- Chapter 43: The Heat There Was Almost Scorching
In the evening, Han Yin left the student council and hurried back to the dormitory. She usually didn’t pay much attention to the school forum, so she hadn’t learned about the post right away.
After finishing her afternoon classes, as a member of the student council, she attended the regular meeting. It was only during the disciplinary department head’s report that she found out about the incident. By then, the post had already been deleted, and she couldn’t find any useful information on her phone—only the apology post and the disciplinary notice issued by the student council. As the disciplinary head, Li Feng, continued his report, she gradually pieced together the situation, her expression growing darker by the minute.
The person sitting at the head of the table seemed to notice the change in her demeanor and turned slightly to look at her. Her neat short hair was tucked behind her ears, and when she saw Han Yin’s grim expression, her brows furrowed almost imperceptibly.
The air in the meeting room seemed to freeze.
The members below grew tense, especially Li Feng, who was currently delivering his report. His scalp prickled with unease. Everyone knew that the council president, though highly capable and respected by all, was notoriously cold and unapproachable in her dealings. Those who had worked with her long enough could tell she was in a bad mood, and they silently pitied Li Feng for being the one under scrutiny.
“I don’t want to see anything like this happen again,” Ji Jin interrupted Li Feng’s report, her voice icy and devoid of emotion. “This school is a place for learning, not for baseless rumors to spread unchecked.”
Li Feng waited nervously, but when Ji Jin didn’t say anything further, he quietly let out a sigh of relief.
“This incident will be factored into the evaluation criteria for the student council scholarship,” Ji Jin added coolly.
Li Feng’s face fell. There went his hopes for this year’s scholarship. He gritted his teeth inwardly, wishing he could throttle the person who had made the post.
After the meeting ended, everyone dispersed, leaving only Han Yin and Ji Jin behind.
Han Yin’s expression remained stormy. Ji Jin studied her, the usual coldness in her demeanor softening slightly. “What’s wrong?”
“The girl in the photo is my roommate,” Han Yin said quietly, her voice tinged with worry.
Seeing the concern in Han Yin’s eyes, Ji Jin felt a pang of discomfort. She stood and walked over to Han Yin’s side, her tone gentle. “Is it Wei Zhi?” She paused. “The one Pan Yue confessed to?”
“Mm.” Han Yin looked up, meeting Ji Jin’s deep, unreadable gaze. Sensing the hidden emotions there, she reached out and took Ji Jin’s hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze. “She has a girlfriend.”
Ji Jin’s eyebrow arched, and the faintest hint of a smile flickered at the corner of her lips before vanishing. “The person who got disciplined this time was probably just a scapegoat. Tell your friend to be careful.”
“You mean…?” Han Yin frowned in confusion.
…
Han Yin’s mind raced with Ji Jin’s words as she quickened her pace.
“Han Yin.” A familiar voice called out to her. She stopped and turned to see a figure jogging toward her.
Zhou Tong halted two steps away, her tone cheerful. “Done with the meeting?”
“Yeah. How’s Wei Zhi?” There was a note of urgency in her voice.
Zhou Tong frowned. “She’s in the dorm.” Then, as if remembering something, she scowled. “Did you see that post on the forum?”
“I just found out about this. Let’s head back first.” With that, she led the way into the dormitory building. Zhou Tong tilted her head, watching her, and without much thought, instinctively followed.
Back in the dorm, Wei Zhi was sitting on the balcony, basking in the sun, while Yu Xin Xin sat across from her. The two were chatting when they heard the commotion and turned their heads in unison.
Wei Zhi’s expression was calm, her eyes still holding a trace of tenderness she hadn’t had time to conceal. She nodded slightly at Han Yin.
“You’re back!” Yu Xin Xin smiled. “Zhou Tong, where are my things?”
Han Yin closed the door and only then noticed the bag in Zhou Tong’s hand.
Zhou Tong stepped forward and pulled out two packs of snacks from the bag. Yu Xin Xin took them, opened one, and picked up a potato chip, popping it into her mouth. As her lips moved slightly, her bright eyes sparkled with satisfaction.
Wei Zhi watched her, her gaze gentle.
Yu Xin Xin picked up another chip and naturally held it out to Wei Zhi. “Try it, it’s really good.”
Wei Zhi froze for a moment, looking at the radiant smile before her. Leaning slightly forward from her chair, she gently took the snack from the other’s hand, accidentally brushing against a soft fingertip. She bit into the chip and leaned back into her chair, unconsciously licking her lips before swallowing.
Yu Xin Xin withdrew her hand, rubbing her index finger lightly. For some reason, the spot felt unusually warm.
Han Yin rolled her eyes discreetly and, seeing that Wei Zhi seemed unaffected, sighed in relief. “That post about Wei Zhi on the forum—you’ve all seen it, right?”
“Yeah, but the person who posted it already apologized,” Zhou Tong said.
“The poster is a computer science student named Zhou Chu. Usually quiet and with good grades—doesn’t seem like the type to do something like this.”
Wei Zhi tore her gaze away from Yu Xin Xin and looked at Han Yin, frowning. “Are you saying someone did this on purpose?” Her voice was cold. She didn’t care much about others’ opinions of her, but that didn’t mean she’d tolerate being provoked.
“Possibly. I think you should be careful lately.”
Wei Zhi fell silent, lost in thought.
“You mean someone’s targeting Wei Zhi?” Yu Xin Xin frowned, her eyes unusually frosty.
“Right,” Han Yin said. “That’s a possibility.”
“Ding-ding-ding…”
The class bell rang. Teacher Li finished packing up his textbooks and, as if remembering something, paused mid-turn. He raised a hand to signal the students to return to their seats. “I’ve finished reviewing the appreciation essays you all wrote earlier. By the way, which one of you is Zhou Tong?”
Suddenly called out, Zhou Tong’s heart skipped a beat. She stood up slowly, pinching her trembling thigh, and stammered, “That’s me, teacher.”
Could it be that the previous critique notes were so bad that I’m about to be scolded by Devil Li?
Teacher Li looked at Zhou Tong and nodded, an unexpectedly gratified smile appearing on his face.
Zhou Tong felt her heart inexplicably tremble at the sight, as if the world were ending.
“Zhou Tong has performed very well this time. I only assigned one critique, but she submitted two. Although the quality is somewhat lacking, the effort is commendable. I hope you continue to strive for excellence in the future.”
Zhou Tong froze for a few seconds, feeling Teacher Li’s approving gaze envelop her. Overwhelmed by the unexpected favor, she hastily replied, “Don’t worry, Teacher, I’ll work even harder and continue to shine on the path of art.”
Her sycophantic tone was nauseating.
Teacher Li’s admiration grew even stronger. He waved his hand, signaling Zhou Tong to sit down, before finally uttering the two long-awaited words: “Class dismissed.”
Then he stepped down from the podium and left, visibly pleased.
From the moment Teacher Li finished his first sentence, Yu Xinxin had already sensed impending doom. Teacher Li adored students who voluntarily devoted themselves to art, and Zhou Tong’s extra submission had undoubtedly placed her in the “devoted to art” category in his eyes. For such students, Teacher Li never hesitated to lavish praise and would inevitably give them more attention in the future. Yu Xinxin could already foresee Zhou Tong’s miserable fate.
Watching Zhou Tong make her earnest vow, Yu Xinxin couldn’t help but roll her eyes. She tugged at Wei Zhi and quietly retreated to the back of the classroom, hoping to slip out the rear door before Zhou Tong noticed.
By the time Teacher Li left the classroom, Zhou Tong gritted her teeth and turned to look for Yu Xinxin and Wei Zhi behind her. Seeing their empty seats, a surge of heat rushed to her head, making her ears ring. Staggering a couple of steps, she dashed out of the classroom and spotted Yu Xinxin dragging Wei Zhi as they sprinted away in the distance. She immediately broke into a run after them.
“YU—XIN—XIN! WEI—ZHI! I’M CUTTING TIES WITH YOU! AAAAAHHHH—!”
The lingering students nearby, hearing the pig-slaughter-like scream, scattered like frightened snakes, clearing a path.
Teacher Li, who hadn’t gone far, watched Zhou Tong’s energetic retreating figure.
Ah, youth is wonderful. This is what it means to be young!!
