- Chapter 62: Let’s Not Go Back to School Tonight, Okay?
The two wandered aimlessly down the street, neither speaking. The air around them was eerily still, the cold white streetlights casting a pale glow over their fair skin, accentuating their exhaustion.
Though she had anticipated it, the moment of confirmation still filled her with guilt. She had dragged Yu Xin Xin into this.
Wei Zhi’s heart grew heavier with each passing moment. The deafening silence made her limbs turn cold. She was waiting—waiting for Yu Xin Xin to speak, yet dreading what she might say.
She wanted to protect her. If only Yu Xin Xin could stay within the beautiful world Wei Zhi had crafted for her, simply loving her without a care, then Wei Zhi could face all the darkness alone. That way, she would have the courage to keep going. But Yu Xin Xin had said she wanted to know her better, so despite her reluctance, Wei Zhi had brought her here.
Would the real her be accepted?
Or would she be abandoned by everyone, just like before?
A figure darted past them, and Yu Xin Xin instinctively turned to look. It was a boy. Not far away, a girl ran toward him, and the two embraced like fish finally returning to the sea after being stranded too long on land.
“You’re so silly. Were you really just going to wait here if I didn’t come?”
“You said you’d come, so I knew you would.”
“You trust me that much?”
“Yeah.”
“Silly girl.”
Yu Xin Xin and Wei Zhi walked past the couple, who remained glued to each other, whispering sweet nothings as if the earlier tension had never existed.
They trusted each other unconditionally.
Yu Xin Xin suddenly felt a pang in her chest. She thought of Wei Zhi’s usual kindness, all the little moments they had shared. She had kissed those soft lips, caressed those gentle eyes, and had always been cherished with the utmost care. Someone so strong yet so fragile—so untouchable yet so hesitant to open her heart. Perhaps it was Yu Xin Xin’s own immaturity and lack of trust that had kept Wei Zhi from taking that final step.
She wasn’t a good enough lover.
“Wei Zhi…”
Wei Zhi’s heart skipped a beat. She stopped in her tracks, the cold in her limbs creeping toward her chest like icy tendrils. That familiar numbness washed over her again. Her hands, hanging limply at her sides, clenched into fists, her knuckles turning white from the force. She shouldn’t have let Yu Xin Xin come. The real her—dark, broken—would only disgust her.
To her surprise, she didn’t respond. Maybe if she stayed silent, she wouldn’t have to face the pain. But Yu Xin Xin clearly wasn’t going to let her.
Yu Xin Xin stared at Wei Zhi’s tightly clenched hands and mentally cursed herself. She reached out, enveloping Wei Zhi’s cold fingers in her own, gently massaging them. Her hands were so cold—achingly so. Carefully, she pried them open, revealing crescent-shaped marks where nails had dug into flesh, one even breaking the skin. A tear slipped down her cheek.
Wei Zhi panicked, using her other hand to wipe the tear away. “I’m sorry. Did I scare you just now?”
Yu Xin Xin’s heart ached even more. It was her fault, yet Wei Zhi blamed herself. She had every right to be angry, to throw a tantrum—but she didn’t.
“You’re so stupid. Why don’t you even know how to get mad?” Yu Xin Xin choked out between sobs.
Wei Zhi didn’t understand. The person before her was still crying, and all she could think about was how to make it stop.
“Please don’t cry,” she murmured, her mind a mess of helplessness. The earlier fear and anxiety had vanished, replaced by the overwhelming need to see Yu Xin Xin happy again.
If it meant Yu Xin Xin could smile, Wei Zhi would stay in the shadows… even if it hurt.
“You promised me you wouldn’t hurt yourself anymore,” Yu Xin Xin whispered, still rubbing Wei Zhi’s palm, her gaze lingering on the broken skin.
Wei Zhi followed her gaze to his own palm, where several distinct nail marks were visible. He relaxed slightly, saying, “These will heal soon.”
“I’m sorry,” Yu Xin Xin said.
Wei Zhi was taken aback, not quite understanding her meaning.
“I had some not-so-good thoughts about you just now. Is that why you’re upset?” Yu Xin Xin kept her head down, lacking the courage to look at him.
A pang of pain struck Wei Zhi’s heart, and his hand trembled slightly at his side.
So, had Xin Xin become disappointed in him?
“I was wrong. I shouldn’t have had those thoughts. You’re so good—nothing like what I imagined just now. I should have trusted you more. Please don’t be upset, okay? I promise I’ll change.” Yu Xin Xin grabbed his hand, like a child admitting a mistake, sincerely apologizing in hopes of his forgiveness—and more than anything, wishing to see him happy again.
Without a doubt, she was immature, but she was willing to strive to be better for the person she cared about.
Wei Zhi froze once more. All his unease and fear vanished upon hearing her words. Pulling her into an embrace, he buried his face against her neck, overwhelmed with indescribable emotion. It felt as though rain had begun to fall in his heart, soaking everything and melting away the hidden frost.
How could his Xin Xin be so wonderful?
Yu Xin Xin let him hold her, unsure how to handle the situation. Had Wei Zhi forgiven her or not?
He was hugging her—that must mean he forgave her, right?
But he wasn’t saying anything, so maybe he hadn’t?
Yu Xin Xin had rarely comforted anyone in her life, and now all those efforts were directed at Wei Zhi. Feeling something damp against her neck, she panicked. “Why are you crying? Oh no, please don’t cry. I’ll change, I promise!” Her voice trembled as she fought back tears of her own. “If you keep crying, I—I’ll start crying too.”
Wiping his eyes, Wei Zhi lifted his head and saw Yu Xin Xin’s pitiful expression. His heart softened like never before, and he couldn’t help but laugh at his earlier unnecessary worries. When had he become so sensitive?
Noticing the onlookers around them, Wei Zhi took Yu Xin Xin’s hand and quickly led her away from the crowd. They turned a corner, and Wei Zhi guided her into a dim alley.
The alley was pitch black, making it hard to see. Yu Xin Xin was still preoccupied with what had just happened when Wei Zhi suddenly stopped. She began to speak—”You… mmm…”—but was cut off by a fervent kiss.
Caught off guard, Yu Xin Xin stumbled back a couple of steps until her back hit the wall. Wei Zhi cradled her head protectively to shield her from the rough surface. His tongue slipped past her lips, savoring the sweetness that was uniquely hers, lingering greedily over every tooth before finally entwining with her soft tongue. Love surged through his entire being, and his overwhelmed mind seemed capable of expressing his feelings only in this way—to show her just how much he adored her.
Yu Xin Xin, drawing from past experience, took a gentle breath before the suffocating sensation could overwhelm her. A faint, cool fragrance flowed into her lungs, leaving her dizzy and lightheaded. Her heart fluttered wildly with Wei Zhi’s kiss, blossoming like a dazzling firework in the silent, deep night.
After the kiss, Yu Xin Xin buried her face in Wei Zhi’s embrace, breathing softly.
Wei Zhi’s eyes gleamed in the darkness as she leaned close to Yu Xin Xin’s ear, her breath warm and sweet like orchids, whispering in a low voice, “Xin Xin, you can actually have some not-so-innocent thoughts about me.”
Yu Xin Xin was puzzled—was she still angry?
Wei Zhi curled her lips slightly, lowering her voice to a coaxing tone. “Let’s not go back to school tonight, okay?”
???
Yu Xin Xin’s face instantly burned, her heart pounding heavily once again. She froze, unsure how to respond.
“Xin Xin, I want you.”
The request was so straightforward that if Yu Xin Xin still didn’t understand, she might as well bang her head against a wall. But she wasn’t ready yet! She hadn’t had time to brush up on that kind of knowledge. What if Wei Zhi had a bad experience? But she’d already rejected her once before—would refusing again be too much?
Wei Zhi waited a moment, but when there was no response, her mind gradually cooled. Finally sensing the unease in the person in her arms, she couldn’t help but feel a pang of regret.
She really wanted to slap herself twice.
“Uh… I didn’t mean it like that. I just wanted you to give me a gift, that’s all,” Wei Zhi said, her tone more awkward than ever.
“A… a gift?” Yu Xin Xin pushed down the chaotic thoughts in her mind, taking the offered way out.
A gift? What gift?
Wei Zhi quickly ran through Chinese traditional holidays in her mind, then foreign ones, finally grasping at a lifeline.
“A Christmas gift! Isn’t it almost that time?”
Yu Xin Xin: …
Christmas was still two months away.
