- Chapter 7 - Can't Help but Want to Get Closer
They chose a big restaurant near the school gate. Since it was the first day of school, many parents were there having meals with their children, clearly coming to drop them off.
After all the dishes arrived, Zhou Tong was the first to raise her glass.
“From now on, we’re roommates. Let’s share good times and bad times together. Cheers!” Zhou Tong waved her hand boldly and drank it all at once.
Yu Xinxin and Han Yin smiled helplessly and also finished their drinks.
Yu Xinxin didn’t really know how to drink. The bitter taste of the beer filled her mouth and slid down her throat into her stomach. Because she drank too fast, she choked and started coughing, making Zhou Tong laugh at her. She might be the only person who got choked drinking beer.
Holding back her coughs, she looked at the others.
Han Yin seemed fine. Wei Zhi, however, only took a small sip — her glass was almost untouched.
The atmosphere at the table felt a little awkward. Yu Xinxin was about to say something when she heard a light voice.
“I have stomach problems. The doctor told me not to drink.”
The three of them glanced at the food on the table — most of it was spicy and heavy.
“It’s my fault. I should’ve asked about everyone’s tastes when ordering. Should I order some lighter dishes?” Zhou Tong looked a little regretful.
“No need. I’m not hungry,” Wei Zhi said calmly.
In the end, Zhou Tong still ordered a bowl of porridge for her.
After this meal, Yu Xinxin had a basic impression of her three roommates.
Zhou Tong had a carefree personality. Her short hair was neatly cut, just reaching her chin. When she smiled, a faint dimple appeared on her left cheek.
Han Yin, on the other hand, had studied music since she was young. She had a gentle temperament, delicate features, and a tall, slender figure — probably around 172 cm. Even when silent, she gave off a strong and confident aura, like a true elegant beauty.
Sigh, comparing yourself to others is really frustrating. No matter where she went, Yu Xinxin always seemed the shortest.
After the meal, the four of them walked back together.
“NomNomNomNomNomNom…”
The familiar ringtone sounded. Seeing “Rui Qin” on the caller ID, Yu Xinxin couldn’t help but smile brightly.
“Hello, Rui Qin.”
“How do you feel on your first day of college?” A warm voice came from the other end.
“Pretty good, just a little not used to it yet.”
“By the way, did Lu Chen contact you? I don’t know what’s wrong with that guy lately. His phone’s always off.”
“…No,” Qin Rui said in a low voice.
“Alright. Chen’s dad said he went to another city for an internship. It should be fine,” Yu Xinxin said, sounding a bit worried.
The three of them had grown up together and were very close. But after choosing their college preferences, she clearly felt the distance growing. Whenever she mentioned one boy in front of the other, there would only be silence. Later, Lu Chen suddenly left town without saying a word, and soon after, Qin Rui also left. Now it was just her, and even her connection with Qin Rui seemed to be fading.
“I have things to do at the shop. I’ll call you again later.”
“Wait, Rui—”
“Beep beep beep…”
Since Qin Rui moved to North City, they had only contacted each other a few times. Every time, he seemed very busy and ended the calls quickly.
“Who was that? Your boyfriend?” Zhou Tong teased.
Yu Xinxin nodded.
“Is he handsome?” Zhou Tong asked eagerly.
In the back, Wei Zhi, who had been silent the whole time, looked up at Yu Xinxin with deep eyes. Boyfriend?
The next morning, the four woke up early. Since Han Yin was majoring in music, she left first to meet with her classmates. The other three cleaned up and went to the oil painting classroom. There weren’t many students yet, so they casually picked some seats.
As more students arrived, the room grew noisier.
At first, Yu Xinxin didn’t notice anything. But slowly, she felt like someone kept sneaking glances at them. Following their eyes, she realized most of the stares were directed at Wei Zhi. Because she sat next to her, Yu Xinxin also got some attention.
She could even feel a coldness spreading from beside her and couldn’t help but shiver. So chilly!
A guy in the front row passed by again, sneaking glances sideways and stretching his neck as if trying to twist his eyes around the corner. Wei Zhi, who had been quietly reading, frowned slightly. The air around them turned so cold it could freeze a bunch of flies. She looked up indifferently. The boy was startled by her gaze, quickly turning away and returning to his seat, pretending nothing happened.
Pfft! Yu Xinxin couldn’t help laughing.
Wei Zhi gave her a brief glance. Yu Xinxin quickly rubbed her arms and hugged Zhou Tong to warm up.
A middle-aged man in his thirties entered the classroom. His steps were steady, and his eyes were kind. He walked to the podium and gestured for silence:
“Everyone, quiet down.”
As he spoke, the classroom gradually quieted.
“I’ll introduce myself. I’m your homeroom teacher, Xin Chao Liu. If you have any problems, study-related or personal, you can come to me anytime. I hope we all have a happy and wonderful four years together.” He paused, scanning the students, then continued, “As you know, we’ll start military training soon. It’s to build your political awareness, love for the country, and help you get to know each other. Later, a few male students will collect your training uniforms. Please gather at the sports field at 2 PM.”
As he finished speaking, many students sighed.
Seeing this, Teacher Liu was not surprised. “Don’t be upset. Military training is part of college life — full of both sweat and laughter. Oh, and who’s Zhi Wei?”
Hearing her name, Wei Zhi stood up. Tall, cold, and graceful, she easily drew everyone’s eyes just by standing.
Teacher Liu looked at her, a little surprised, but quickly said, “Zhi Wei, your father called. Since you just had surgery and haven’t recovered yet, you can skip the military training. Please write a leave note for me later.”
“Okay. Thank you, Teacher,” Wei Zhi replied in a clear, cool voice — like a fresh spring in the summer, pure and refreshing.
Teacher Liu gestured for her to sit down.
“Since most of you don’t know each other yet, let’s do self-introductions, starting with this student.”
“Hello, my name is…”
“My name is…”
When the three returned to the dorm with their training uniforms, Han Yin was already back, playing with her phone — probably chatting with someone.
“You’re back. Let’s exchange phone numbers and WeChat!” she said.
They had been too tired the night before and fell asleep right after returning, so they hadn’t exchanged contacts yet.
After adding each other, Zhou Tong created a group chat and named it “Gathered from All Corners.”
“By the way, remember to put on sunscreen before training this afternoon,” Zhou Tong said weakly, then her eyes lit up as she looked at Wei Zhi. “So jealous! Zhi Wei doesn’t have to join.”
Han Yin looked at Zhou Tong in confusion.
“Teacher said Zhi Wei just had surgery, so she can be excused,” she explained.
Hearing her name, Wei Zhi, who had been silent, looked up. “Good. I prefer the peace.”
On the way back, Wei Zhi had received over ten attempts to chat with her and countless stares — though a few were directed at Yu Xinxin and Zhou Tong as well.
Yu Xinxin noticed that Wei Zhi didn’t seem to enjoy talking with people. She was so quiet it felt almost heavy. Someone as beautiful as her should be dazzling, standing proudly in the spotlight. So why was she so cold and distant?
When Wei Zhi sensed someone looking at her, she raised her head slightly. Their eyes met. Her dark pupils were deep and cold, like frozen snow that never melted, chilling and distant. Yu Xinxin was startled. What had Wei Zhi gone through to have such lifeless eyes?
Meanwhile, Wei Zhi studied the little girl sneaking looks at her. Her eyes were bright and pure, like a shining galaxy. The first time Wei Zhi met her, she thought the girl looked soft and sweet — obviously well-protected. Her pink T-shirt and blue casual pants were simple, but on her, they seemed full of fresh life. The first time they met, the girl was stunned, but quickly gave a warm, sunny smile — like the first morning sun in winter.
It made Wei Zhi feel an urge to get closer.
A small, bitter smile crossed her lips. Since when did I start longing for sunlight again?
Meanwhile, Yu Xinxin thought, What’s wrong with her? Why did she look so sad when she smiled just now?
