- Chapter 34: As Long as You’re Shameless, the Wife is Still...
“I…” Yu Xin Xin’s heart was tangled. She understood the weight behind Wei Zhi’s words. Over the past few days, she had sensed Wei Zhi’s devotion—how she had placed her in the softest part of her heart to cherish. But right now, she couldn’t make any promises.
The light in her eyes faded. She knew Yu Xin Xin wouldn’t give her an answer—she still had to walk this cold, lonely path alone.
“I’ll always be with you,” Wei Zhi’s eyes brightened as Yu Xin Xin continued, “Whenever you need me, I’ll be there. I can eat with you, go shopping with you, travel with you…” We’ll be the best of friends.
Wei Zhi closed her eyes, hiding the sorrow within them while the pain in her heart roamed freely. She understood Yu Xin Xin’s meaning—this arrangement seemed acceptable. Yu Xin Xin would still stay by her side. She comforted herself with this thought, if only that untimely reluctance hadn’t surfaced in her heart.
Wei Zhi held Yu Xin Xin and cried for a long time, as if releasing years of pent-up emotions, until her voice grew hoarse.
Yu Xin Xin gently patted her back, comforting her like an injured kitten, tender and patient.
As the sobs gradually quieted, Yu Xin Xin softly pulled away and cupped Wei Zhi’s tear-streaked face. Wei Zhi’s gaze wavered, revealing her vulnerability—a sight that tugged at Yu Xin Xin’s heartstrings. She wiped the tears away, frowning at Wei Zhi’s swollen eyes.
“Such a crybaby,” she said, her voice impossibly gentle, as if coaxing a sulky kitten. “Are you hungry?”
Wei Zhi’s state suggested her conversation with her father hadn’t gone well. She’d likely skipped lunch and dinner, and after crying so hard, she must be starving.
Sure enough, at the mention of food, Wei Zhi immediately felt the hunger and nodded pitifully, looking utterly adorable.
Yu Xin Xin couldn’t contain her overflowing affection, her heart melting completely. Normally, Wei Zhi took care of all her meals—this time, it was her turn to look after Wei Zhi. “What would you like to eat?”
“Tomato and egg noodles.” She remembered her mother often making it for her in childhood. Her mother, the youngest daughter of the Gu family, had been born late in her parents’ lives and was naturally doted on. Frail since birth, she’d grown up pampered and unskilled in household chores. Yet for Wei Zhi’s sake, she’d stubbornly tried to master cooking, though in the end, only this tomato and egg noodle dish had been barely edible. After her mother passed, Wei Zhi had longed to taste it again—but the opportunity was gone forever.
Yu Xin Xin smiled. “I’ll make it for you.” She nudged Wei Zhi toward the bedroom. “Go shower first, then you can eat.”
Wei Zhi managed a cooperative smile, though her eyes remained somewhat vacant. Grabbing a bathrobe, she stepped into the bathroom. The warm water washed over her, thawing her stiff body. As she splashed water on her face, the pain in her eyes receded, replaced by her usual cool detachment.
Yu Xin Xin had gone to the nearby supermarket earlier, unsure what to eat for lunch, and had bought some ingredients—including tomatoes. She retrieved the leftover vegetables from noon, prepared two bowls of noodles, then stir-fried two side dishes to accompany them. Just as she finished, Wei Zhi emerged.
“Time to eat,” Yu Xin Xin said, carrying the food to the dining table.
Wei Zhi stopped drying her hair and sat down, quite looking forward to the first meal Yu Xinxin had prepared for her. She eagerly picked up her chopsticks, took a bite, and found the taste surprisingly good.
The other woman’s collar was loose, and as she bent to sit, a glimpse of fair, smooth skin was revealed. Wei Zhi accidentally caught sight of a delicate pink hue, like cherry blossoms, and quickly averted her gaze, an odd tingling sensation fluttering in her chest.
“It’s delicious,” Wei Zhi said.
Yu Xinxin snapped out of her thoughts and sat across from her, pushing the plate closer. “If it’s good, eat more.”
The food was soon finished. Wei Zhi rubbed her stomach, her expression lingering with satisfaction, while Yu Xinxin wondered to herself—since when had her cooking improved so much? Her mother had always been critical of it.
After the meal, Yu Xinxin cleared the dishes. Wei Zhi stuck close to her, refusing to leave no matter how much she was shooed away. Yu Xinxin chalked it up to Wei Zhi’s unsettled emotions, reasoning that she was like a temperamental kitten craving extra attention, so she indulged her.
She had considered whether there was some conflict between Wei Zhi and her father that made the usually composed woman lose control like this. But after turning it over in her mind, she decided not to ask—it was Wei Zhi’s private matter, and she would share when she was ready.
Returning to her room, Yu Xinxin grabbed her pajamas and headed for the bathroom. Wei Zhi, still glued to her side, followed like a shadow. Yu Xinxin finally lost her patience. “I’m going to take a shower. Are you coming in too?”
Wei Zhi withdrew the foot she had already stepped into the bathroom with, staring at Yu Xinxin with hesitation. “Can I?” she asked uncertainly.
Yu Xinxin nearly choked on her own breath. Had crying somehow made this woman shameless? Weren’t they supposed to break up in a month? Without ceremony, she shoved Wei Zhi out and slammed the door shut.
Left standing outside, Wei Zhi chuckled to herself and retreated to the living room.
Now that she had vented her emotions, the negativity inside her was temporarily sealed away. She still wanted to try—she wasn’t ready to give up just yet. After all, there was still a month left.
Pulling a small mirror from the drawer, Wei Zhi scrutinized her reflection—bright eyes, white teeth, a stunningly beautiful face, the very picture of a classic beauty. She then glanced down at her figure—slender where it should be, curvaceous where it counted. There was no reason she couldn’t seduce a little girl like Yu Xinxin. Remembering how Yu Xinxin had blushed while looking at her, she decided that seduction was a viable strategy. If she just threw shame to the wind, she might still get herself a wife.
Putting the mirror down, Wei Zhi regained her confidence. Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted a small business card lying on the table. Her pupils constricted—the name “Gu Mingxi” was printed boldly on it. She picked it up, her expression darkening, then tossed it into the trash. Gu Mingxi had come knocking sooner than expected. She glanced toward the bathroom—looks like she’d have to give Gu Mingxi something else to worry about.
The bathroom door opened, snapping Wei Zhi out of her thoughts. Quickly, she tugged her collar lower and let the overlapping hem of her clothes part, revealing long, pale thighs. She leaned back on the sofa, striking what she thought was a seductive pose.
Yu Xin Xin stepped out of the shower and froze at the sight of Wei Zhi. The other woman’s robe was loosely draped, as if the slightest movement would send it sliding down her skin. Her snow-white complexion glowed under the light, the collar revealing a hint of cherry-red along her collarbone. Her crossed legs were almost entirely exposed, looking every bit like the coquettish figures from the old society.
Wei Zhi curled her lips and winked at Yu Xin Xin.
A shiver of disgust ran through Yu Xin Xin, and she flung the towel in her hand at Wei Zhi. “Who are you trying to seduce? I’ve seen it all before, and this half-revealed nonsense isn’t fooling anyone.”
Wei Zhi peeled the towel off her face, her eyes flashing with defeat. Her first attempt at seduction had ended in failure—not a good omen.
Wei Zhi: Must try harder. Adjust the approach and start over.
Aaa it’s so cute looking forward to see how it unfolds
