- Chapter 5 - Are We Going to Separate?
That evening, Mrs. Yu specially cooked several dishes, all of Yu Xinxin’s favorites. Mr. Yu even brought out his precious wine, something he had kept for a long time, and, though it pained him, he poured himself a glass.
“Today you’re finally willing to open your treasure,” Mrs. Yu teased from across the room as she smelled the rich scent of the wine. “I remember when Lu Chen’s father begged you for days, and you didn’t even let him have a sip.”
“That’s different,” Mr. Yu laughed loudly. “Today, I’m happy.”
Mrs. Yu came out of the kitchen, setting down a bowl of fish soup, her face full of smiles. “All the food’s ready. Let’s eat!”
Mr. Yu lifted his glass and said with feeling, “Come on, let’s have a toast! For Xinxin getting into Jiang University!”
“It’s worth a toast!” Mrs. Yu smiled and poured herself a glass too.
Yu Xinxin didn’t know how to drink, so she used juice instead. The three of them raised their glasses and drank together.
Maybe Mr. Yu was too happy, because he drank a few more glasses, boasting endlessly about his precious daughter. In the end, Mrs. Yu had to help him back to the bedroom.
After cleaning up the dishes, Yu Xinxin went back to her room, took out her phone, and opened her chat with Qin Rui. The last message she had sent was still sitting there, unanswered.
That afternoon, after getting her admission letter, the first thing she thought about was telling Qin Rui the good news. She was eager to know if he had also received his letter.
She had gone to his house and knocked on the door, thinking Qin Rui would open it. But when she saw who it was, her smile disappeared. She stood properly and said, “Hello, Auntie. I’m here to see Qin Rui. Is he home?”
Mrs. Qin glanced at Yu Xinxin’s forced smile and answered coldly, “Qin Rui went out. Do you need something?”
“It’s nothing important. If he’s not here, I won’t bother you,” Yu Xinxin said, feeling a little disappointed.
She really wanted to know if Qin Rui got his letter, but lately, Mrs. Qin seemed a little cold toward her. Yu Xinxin didn’t know what she had done wrong.
Mrs. Qin had always been kind and gentle. Even after Mr. Qin had his accident, though her smiles disappeared, she still treated Xinxin and Lu Chen well, sometimes inviting them over. But recently, something felt off — it was like Mrs. Qin didn’t like her anymore.
After saying goodbye, Yu Xinxin went downstairs. After a few steps, she couldn’t help but turn back and ask, “Auntie, did Qin Rui get his admission letter?”
Mrs. Qin stopped closing the door and said impatiently, “He got it a few days ago. He’s preparing to go to BeiQing soon.” Then she closed the door.
Yu Xinxin stood there, confused. Why was Qin Rui going to BeiQing?
She thought about it for a while but couldn’t figure it out, so she simply stopped thinking and sent Qin Rui a message:
“Qin Rui, I got my admission letter from Jiang University. Did you get yours? Auntie said you’re going to BeiQing — why are you going there?”
Yu Xinxin stared at the chat screen, feeling uneasy.
Why was Qin Rui going to BeiQing?
“Qin Rui, are you back? I want to see you,” she texted again, feeling more and more anxious.
She waited for a while. No reply.
Just when she was about to go upstairs to find him, her phone lit up.
“I’m on the rooftop, Xinxin. I have something to tell you.”
Lately, Qin Rui had been acting strange. He treated her extra well, agreeing to everything she wanted. It made her uneasy. Every time he looked at her, there was a hidden pain in his eyes — sadness, struggle, and a bit of guilt.
Yu Xinxin’s heart was a mess. Part of her didn’t want to see him, but she knew she couldn’t avoid it. Even if Qin Rui was hiding something from her, she had to face it.
The night wind was strong. The stars were hidden behind the clouds.
Yu Xinxin walked to the rooftop. It was dark all around. After a moment, she spotted a figure not far away.
Qin Rui stood with his back to her, tall and thin, looking lonely in the wind.
“Qin Rui…” Yu Xinxin called out.
Qin Rui slowly turned around. His light clothes were fluttering in the breeze, his hair messy, covering half his face. In the dim light from the stairwell, she could barely see his expression. He walked a few steps closer.
Only when he got near could Yu Xinxin see clearly. His dark eyes were full of bitterness, struggling and reluctant. His handsome face looked tired. Seeing him like that made her heart ache.
“Xinxin, I…” Qin Rui’s hoarse voice sounded heavy.
“Qin Rui, it’s windy today. I’m cold. Can we talk another day?” Yu Xinxin interrupted quickly.
It wasn’t cold — it was still summer. She just didn’t want to hear what he was going to say. She was scared.
She turned to leave, but Qin Rui spoke.
“Xinxin, you probably heard from my mom. I’m going to BeiQing in a few days.”
“Oh, I know. If you want to go, just go,” Yu Xinxin forced a smile. She hated this heavy feeling between them.
“I’m going to BeiQing to work part-time. To earn money for living expenses,” Qin Rui said hoarsely.
“That’s good. Auntie can rest a little more then,” Yu Xinxin said, lowering her head and hiding her hands behind her back. “I’m really cold. Can we go back now?” Her voice even carried a hint of pleading without her noticing.
Qin Rui heard the strange tone in her voice but continued, swallowing hard. “A few days ago, I got my admission letter from Beiqing University. My uncle works in BeiQing. I’ll go there early, find a job, and start saving.”
“Oh. I got my letter too. It’s from Jiang University. Congratulations on getting into Beiqing.”
Beiqing University — the best in the country. She should be happy for him.
Mrs. Qin would be happy too. Mr. Qin would have been proud.
“Xinxin, I’m sorry. I lied to you. But going to Beiqing was my mother’s wish. And my father’s last wish too,” Qin Rui said above her.
So that’s why Mrs. Qin suddenly didn’t like her anymore, Yu Xinxin thought. And Qin Rui… maybe he always knew she couldn’t get into Beiqing.
“What’s there to be sorry about? It’s a good thing,” she said, but her throat felt stuck and painful.
“Xinxin, if you’re upset, you can cry. Or hit me if you want,” Qin Rui said. He couldn’t see her face, but he could hear the strain in her voice.
“I’m not upset! I don’t even know what you’re talking about!” Yu Xinxin raised her head and said lightly, “It’s too late tonight. One day we’ll call Lu Chen too and celebrate properly. I’m tired. I’ll go to sleep now.”
She turned quickly and walked away.
The moment she turned, tears poured down her face. She walked faster, afraid Qin Rui would see.
Qin Rui had his own future. She couldn’t hold him back.
At home, her parents were already asleep.
Yu Xinxin lay on her bed, crying silently into her pillow, her heart aching terribly.
Boom!!
Thunder roared outside.
Under the noise of the storm, Yu Xinxin finally cried out loud. She didn’t know how long she cried, but eventually, exhausted, she fell asleep.
—
Watching her walk away so fast, Qin Rui felt like his heart was breaking.
He clenched his fists tightly. Pain and bitterness spread through him.
He had no choice. He had to succeed. Only if he had a bright future would his mother feel at ease, and only then could he win everyone’s respect.
Boom!
Thunder rolled again. Heavy rain poured down.
Standing on the rooftop, Qin Rui slapped himself hard. Rainwater mixed with the tears on his face.
His beautiful face twisted in pain.
What would happen to him and Xinxin in the future?
