- Chapter 64: Wrapped Around Her Finger
Yu Xin Xin rolled her eyes playfully, gazing in the direction where Lu Chen had disappeared with exaggerated reluctance. “Ah! I never noticed before, but Lu Chen is actually quite handsome.”
She stole a sidelong glance and, sure enough, Wei Zhi wore an expression as if she’d swallowed a fly. Suppressing a smirk, Yu Xin Xin continued, “What’s even rarer is how considerate he is. He definitely wouldn’t get jealous over nothing. I wonder who’ll be lucky enough to be his girlfriend someday?”
Wei Zhi narrowed her eyes, her cool gaze fixed on Yu Xin Xin as she remarked icily, “You and Lu Chen must be very close, Xin Xin. You even know whether he gets jealous.”
“Of course!” Yu Xin Xin lifted her chin proudly. “He’s my bro—we practically grew up sharing the same pair of pants!”
“Sharing the same pair of pants?”
Wei Zhi looked up, her expression darkening.
A cold breeze rustled through the trees, sending a shiver down Yu Xin Xin’s spine. She rubbed her goosebump-covered arms and explained, “It was just when we were kids. My family was poor back then, and Lu Chen was taller than me, so I ended up wearing a lot of his hand-me-downs.”
In their neighborhood back then, the community was tight-knit. Whenever a child was born, families would pass down cleaned and neatly folded clothes from their own kids—partly for frugality and eco-friendliness, partly because worn-in clothes were more comfortable than new ones. No one made a fuss about it; it was just how things were.
Yu Xin Xin had worn secondhand clothes until she started school, when she finally got her own new outfits.
“Besides, Lu Chen was such a brat when we were little—always running from me because I chased him down to beat him up. And his mouth was so mean! He kept saying I’d never get married.”
Wei Zhi pictured a miniature version of Yu Xin Xin—a rosy-cheeked, porcelain-doll-like child—chasing after a boy taller than her, clad in oversized clothes, puffing up her cheeks in outrage. The image was unbearably adorable.
At that thought, the warmth in Wei Zhi’s eyes dimmed slightly.
If only she’d met her sooner. How she wished she could have grown up beside her.
“With me around, how could Xin Xin ever worry about not getting married?”
There was a pointed undertone to Wei Zhi’s words.
Yu Xin Xin blinked, then grinned. “Oh? Then tell me—why does having you around mean I’ll get married?”
Her eyes sparkled like a galaxy, bright and clear as they met Wei Zhi’s, softening the latter’s heart until it melted into a sea of starlit tenderness.
“Because you can only be mine.”
Even though same-s3x marriage wasn’t recognized in their country, even though their love wouldn’t be blessed by society—none of it could stifle the heartbeat racing for her in this moment.
“Stop talking nonsense. I’m not yours!”
Blushing, Yu Xin Xin averted her gaze and hurried ahead into the dormitory building.
Wei Zhi’s eyes overflowed with affection as she caught up in a few strides, lacing their fingers together as they walked side by side.
Even if the world refused to acknowledge them, even if the road ahead was thorny—
For her, she would carve a path through the brambles and bloom toward the sun.
The breath of autumn was fading, the air now carrying a wintry chill. Lately, more and more classmates had been falling ill with colds and fevers.
Yu Xin Xin took the thick coat handed to her by Wei Zhi. Though she thought about the last two periods being P.E. class in the morning and didn’t want to wear something too bulky, she couldn’t withstand Wei Zhi’s gloomy expression and obediently compromised by putting it on.
“You’re acting just like my mom!”
Wei Zhi deftly adjusted her collar, glancing at the sulky face before her and teasing, “Oh? Then you’d better be a good little baby.”
Yu Xin Xin felt cheated—how had she suddenly ended up a generation lower? “You’re the baby here!”
Zhou Tong put away her phone and said sourly, “Ugh—Xin Xin, don’t you smell something disgustingly sweet in the air?”
Han Yin’s fingers flew across her phone screen. When she looked up, her eyes held a lighthearted smile. Ignoring Zhou Tong’s jealousy, she said to Wei Zhi and Yu Xin Xin, “Ji Jin’s waiting for me downstairs. I’ll head out first.”
Yu Xin Xin nodded with a smile. “Alright.”
“Ughhh!! I can’t take this anymore!” Zhou Tong gritted her teeth as she watched Han Yin rush out in a hurry.
Wei Zhi took the book from Yu Xin Xin’s hands and coolly remarked, “If you don’t hurry up and get ready, you’ll be late.”
With that, she pulled Yu Xin Xin out the door, leaving Zhou Tong alone in the empty dorm.
Zhou Tong: They’re all terrible.
Once Wei Zhi and Yu Xin Xin were far enough away, Zhou Tong took out her phone and sent a photo via WeChat.
[Zhou Tong: Look, sis! Little Zhi Zhi is so domestic! Envy.jpg]
The photo was one she had secretly taken earlier—Wei Zhi adjusting Yu Xin Xin’s clothes, the morning sunlight casting a soft glow on her fair skin. Her gentle eyes, misted with the morning light, made her look like the perfect doting partner.
Though sweet, Zhou Tong couldn’t deny her own envy. Thinking about how her own goddess remained out of reach, she slumped in frustration.
Gu Mingxi had just settled at her desk when her phone buzzed. Seeing the name of someone who had been particularly active lately, she smirked and opened the photo. After a moment of silence, a complicated emotion flickered in her eyes before she sighed. Then, spotting the jealous meme above the image, her eyes warmed with amusement again.
[Gu Mingxi: The temperature’s dropping lately—make sure to keep warm too, Xiao Tong.]
Zhou Tong let out an excited squeal, bouncing around the dorm before guiltily covering her mouth.
Good thing Xin Xin and the others weren’t here.
Clutching her pounding heart, her face flushed red. Her goddess was so sweet!
[Zhou Tong: You take care of yourself too, sis! Mwah! .jpg]
Seeing the adorable sticker sent back, Gu Mingxi blinked, then happily replied with an “OK” emoji before finally focusing on work.
The weather was nice today—the sunlight warm. Since two classes had P.E., the field was crowded.
Yu Xin Xin and Zhou Tong were paired up playing badminton. Her skills weren’t great, and she kept missing the shuttlecock. After watching it veer off course yet again, she waved her hand in frustration.
“Let’s take a break. Picking up the shuttlecock all the time is exhausting.”
Zhou Tong walked over with a smile, grabbing a bottle of water and handing it to her.
Yu Xin Xin was sweating, with strands of hair sticking to her skin. Her cheeks were slightly flushed as she panted lightly, frowning uncomfortably as she took off her jacket before accepting the water from Zhou Tong and taking small sips.
Zhou Tong glanced at Wei Zhi, who stood not far away with an unapproachable expression, then back at Yu Xin Xin’s lightly flushed face. A mischievous grin spread across her face as she leaned in and whispered, “With your stamina, you’d definitely be at Wei Zhi’s mercy when it comes to that.”
“Pfft—”
Yu Xin Xin spat out her water, her face burning red as she glared at Zhou Tong, wishing she could tear her mouth off.
“What nonsense are you spouting?”
Zhou Tong, feeling the satisfaction of revenge, continued, “How is it nonsense? Given the current situation, you’d definitely be the one pinned down.”
Yu Xin Xin’s cheeks burned even hotter. She stole a glance at Wei Zhi, who was focused on her phone, then turned back to glare fiercely at Zhou Tong. “Shut up.”
Suddenly recalling Wei Zhi’s words from a few nights ago, her face grew even hotter. She hadn’t actually studied up on the relevant knowledge yet—she couldn’t keep rejecting Wei Zhi forever.
Looking at Zhou Tong’s infuriating grin, she stammered, “Um… do you… know about between girls…?”
“??” Zhou Tong blinked. “What are you trying to say?”
“I mean…” Yu Xin Xin was mortified. She tugged Zhou Tong closer and whispered something in her ear.
Zhou Tong’s eyes widened in shock before she burst into uncontrollable laughter, tears streaming down her face.
Yu Xin Xin couldn’t bear to look at her anymore and turned away, staring at the leisurely drifting clouds in the sky.
“Well, do you have it or not?”
After laughing for what felt like forever, Zhou Tong finally calmed down, clutching her aching stomach. “I don’t have any videos, but I do have some short stories. I’ll send them to you later.”
“…Oh.”
Wei Zhi’s attention shifted from her phone as she looked up at Yu Xin Xin.
“???”
