otherwise, how would people suddenly make a path for us the moment we walked over?”
Hearing that, Yu Xinxin started to recall something. She did remember a guy outside the crowd looking around while everyone else was facing inward, watching the drama. She had thought it was odd at the time. Later, that same guy moved into the crowd, and a path opened up. She vaguely remembered seeing him stand next to Pan Yue.
Seeing her realization, Wei Zhi continued, “And both times the crowd started cheering, it was that guy leading it. He wasn’t alone—there were others echoing him. They were trying to build the atmosphere and put pressure on me.”
“No way, that guy’s so sneaky! You really can’t judge a book by its cover. Good thing you saw through him, Little Zhi Zhi.” …Is that how you use the phrase ‘saw through someone’s tricks’? Well, close enough.
“Is that why you acted the way you did toward him?”
“That’s one reason—but not the only one.”
Yu Xinxin and Zhou Tong looked at her curiously. Wei Zhi continued, “Usually with these public confessions, even without anyone leading, the crowd will cheer on their own and try to get the girl to say yes. As a guy, Pan Yue would know that. So if he still hired people to stir things up, that means he didn’t expect the crowd to cheer naturally. And why wouldn’t they? Probably because of his bad reputation. To be safe, he planted people to hype it up.”
“So that’s how you figured out his character?”
“Exactly.”
Zhou Tong looked at her with admiration. “Little Zhi Zhi, you’re amazing. You should’ve been a detective.”
Hearing that nickname again, Wei Zhi’s face twitched. She shot a look at Zhou Tong, who was now immune to her glares and kept gossiping happily. “Then why did you give the flowers to Xinxin? Was it to humiliate that peacock?”
“Xinxin said she liked them, so I took them. They were given to me anyway.” Wei Zhi spoke as if it was only natural.
Zhou Tong burst into laughter.
“Classic Little Zhi Zhi, hahaha…”
“So in the end, Pan Yue getting roasted on the forum is his own fault,” Yu Xinxin said as she scrolled through the comments, feeling a bit indignant.
“He deserved it. If we see him again, we should avoid him. It’s everyone’s duty to stay away from toxic people.”
That evening, Han Yin returned from class and asked as soon as she entered the dorm, “Did you guys see the post on the school forum?”
“Yep!” Zhou Tong replied right away and repeated everything they had talked about earlier to Han Yin. After listening, Han Yin looked at Wei Zhi with admiration in her eyes. Wei Zhi just went on with whatever she was doing, totally unconcerned.
“But Wei Zhi, don’t mess with him anymore,” Han Yin warned. “I heard his family has connections with the school leaders. If he tries to get revenge, it could be trouble.”
“If he dares mess with me, I’ll have him expelled tomorrow,” Wei Zhi said lightly, like it was no big deal.
Han Yin was stunned and said nothing more. It looked like even if trouble came, Wei Zhi could handle it on her own.
The post disappeared from the forum the next day without a trace, like it had never existed. But gossip doesn’t last long—after two days, people stopped talking about it. Everyone gets distracted easily, and sure enough, the forum exploded again over something new.
Coincidentally, one of the people involved in this new gossip was the same peacock from before. This time, he was flirting with a freshman from the oil painting department. After the last post, he’d become quite infamous among the new students. Normally, the girls would avoid someone like him—but somehow, he won this new girl over. They were now openly showing off their relationship.
But all of this had nothing to do with the girls in Dorm 311.
Yu Xinxin was busy packing. The National Day holiday was starting tomorrow. She had made all the preparations to avoid any surprises. For the past few days, she had been watching over Wei Zhi’s meals carefully—no cold, spicy, salty, sour, or hot food allowed. Wei Zhi didn’t mind being fussed over. After being alone for so long, it actually felt nice to have a little bunny constantly worried and taking care of her.
After double-checking her luggage and reminding Wei Zhi once more to eat carefully, Yu Xinxin went to bed. Wei Zhi looked at the sleeping girl beside her, sighed softly, and closed her eyes.
It was already afternoon when Yu Xinxin stepped out of the high-speed train station. This was her first time in North City, a bustling international metropolis. She looked at the time—Qin Rui should be heading to work at the café in about half an hour. If she moved quickly, she could surprise him before he left.
She held back her excitement and hailed a taxi. The driver, noticing her cheerful face, couldn’t help chatting.
“You look really happy, young lady. Where are you headed?” he asked in a thick North City accent.
“Nothing special, just going to see my boyfriend,” she answered.
“Oh? Then your boyfriend must be a top student at BeiQing, huh?”
“Yeah, he’s really smart,” she said proudly.
“Sit tight, I’ll take a shortcut and get you to your sweetheart faster.”
The taxi weaved through traffic and took a less crowded road. When they arrived, it was just after 4 p.m. Yu Xinxin thanked the driver and pulled her suitcase into the university campus.
After asking several people for directions, she finally found Qin Rui’s dorm building.
Standing in front of the boys’ dorm, Yu Xinxin felt a rush of excitement. They hadn’t seen each other in two months. She wondered if he had lost weight, or if he was taking care of himself properly.
Just as she was about to call his phone, a tall, slim boy walked out of the dorm. It was Qin Rui—she recognized him instantly. She was just about to greet him when someone else ran up ahead of her.
It was a light, quick figure—a girl. She laughed brightly and jumped into Qin Rui’s arms. His body stiffened at first, but in the end, he didn’t push her away. The girl stayed in his arms, then looked up and kissed him on the cheek.
“We’ll watch a movie first, then have dinner, okay?” she said, dragging the last word like a playful whine.
Yu Xinxin froze. It was like a lightning strike on a clear day. That boy was definitely Qin Rui. She didn’t know the girl. Qin Rui was supposed to be heading to the café, wasn’t he? Then who was this girl? Was she his girlfriend? Then who was she?
Her chest hurt—tight and uncomfortable, like someone was squeezing her heart. Her eyes stung. She wasn’t sure how long she stood there. Eventually, the two walked down the steps—straight toward her.
When Qin Rui saw her, his face changed instantly. Shock, panic, guilt, pain—all flashed across his face. Then, he forced a smile.
“Xinxin? What are you doing here? Why didn’t you tell me ahead of time? Let me introduce you—this is my… girlfriend, Qingqing. Qingqing, this is Yu Xinxin. I’ve always thought of her as a little sister.”
The girl froze, then quickly smiled and reached out a hand. “Nice to meet you. Qin Rui talks about you a lot.”
Yu Xinxin didn’t really hear what they said. That one sentence—’I’ve always thought of her as a little sister’—kept echoing in her head. She didn’t know what she said or how she left. She just wanted to run—run far, far away.
Qin Rui wanted to chase after her, but the girl grabbed his arm and shouted, “Think carefully before you go after her!”
She didn’t know how long she ran. She just kept going, avoiding crowds until she reached a quiet spot. Then she broke down and cried—loud and long.
When the tears finally stopped, she sat there staring at a stone, her mind blank.
“…Xinxin…”
She recognized that voice. She knew it better than any other.
