- Chapter 6 - Meeting Her for the First Time
Qin Rui pushed his suitcase out of the apartment building. His mother followed him downstairs and pulled out a handful of cash from her pocket, stuffing it into his hand.
Qin Rui didn’t say anything. He opened his palm and saw two one-hundred yuan bills, some tens and twenties, plus a few coins.
His mother glanced at him and smiled.
“This is small change I prepared for you. It’s easier to use. If you run out of money after you get to BeiQing, just tell me. Remember to take good care of yourself and eat on time.”
“I know, Mom. You also have to take care of yourself. Don’t work too hard,” Qin Rui said, feeling a bit emotional.
“Don’t worry, I’m doing just fine!”
Qin Rui lifted his head and looked up at a certain spot on the third floor. The light blue curtains were tightly drawn.
He looked away and said goodbye to his mother, “Mom, you should head back. The taxi is waiting for me up ahead.”
“Alright, go now. I’ll watch you get in the car before I leave,” his mother urged him.
Qin Rui turned and walked away. When he reached the corner of the community, he couldn’t help but stop and look back. His mother’s thin figure stood there, waving at him.
His gaze moved up again. The window on the third floor stayed still. Xin Xin must really be angry this time.
He turned around once more, not daring to linger.
Behind the curtains, Yu Xinxin watched his figure disappear downstairs. Her heart was torn. She wanted to run out and say goodbye, but she was afraid she would cry. She didn’t want to become a burden on his path forward. If you really like someone, you should let them chase their dreams.
By evening, the setting sun was low in the sky.
Even though it was already autumn, Jiang, in the south, was still very hot. Yu Xinxin pushed a big suitcase to the new student reception area.
The student responsible for welcoming new students was a tall boy. He was about to pack up and leave when he noticed someone walking toward him. The girl was small, with her hair in a bun. She was puffing her cheeks in frustration as she struggled with the heavy suitcase. She looked quite cute. The soft sunset light fell on her face, making her eyes sparkle. Her skin was smooth, her figure slender. The boy stared in a daze.
It wasn’t until Yu Xinxin stood in front of him that he snapped back to reality. He quickly got up with a bright smile.
“You must be a freshman, right? I’m Wang Shuai, a second-year student. I’m here to help new students. What’s your major?”
The boy had a bright, sunny smile — the kind that girls usually liked.
“I’m Yu Xinxin, from the Oil Painting Department,” she answered politely.
“Let me check your dorm assignment.”
Her soft voice was like a little bunny’s. Wang Shuai felt his heart itch a little.
He flipped through the list for a moment, then pointed at something.
“You’re assigned to Girls’ Dormitory Building 3, Room 311. I’ll take you there.”
“Thank you, but it’s okay. I can go by myself,” Yu Xinxin said.
Wang Shuai looked a little anxious. “No way! Your dorm is pretty far. Let me help.” Without waiting, he grabbed her suitcase and led the way.
Yu Xinxin could only thank him again and follow behind obediently.
On the way, Wang Shuai chatted non-stop. He told her about the school’s layout, and also shared lots of gossip — like which senior boy had a crush on which department’s beauty, which senior girl was crazy about some school heartthrob, and even secret rumors about professors and teachers.
Listening to him talk endlessly, Yu Xinxin’s head started to ache. This senior was a bit too enthusiastic. Luckily, they finally reached the girls’ dorm.
“If you need anything at school, feel free to ask me. I’ll come anytime you call!” Wang Shuai said after adding her on WeChat.
“Thanks again. You’ve worked hard. I’ll go in now,” Yu Xinxin said quickly and hurried into the building, looking a bit flustered.
After asking the dorm manager, she learned that her room was on the third floor, at the very end. She thanked the auntie and made her way upstairs.
When she reached Room 311, she saw that the door was slightly open. She knocked politely and then pushed it open.
The room was dim in the late afternoon light. Yu Xinxin looked up and saw a tall figure standing by the window. Long black hair flowed down to her waist, shimmering under the warm sunset. The breeze made the curtains flutter gently, casting the figure in and out of the soft light.
The girl at the window turned around when she heard the sound. Her face was stunning, like a cold spring in the mountains. Her eyes were dark and deep like ink. She stood straight and tall, wearing a black silk shirt and fitted pencil pants that hugged her slim waist. She looked at Yu Xinxin with a questioning gaze.
Yu Xinxin was a little dazed. She had never seen anyone so beautiful. Realizing she was staring, she quickly smiled and said, “I’m a freshman. I arrived a bit late today. We’ll be roommates from now on.”
How embarrassing — she got completely stunned by another girl.
“I’m Wei Zhi,” the girl said coldly, her thin lips barely moving. There was a distant air around her, and the room suddenly felt much cooler.
After introducing herself, Wei Zhi said nothing more.
Yu Xinxin looked around. The dorm had four beds, each with a closet and desk below. The simple wooden furniture made the room feel cozy. It seemed that the other two roommates had already arrived but weren’t around. She pushed her suitcase next to the closet and began unpacking.
Wang Shuai returned to the reception area, feeling in a very good mood. Seeing that it was almost dark, he started packing up to leave.
Just then, a tall boy approached him.
“Hello, senior. Can you tell me how to get to the boys’ dorm?”
Wang Shuai looked up and thought, Why is this guy only arriving now?
Since he was in a good mood, he decided to personally show him the way.
“What’s your name?”
“Lu Chen. I’m in the Finance Department.”
“Let me check…” Wang Shuai flipped through the list and then said, “Alright, follow me. I’ll take you there.”
“Thank you, senior.”
This boy was none other than Yu Xinxin’s childhood friend, Lu Chen.
During summer break, his father had forced him to work at a friend’s company in another city. When he heard that Qin Rui had already gone to BeiQing, he worried about Yu Xinxin and tried to sneak back, only to be caught by his father.
After a while, Yu Xinxin finally finished unpacking. She touched her empty stomach and nervously asked, “It’s getting late. Did you eat already? Want to go to the cafeteria together?”
Wei Zhi lifted her head and gave her a cool look.
“I already ate,” she said.
Yu Xinxin awkwardly laughed and picked up her phone. “Then I’ll go by myself.”
She was about to leave when the door opened and two girls walked in. Seeing someone inside, the short-haired girl’s eyes lit up and she quickly spoke.
“Are you also staying in this dorm? I’m Zhou Tong, from the Oil Painting Department. This is Han Yin, from the Music Department.”
She pushed the shy girl beside her forward. Yu Xinxin was a little confused about why someone from the Music Department was in their dorm, but Zhou Tong quickly explained.
“The music dorms were full. Since there was a spare bed here, she got assigned to us.”
Yu Xinxin understood and smiled, “I’m Yu Xinxin, also from the Oil Painting Department.”
She glanced at Wei Zhi and added, “She’s Wei Zhi. I guess she’s also from our department?”
She ended her sentence with a questioning tone, looking toward the girl by the window.
Wei Zhi glanced at them and gave a small nod.
Zhou Tong and Han Yin stared at her for a moment, eyes lighting up. They were both a little stunned.
Yu Xinxin finally felt better — at least she wasn’t the only one who got dumbstruck by a beautiful girl.
“You’re so pretty!” Zhou Tong said brightly.
Han Yin covered her mouth and chuckled, clearly used to Zhou Tong’s ways. Wei Zhi looked a little impatient after hearing that. Seeing the mood, Yu Xinxin quickly changed the subject.
“Um, I was about to go eat. Have you guys eaten yet? Want to come too?”
“Cafeteria food? No way. I heard it’s terrible,” Zhou Tong said. “Han Yin and I walked around the front gate earlier. There are lots of restaurants and snack shops there. Since it’s our first day meeting, let’s go eat together. It’s on me!”
“Sounds good!” Yu Xinxin immediately agreed.
“I’m in too,” Han Yin said.
The three of them turned to look at Wei Zhi. Maybe she felt it would be rude to refuse right away, so after a brief silence, she gave a small nod.
Zhou Tong cheered and led the way out.
