- Chapter 19 - Starting Today, I’m Your Girlfriend
Wei Zhi reluctantly sat back down, her eyes still fixed on Yu Xinxin’s shocked expression with great interest. She had wanted to deepen the kiss, but what she’d already done was bold enough. She didn’t want to scare her away just yet.
Yu Xinxin still hadn’t snapped out of it. What just happened? Did someone kiss her? Was it… Wei Zhi? No way. That must’ve been a hallucination. It had to be. That was her first kiss! No, definitely a hallucination…
She sneaked a glance at Wei Zhi, who was still sitting there, smiling in that strange, teasing way. Her normally cold eyes were full of amusement, and her lips curled up slightly as she stared right at her. No, no, that kiss must’ve been a dream. She’s just sitting there like nothing happened.
Yu Xinxin looked down at her noodles, her face burning red. She didn’t dare raise her head again.
Wei Zhi rested her chin on her hand, leaning on the table, and let out a small laugh. It seemed like the girl had really been scared. She wasn’t even sure what had come over her earlier. Just seeing that pain in Yu Xinxin’s eyes made her restless. She wanted to comfort her, but somehow ended up turning into the big bad wolf luring in a little white bunny. And now that the bunny was scared stiff, she wasn’t satisfied anymore. She had already kissed her, yet all she did was eat noodles without even sparing her a glance. Was she that unappealing?
“Why aren’t you saying anything? Don’t tell me you’re going back on your word?” Wei Zhi said softly, her voice laced with sorrow.
Yu Xinxin’s scalp tingled. She put her chopsticks down, too tense to keep eating.
“What do you mean ‘going back on my word’? You’re the one who kissed me! I didn’t agree to anything!” She finally realized there was something wrong with their conversation. Had she… accidentally agreed just now?
“You clearly said you didn’t mind,” Wei Zhi replied calmly.
“That was… I mean… I didn’t agree to anything!” Yu Xinxin was on the verge of tears. This was unfair! She wasn’t even into girls! Sure, Wei Zhi was beautiful, but she was still a woman!
“I don’t care. We kissed, and you agreed. So from now on, I’m your girlfriend.” Wei Zhi’s words sounded a bit cheeky, but her tone was gentle. Her eyes were so tender they could melt someone’s heart. Seeing Yu Xinxin look like she was about to cry, she put on a sad face and added, “Unless… you’re planning to dump me right after agreeing?”
Looking at Wei Zhi’s dramatic performance, Yu Xinxin couldn’t see any trace of her usual cool and aloof self. Fake. She’s totally faking it, she thought.
“I don’t like girls,” Yu Xinxin said firmly.
“Feelings can be developed,” Wei Zhi replied slowly.
“They can’t,” Yu Xinxin said, completely serious.
“Didn’t you just say I’m pretty? And it’s easy to fall for someone good-looking,” Wei Zhi shamelessly argued. Chasing a girlfriend meant letting go of your pride.
“I…” Yu Xinxin was breathing hard from anger and embarrassment. How had she not seen Wei Zhi’s true colors before? All that cold goddess stuff was a lie—she was a total scoundrel!
“You really don’t like me?” Wei Zhi asked again. Her dark eyes were misty, sadness overflowing, making it hard to watch.
Yu Xinxin felt her heart soften. Now she felt a little guilty too. Wasn’t she acting just like those heartless guys? Maybe she had misunderstood and agreed too quickly. Backing out now really did seem wrong.
Wei Zhi peeked at her and saw her hesitation. She kept going. “I didn’t expect you to say yes anyway. I guess I was just being foolish. After all, it’s hard for most people to accept a same-s3x relationship.” She paused, then pinched her thigh hard, eyes turning red. She choked out, “If you really can’t accept it, then just pretend I never said anything.”
Yu Xinxin wanted to slap herself. She had just been dumped by a jerk, and now she was the one acting heartless. That made her the jerk, didn’t it? And it looked like Wei Zhi had a hard time coming out too. Had she been too harsh?
Choosing her words carefully, she tried to speak gently. “Listen, it’s not that I don’t like you. I mean, you’re really pretty…”
“So you do like me?” Wei Zhi asked, her eyes shining with hope like she’d found her last chance to hold on. She was already beautiful, but now, with tears in her eyes and a fragile look, she was heartbreakingly lovely.
Yu Xinxin couldn’t bring herself to say anything more. Wei Zhi looked too good—even with tears. If she said anything cruel now, not only would Wei Zhi cry, she might cry too.
“I guess I like you… as a friend,” Yu Xinxin said with difficulty.
“Then you’re not going back on your word?” Wei Zhi quickly asked, a sly glint in her eye.
“I think… love should be mutual. I just got dumped, and jumping into a new relationship like this wouldn’t be fair to you. Maybe we should…”
Before she could finish, Wei Zhi cut in. “Maybe you should agree to be my girlfriend first, and we’ll build our feelings over time?”
Yu Xinxin looked at her expectant face and couldn’t bear to say no. Still, something felt off. “And what if we don’t end up having feelings?”
“Then we’ll pretend today never happened, and go back to being friends. How’s that?” Wei Zhi offered, watching her carefully.
Yu Xinxin frowned, thinking. That didn’t sound so bad. Worst case, they could break up later with some excuse. Close friendships between girls weren’t unusual. And Wei Zhi was so pretty—she probably had plenty of guys chasing her. When that happened, Yu Xinxin could just step aside.
“Okay,” she said. But she still felt like something wasn’t right.
“So you’re agreeing?”
“Mhm.”
“Then we’re officially a couple starting today,” Wei Zhi said with a flirtatious smile and a victorious gleam in her eyes.
Yu Xinxin’s heart skipped a beat. Why does this feel like a bad idea…?
Wei Zhi smiled brightly. Very satisfied. Her new girlfriend was a little clueless, but that was fine. She’d just have to keep an eye on her so no one stole her away.
After clearing the table, Wei Zhi felt great. Yu Xinxin was still sitting on the couch, staring off into space, looking conflicted—but at least she wasn’t sad anymore. It seemed like she had gotten over her heartbreak pretty quickly. That was good.
“I’m going to take a shower,” Wei Zhi said gently.
“Oh.” Yu Xinxin was a little distracted.
“You… want to join me?” Wei Zhi teased.
“Sure,” Yu Xinxin answered without thinking, then quickly corrected herself, “Wait, no! You go ahead.”
“Are you sure?” Wei Zhi asked, disappointed, pouting a little. “I won’t do anything.”
Yu Xinxin scooted further away, forcing a smile. “Really, it’s fine. I prefer to shower alone.”
What the hell? Yu Xinxin complained silently. Has Wei Zhi completely broken character? She was never this warm before. Was she faking all along? Ugh, women really are scary. Cue internal screaming…
Wei Zhi didn’t push it. She turned and went to the bathroom. If she teased her any more, the girl might actually run away.
Yu Xinxin felt a mess inside. How had she ended up agreeing to this? What was going on? Did Wei Zhi really like her? She hadn’t done anything that could be misunderstood… had she? And when did Wei Zhi get so flirty? Was that cool goddess just a lie? Was she really about to… fall for a girl?
Yu Xinxin grabbed her hair in frustration. I must be losing my mind…
Wei Zhi showered quickly. She didn’t want Yu Xinxin to overthink things. The girl had cried so hard earlier—she might spiral again.
Hearing the bathroom door open, Yu Xinxin turned. Wei Zhi walked out with steam still clinging to her, her wet hair sticking to her neck, cheeks slightly flushed from the heat. She looked at Yu Xinxin and winked with a soft smile.
Yu Xinxin’s heart skipped again. Too pretty. Way too pretty. She swallowed hard and repeated to herself: I’m straight. I’m straight. I’m straight…
