- Chapter 60: Today’s Serving of Dog Food is a Bit Much
As the saying goes, it’s hard to please everyone. Yu Xinxin herself wasn’t picky about food. Han Yin, though primarily a violinist, usually avoided spicy dishes to protect her voice. Zhou Tong, on the other hand, was as fiery as her personality—no spice, no joy. Meanwhile, Wei Zhi’s stomach issues meant her diet was bland to the point where, aside from Yu Xinxin, no one in the dorm could match her restraint.
Thus, hotpot was the only option that could satisfy everyone.
Han Yin had reserved a table in advance. When the three arrived, they spotted Zhou Tong from afar at the entrance—she seemed to have just gotten there too.
As they approached, Zhou Tong, slightly out of breath, eagerly scanned their surroundings again and again before frowning.
“Han Yin, where’s your partner?”
Her forehead was beaded with fine sweat, clearly having run straight here after getting out of the car. Zhou Tong, ever the gossip, had been subtly probing about Han Yin’s mysterious partner ever since hearing about the relationship. Frustrated by Han Yin’s tight lips, Zhou Tong had been itching with curiosity—until now, when she finally had the chance to meet the person in question. How could she not be excited?
“She had something to attend to at school. She’ll be here soon,” Han Yin said, observing Zhou Tong’s reaction with an amused smile. “Let’s go in first.”
The hotpot and dishes arrived quickly. Zhou Tong kept glancing at the entrance, her eagerness making it seem like she was the one anxiously awaiting a lover. In contrast, Yu Xinxin and Wei Zhi remained composed, already having an inkling about the mysterious guest.
Wei Zhi smoothed Yu Xinxin’s slightly tousled hair, then frowned at the iced cola beside them. She poured a cup of warm water and placed it in front of Yu Xinxin. “Drink more warm water,” she instructed, pausing before adding, “Or you’ll have stomach cramps again in a couple of days.”
Yu Xinxin blinked, then burst into laughter. “What kind of straight-girl advice is that?” she teased.
“If it works, it works,” Wei Zhi replied impassively.
“Enough with the PDA, you two,” Zhou Tong groaned, too preoccupied with Han Yin’s mysterious partner to even enjoy the sweetness. Turning to Han Yin, she adopted a gossipy tone. “Han Yin, want to know who Wei Zhi’s partner is?” She was certain she had exclusive intel.
“Wei Zhi’s partner?” Han Yin chuckled, glancing at Yu Xinxin across the table before tilting her chin. “Isn’t she sitting right here?”
“How did you know?” Zhou Tong gasped, then realization dawned. “Did they tell you this afternoon?”
Han Yin shrugged. “I’ve known for a while.”
Zhou Tong was stunned. So they’d all been keeping it from her?
Yu Xinxin, suddenly dragged into the conversation, thought: Why am I the topic now? Did Han Yin figure it out ages ago?
Just as Zhou Tong was fuming, Han Yin stood up and walked briskly toward the entrance. Intrigued, Zhou Tong followed her gaze and saw Han Yin approach a tall, short-haired woman. After exchanging a few words, Han Yin naturally looped her arm around the woman’s and led her back, wearing a warm, affectionate smile Zhou Tong had never seen before.
Zhou Tong frowned in confusion: Did Han Yin invite someone else?
As Han Yin guided the woman to their table, Yu Xinxin’s eyes flickered with recognition. The woman stood at an estimated 175 cm—two centimeters taller than Wei Zhi—with a sleek, ear-tucked bob, fair skin, and striking features. Her demeanor exuded a composed, almost austere professionalism, her sharp gaze giving off an unshakable, somewhat intimidating air.
Ji Jin surveyed the group calmly, pausing briefly on Yu Xinxin and Wei Zhi before offering a polite smile. “Sorry I’m late.” The smile softened her stern aura just enough to seem approachable, yet maintained an unspoken distance that kept others at bay.
“Not at all, we just got here,” Yu Xinxin replied courteously. Just as Wei Zhi had guessed—it really was her.
“No, Han Yin, where’s your partner?” Zhou Tong was completely clueless about the situation, craning her neck to look toward the door.
“Isn’t she right here?”
Ji Jin’s sharp gaze swept over as she spoke coolly, “You must be Zhou Tong. I’ve heard Yin Yin mention you often. Hello, I’m her girlfriend.”
Zhou Tong felt uneasy under her stare: …
Her eyes darted between Han Yin and this person, then over to Yu Xinxin and Wei Zhi. The latter two looked completely unfazed, clearly having known all along. So she was the only one kept in the dark? Then she quickly realized another problem and felt a wave of belated fear.
Holy sh1t, she’d been living with a bunch of lesbians all along?
Zhou Tong blinked in confusion. “Did I stumble into a lesbian nest? How come you’re all getting girlfriends, leaving this straight girl feeling so out of place.”
Yu Xinxin countered, “You’re straight?”
Wei Zhi also looked up at her, dark pupils filled with apparent doubt.
Zhou Tong exclaimed excitedly, “Of course I’m—” Her voice cut off abruptly.
Oh right, she’d just turned gay yesterday. My bad, she wasn’t quite used to it yet.
“What I meant was, no wonder we’re roommates—we even share the same interests.” Reining in her excitement, Zhou Tong quickly adjusted her stance.
“Alright, let me introduce everyone.” Han Yin broke the awkwardness, pointing to the short-haired woman beside her. “This is Ji Jin, a junior in our law school and also our student council president.” Her tone was soft, carrying a hint of pride, like an elementary student eagerly showing off her treasure.
Han Yin rarely displayed such girlish demeanor, making Yu Xinxin take an extra glance at Ji Jin. The latter’s sharp eyes had softened into tender indulgence as she looked at Han Yin, her expression one of helpless tolerance.
Han Yin proceeded to introduce everyone present.
“How did you two meet?” Yu Xinxin asked.
“Our families have been close for generations. We’ve known each other since childhood.” Ji Jin seemed to have a good impression of Yu Xinxin, answering warmly.
“Childhood sweethearts are great. How long have you been together?” Zhou Tong joined the conversation.
Ji Jin seemed to be in a good mood now, her gaze at Zhou Tong softening slightly. “Not long, about a month.”
“Isn’t that the same as Xinxin and Xiao Zhizhi?” She then turned her gaze to the pair across from her.
Wei Zhi placed cooked meat into Yu Xinxin’s bowl before looking up to meet Ji Jin’s eyes. Their gazes locked, mutual appreciation faintly discernible as they nodded at each other.
The atmosphere among the five remained harmonious afterward. Zhou Tong watched the two newly formed loving couples before her and couldn’t help shedding tears of emotion. While pure love between girls was beautiful…
But wasn’t tonight’s dose of dog food a bit excessive?
This baby’s heart is suffering!!!
Deep in the night, at a certain commercial center, snow-white lights illuminated the area as bright as day. Gu Mingxi sat at her desk, rubbing her throbbing temples. The empty office contained only her. Facing the mountain of documents before her—seemingly endless—she paused after reviewing one proposal. The surroundings were so quiet she could almost hear the beating of her own heart. Day after day of mundane, tedious repetition, like a wound-up clock ticking along its predetermined path, circling endlessly between origin and destination.
Suddenly, her phone on the table chimed. Out of habit, she swiped open the screen, preparing herself for incoming work.
Zhou Tong: Sis, I’m not happy. (Seeking comfort.jpg)
Gu Mingxi was slightly surprised, an inadvertent smile curling at the corners of her lips.
Gu Mingxi: What’s wrong?
Zhou Tong: Someone’s abusing a dog.
Attached was a picture of several people eating hot pot together. In the photo, Wei Zhi and Yu Xinxin gazed at each other as if their eyes were dipped in honey, while another couple was equally inseparable.
Gu Mingxi: ?
Zhou Tong: I am that dog, commonly known as a single dog.
She included a photo of herself with a dog head filter. In the picture, Zhou Tong had a pair of puppy ears photoshopped onto her head, her eyes watery and her lips pouting, looking utterly aggrieved. Even funnier was the photoshopped bowl of dog food placed beneath her mouth.
Gu Mingxi couldn’t help but laugh out loud, her delicate makeup brightening with amusement.
Gu Mingxi: Good girl, the puppy is adorable.
Zhou Tong: ???
