- Chapter 59: When Your Girlfriend Is Too Beautiful, There's Nothing You Can Do
On the way back, Yu Xinxin was dragged along by Zhou Tong, who chattered nonstop. Zhou Tong seemed extremely excited, continuously praising how gentle and beautiful Gu Mingxi was. Yu Xinxin learned that the person Zhou Tong had bumped into at the hotel entrance yesterday—the one she couldn’t stop thinking about—was Gu Mingxi. Watching her friend’s infatuated expression, Yu Xinxin suddenly didn’t know what to say.
“Don’t you have a bunch of ‘husbands’ to chase after? Gu Mingxi is beautiful, sure, but don’t you think she’s a bit older?” Yu Xinxin tried to dissuade her, not wanting to see her best friend go down a hopeless path.
“Is she? She doesn’t look that old,” Zhou Tong wondered.
Wei Zhi glanced sideways, lifting her eyelids slightly, her expression blank. “She’s almost 30—practically an old auntie.”
Yu Xinxin: O-old auntie? Is that really how you should talk about your sister?
Zhou Tong looked shocked, then turned starry-eyed. “That’s amazing! I need to ask her—how does she maintain herself so well?”
Yu Xinxin: …That’s not the point!
Seeing that Zhou Tong was beyond redemption, Yu Xinxin shifted her probing gaze to Wei Zhi. Wei Zhi always seemed to harbor some hostility toward this cousin of hers, and Gu Mingxi was the same. But even though the two appeared to be at odds, their relationship didn’t seem as irreconcilable as it looked.
By the time they returned to school, it was almost lunchtime. The three of them went to their usual restaurant. Before the food even arrived, Zhou Tong got a call, tossed out a “Mom’s calling me home for lunch,” and ran off.
Back in the dorm, Yu Xinxin looked at the soft bedding and yawned. She had barely slept the night before and, though she’d caught a little rest in the morning, yesterday had been packed—hiking, sightseeing, and then a whole night of… activity. Add to that Zhou Tong’s endless chatter on the way back, and now she could barely keep her eyes open.
Wei Zhi called Uncle Zhou to take care of some matters and entered the dorm a step later, only to find Yu Xinxin blinking back tears as she yawned.
“Go take a nap,” Wei Zhi said, staring at the dark circles under her eyes with concern.
“Mm,” Yu Xinxin agreed, climbing straight into bed and burrowing under the covers. The moment she closed her eyes, she felt a soft body slip in after her. She opened her eyes to meet Wei Zhi’s gentle gaze, brimming with unconcealed affection. Smiling, she felt a little smug—this tender, devoted side of Wei Zhi belonged only to her. Out of habit, she nestled into Wei Zhi’s arms.
Wei Zhi held her gently, her cheek resting against Yu Xinxin’s forehead, her voice soft as if afraid to startle the precious person in her arms. “Is it too cramped?”
The dorm beds were single-sized—plenty of space for one, but a bit tight for two. Yet, because it was Wei Zhi, Yu Xinxin didn’t feel cramped at all. Instead, she found it incredibly comfortable.
Yu Xin Xin gently shook her head in the other’s embrace and said, “No, it’s very comfortable.”
Wei Zhi’s eyes curved slightly as she softly stroked her back, coaxing, “Go to sleep.”
For the first time in her life, Yu Xin Xin had fallen so deeply in love with someone—and that someone was a woman. After the thin barrier between them had been pierced, everything they did together felt natural.
When had she started liking this person? Was it the breathtaking glimpse of her at their first meeting? Or the disbelief when she first said she wanted to be her girlfriend? Or perhaps that night on the streets of Beishi, when this person had miraculously appeared before her in casual home clothes and taken her in? The way Wei Zhi looked at her was tender, and so were the little details of her daily life. This tenderness had unknowingly seeped into her heart and taken root. By the time she realized it, she could no longer live without her. She only knew that she loved her—regardless of gender—and that she wanted to stay by her side forever.
Though Wei Zhi appeared strong, she was actually fragile. There seemed to be a painful past buried in her heart, tormenting her day and night. It pained Yu Xin Xin to see, but she didn’t know how to help. She hadn’t witnessed the scene from last night, but judging by Zhou Tong’s tone, Wei Zhi must have been terrified—so much so that she had acted so recklessly.
“Wei Zhi,” Yu Xin Xin murmured, lowering her head to hide the glimmer of tears in her eyes.
“Hmm?” The response was soft, laced with a hint of affection.
“I love you,” she whispered.
As if the tender confession had melted into the air, Wei Zhi’s heart softened. She pressed a kiss to the other’s forehead, brushing against her hair, and said contentedly, “I think what I feel for you now is more than just love.” Pausing, she lifted Yu Xin Xin’s chin, gazing into her moist eyes. “Xin Xin, I’m in love with you.”
Something slipped from the corner of her eye. Yu Xin Xin’s heart melted. “Why are you so foolish? Don’t you know you’ll end up at a disadvantage like this?”
Some said that liking and loving were different—that liking was the mutual closeness of two hearts, while love was an unbreakable entanglement, a deeper devotion than mere affection.
“But I just love you. It has nothing to do with advantage or disadvantage.” Wei Zhi gently rubbed the reddened corner of her eye, sounding a little helpless.
“I’ll try to fall in love with you quickly, so don’t rush into loving me so much yet.”
“Silly girl,” Wei Zhi chuckled.
“Wei Zhi…” Yu Xin Xin felt the overwhelming emotions in her chest and looked at her with a trace of expectation, as if trying to peer into the depths of those profound eyes. “Can I get to know you better?” She wanted to learn more about her, to understand the pain hidden in her heart, to see her always standing in the sunlight, to make her happy.
Wei Zhi understood the look in Yu Xin Xin’s eyes. Faced with her hopeful gaze, she hesitated. She loved Yu Xin Xin and was willing to give her everything—but could she really hand over the imperfect self from her past?
She wanted to give Yu Xin Xin a perfect lover.
After a moment, Yu Xin Xin buried her face against Wei Zhi’s neck. It wasn’t easy for someone to lay bare their entire self—she shouldn’t push too hard.
“I’m sleepy.”
“Sleep, then.” Wei Zhi patted her back soothingly.
Time passed, and drowsiness crept in. Half-asleep, she thought she heard a whisper by her ear:
“Xin Xin, just wait a little longer… okay?”
“Mm.”
When she woke up, it was already evening.
As soon as Yu Xinxin opened her eyes, she was met with the breathtaking beauty of Wei Zhi up close. Unable to resist, she kissed her lips, then her nose, and still feeling it wasn’t enough, she kissed her eyes as well.
What could she do? Her girlfriend was just too beautiful—she couldn’t help it.
The corners of Wei Zhi’s lips twitched as she opened her eyes, smiling gently with a hint of mischief.
“If you’re admiring my beauty, Xinxin, you can do it openly. No need to be sneaky,” she said, her voice light and cheerful.
“I wasn’t!” Yu Xinxin blushed, stubbornly refusing to admit it.
“Alright, Xinxin wasn’t,” Wei Zhi humored her.
Yu Xinxin’s face turned even redder, and she punched Wei Zhi in embarrassment, though the force was so weak it couldn’t even count as a tickle.
“Ahem…” Han Yin, who had been forced to listen to their sweet nothings, cleared her throat awkwardly. “Uh… I just got back. Didn’t hear anything.”
Han Yin internally: I’m so done. I didn’t mean to interrupt.
Yu Xinxin scrambled upright, her face burning so red it looked like it might bleed.
Wei Zhi slowly got out of bed, staring at Han Yin expressionlessly without a word.
Han Yin inexplicably felt a chill run down her spine and quickly blurted out, “I just came to tell you guys—my partner’s treating us to dinner tonight. Zhou Tong will be back soon.”
A tall, athletic figure with a neat short haircut flashed through Yu Xinxin’s mind. Is it her?
“Why are you looking at me like that? Hurry up and get ready,” Han Yin said, uncomfortable under Yu Xinxin’s gaze. It wasn’t like she meant to interrupt their intimate moment—who knew they’d be so lovey-dovey the second they woke up?
