- Chapter 8 - Accidentally Saw What I Shouldn’t Have Seen
At 2 p.m., the heat was unbearable. The scorching sun roasted the earth. The playground at Jiang University was packed with students, all dressed in green camouflage uniforms. The place was bustling with noise and excitement.
Yu Xinxin and Zhou Tong hid under the shade of a tree, lazily fanning themselves with their hats, barely managing to bring a little breeze.
Zhou Tong wiped the sweat off her forehead and said, “It’s way too hot. When is the instructor coming?”
“He should be here soon,” Yu Xinxin replied.
“I heard the instructors our school hired are real soldiers. Do you think he could be super handsome?” Zhou Tong, who had been drooping from the heat, immediately perked up when she mentioned a handsome guy.
“Why are you so sure he’ll be handsome?” Yu Xinxin said, annoyed.
“I’m not sure, but what if he is?”
Yu Xinxin rolled her eyes and couldn’t be bothered to answer.
Lu Chen and a few of his roommates had changed into their uniforms and were heading to the playground. Along the way, they passed many students dressed in green camo. Lu Chen’s mind was elsewhere, and his eyes kept scanning the crowd. Xinxin should be among these people, right?
“Lu Chen… Lu Chen!”
Hearing his name, Lu Chen turned his head. “What?”
“I was calling you, man. What are you staring at?” one of his roommates, Wang Daqing, said.
“Nothing.”
“I heard there’s a beauty in the oil painting department. This morning, their first meeting caused quite a stir,” Wang Daqing said gossipingly.
“So what? She wouldn’t even look at you,” Lu Chen hit him without mercy.
“But what if she likes someone like me? You have to dream big! What if it comes true?” Wang Daqing said shamelessly.
Lu Chen shot him a mocking glance. “Get real.”
“Alright, alright. I know my limits. I have no chance. But you do!” Wang Daqing sized up Lu Chen. His roommate was a proper handsome guy. From what he could tell, several girls were already interested in Lu Chen. But Lu Chen didn’t seem to care. Wang Daqing still felt sorry thinking about those girls’ disappointed faces earlier.
Lu Chen heard his roommate’s nonsense and said, “I’m not interested.”
“Senior students from the computer science department are already planning to chase after her. If you don’t act, you’ll miss your chance,” Wang Daqing said.
“Not interested,” Lu Chen repeated. He kept looking around. The playground was packed and everyone wore the same uniform. It wasn’t easy to find one person in the crowd. Lu Chen knew that. Still, he couldn’t help but search. Just as he looked toward the trees by the field, his roommate tugged him.
“The instructors are here!”
Lu Chen turned around and saw a team of soldiers walking down the path beside the playground, standing tall and full of energy.
Yu Xinxin also noticed the approaching instructors. She ended her chat with Zhou Tong and lined up under the temporary sports committee’s orders.
“Hello students. I’m your instructor. For the next two weeks, I’ll train you following a soldier’s standards…”
In the girls’ dormitory, room 311, it was suddenly quiet. Just moments ago it had been lively, but now, with the other three girls gone, Wei Zhi sat alone on the balcony, letting the sunlight pour over her. Even though it was already autumn in the south, the sun was still harsh. But Wei Zhi didn’t mind. From the look on her face, she even seemed to enjoy it.
Her gaze drifted outside, deep in thought—or maybe thinking of nothing at all. Her eyes were cold, hollow, and lifeless.
Buzz, buzz…
The phone on the table lit up.
Wei Zhi looked at the name on the screen—Wei Shenghong. A flash of coldness passed through her indifferent eyes. She reached out and turned off the screen, hanging up the call.
But the person on the other side was persistent. Just five seconds later, the phone buzzed again with the same name.
Wei Zhi’s face showed annoyance. She tapped her long, slender fingers on the table, stayed silent for a moment, and finally answered.
“Hello.”
“…It’s me.”
“Is there something you want?” Her voice was cold and emotionless.
“Do you have to talk to your father like that?”
“If it’s nothing important, I’m hanging up.” Wei Zhi frowned.
“…Come home for the Mid-Autumn Festival,” the man’s voice softened after a pause.
“Do I still have a home?” Wei Zhi’s voice turned even colder. Hatred flashed through her cool eyes.
“…It’s been so long. Can’t you forgive me?” Wei Shenghong’s voice sounded tired and full of pain.
“I can’t,” she said without a hint of mercy.
Wei Zhi hung up. Her chest rose and fell slightly as she tried to calm down. Her eyes remained icy cold. After a while, she slowly closed her eyes and took a deep breath. The bright sunlight bathed her body, making her pale skin glow like fine jade. She looked like a fairy untouched by the world—cold and pure. She liked the feeling of the sun shining on her. It was warm. It made her feel alive.
By evening, the first day of military training finally ended.
Yu Xinxin hadn’t expected that just standing in military posture could be so exhausting. After an entire afternoon, her clothes were soaked. All she wanted now was a hot shower and a fresh change of clothes.
“I’m heading back to the dorm. What about you?” Yu Xinxin asked Zhou Tong.
“I need ice cream to survive. I’m going to the supermarket,” Zhou Tong said weakly.
“Alright, I’ll go back first.”
“Okay.”
Yu Xinxin rushed to her dorm, pushed open the door—and froze. Her bl00d raced. Her heart thudded loudly.
The curtains on the balcony were drawn. The room was dim. In front of her stood someone with their upper body bare.
It was only a view from the back, but the sight was shocking. The person’s long, black hair was loose, the smooth back gracefully curved. Water trickled down their skin, making it shimmer. Their body was flawless, like polished jade—breathtaking and seductive. It was a stark contrast to the cold, aloof aura they usually had.
Wei Zhi instantly sensed someone’s presence and turned her head sharply, her cold, sharp gaze locking onto Yu Xinxin. When she saw who it was, her body relaxed. She casually turned around.
Her skin was so fair it almost glowed. Because she had just showered, her cheeks were flushed, looking soft and tempting—completely different from her usual cool appearance.
Yu Xinxin’s face turned scarlet. She hurriedly covered her cheeks with her hands. Only then did she realize she hadn’t even closed the door. She quickly rushed to shut it.
Wei Zhi found Yu Xinxin’s reaction amusing and couldn’t help but smile.
That smile was like snow melting, flowers blooming—beautiful beyond words.
Yu Xinxin was stunned again, dazed.
Wei Zhi put on her T-shirt slowly, watching Yu Xinxin with interest.
Earlier, she had accidentally fallen asleep on the balcony. When she woke up, sweaty, she went to shower. She had forgotten to bring clean clothes but thought no one would be in the dorm—only to be caught by Yu Xinxin.
Yu Xinxin snapped out of her trance and realized she was alone in the room with Wei Zhi. Thinking about how she had been staring just now, she was so embarrassed she wanted to dig a hole and hide.
In a panic, she blurted, “I’m going to the supermarket!” and fled.
Yu Xinxin ran out of the dorm, feeling like her face was about to burn off.
Just then, Zhou Tong returned with an ice cream spoon in her mouth. She saw Yu Xinxin rushing out in a flurry, looking embarrassed.
She blinked in confusion but didn’t think much of it and walked into the dorm.
Inside, she found Wei Zhi and casually asked, “What happened to Xinxin? I just saw her run off.”
Then, Zhou Tong stared wide-eyed.
What just happened? The cold beauty… was smiling? And it looked really nice too!
Yu Xinxin ran all the way out of the girls’ dorms without realizing it. She ended up on a grassy field inside the campus, a famous dating spot for couples.
Since classes had just ended, many couples strolled around, hand in hand.
The image she had just witnessed kept playing over and over in her mind. Her head was spinning. She sat on the grass for a long time before finally calming down.
The evening breeze had lost the harshness of the daytime heat. It blew gently, refreshing and cool.
Once she fully relaxed, she decided to head back.
Just then, from the corner of her eye, she caught a glimpse of two figures under a camphor tree not far away. They seemed to be arguing. Because it was a bit far, she couldn’t see clearly, but she saw a girl break free from the other’s grasp and run off. The person left behind stood there, watching her leave, not chasing after her. Their shadow stretched long in the sunset, looking lonely and sad.
Yu Xinxin thought the girl looked a little like Han Yin—but maybe not.
She glanced again at the figure under the tree, her heart filled with confusion.
“Xinxin!”
A voice called out, filled with excitement. Yu Xinxin turned and saw someone running toward her.
The boy was tall, dressed in camouflage, sunlight glinting off his dark brown hair. Because of sweat, his bangs stuck to his forehead. He had thick eyebrows, bright eyes, and a sharp face. When he saw her turn around, he grinned brightly.
“Lu Chen?” Yu Xinxin was surprised.
“Where have you been lately? You didn’t answer my calls!” Yu Xinxin punched him lightly in annoyance.
“I was doing my internship,” Lu Chen said, not minding her punches at all, smiling even wider.
“What are you doing at Jiang University?”
Yu Xinxin finally noticed the training uniform on him and widened her eyes.
“Weren’t you supposed to go to Hai University? How are you here? Won’t Uncle Lu skin you alive?”
“Pfft, that old man can’t control me! I didn’t do well on the entrance exams, so I came here to be with you,” Lu Chen said casually.
“Didn’t do well? Who are you kidding? With your skills?” Yu Xinxin clearly didn’t believe him.
“Forget it, forget it. Come on, I’m treating you to dinner tonight.”
“Alright! I’m not saying no to free food!”
