- Chapter 9 - Why Is She So Adorable?
Yu Xinxin couldn’t stand how sweaty and smelly she felt anymore. She had rushed out earlier without even bringing her phone and was worried her roommates might get anxious if they couldn’t reach her. So she and Lu Chen agreed to meet at 7 PM downstairs at the girls’ dorm. Originally, Yu Xinxin wanted to meet at the school gate, but for some reason, Lu Chen insisted on waiting downstairs by the dorm today.
When she got back to the dorm, Han Yin was already there, sitting on the balcony reading a book, earphones in. Yu Xinxin thought of what she had just seen on the lawn and wanted to ask if that person had been Han Yin—but she stopped herself. What if she’d been wrong? Besides, it was Han Yin’s personal business. She shouldn’t pry too much.
As Yu Xinxin was thinking, she suddenly felt something and turned around—only to meet a pair of cold, quiet eyes. She had no idea when Wei Zhi had gotten behind her. Their eyes met so suddenly that Yu Xinxin’s heart skipped a beat. The scene from earlier that afternoon played back in her mind again.
“Ahem… ahem,” Yu Xinxin cleared her throat.
She stepped aside, calmly took a change of clothes from the cabinet, and walked past Wei Zhi as if nothing happened, heading into the bathroom with a cool and collected look.
The moment she locked the bathroom door, Yu Xinxin was overcome with embarrassment. Her face turned red all the way to her ears. What’s wrong with me? she thought. It’s not like I haven’t seen someone naked before. Besides, she’s a girl too! Why am I so shy about it?
Wei Zhi looked at the closed bathroom door, thinking of the way that little girl had tried so hard to act calm. She couldn’t help but smile a little. Why is she so funny?
Zhou Tong, who was munching on potato chips nearby, couldn’t stay calm anymore. She glanced at the setting sun outside. The sun still sets in the west… so why does it feel like the ice-cold goddess just changed her personality?
Yu Xinxin stayed in the bathroom for a long time. When she finally came out, she didn’t dare look at Wei Zhi’s face. She told Han Yin and Zhou Tong she was going out to eat with a friend, then slipped away like she was escaping.
Zhou Tong was about to say something, but Yu Xinxin had already vanished.
“She just started school. Besides us, what friends does she even have?”
Han Yin took off her earphones and shrugged.
Wei Zhi just shook her head and said nothing.
Thinking of how Yu Xinxin had run off like that, they all felt like things were getting stranger by the day.
When Yu Xinxin arrived downstairs, Lu Chen was already waiting. He had changed into a loose tracksuit and looked full of energy, catching the attention of many girls nearby. Is this guy always this popular? Yu Xinxin thought to herself.
“Let’s go.”
“Sure! What do you want to eat?”
Yu Xinxin was about to answer, but suddenly felt a chill behind her, like someone was watching.
“Let’s go check out the school gate first,” she said, feeling a bit uneasy.
“Alright,” Lu Chen smiled.
In the end, they went back to the same restaurant they ate at yesterday. While they were eating, Yu Xinxin asked Lu Chen about what had been going on with him lately. He answered everything without holding back.
It turned out Uncle Lu had been really mad when he found out Lu Chen chose Jiang University. Not only did he take back all the figures and games he had promised to buy him, he also sent Lu Chen to a friend’s place and made him do unpaid work for a whole month—just to ‘toughen him up’ and let him get a taste of the real world.
Seeing how relaxed the atmosphere was, Yu Xinxin put down her chopsticks and looked at Lu Chen seriously.
“Hey, what’s going on between you and Qin Rui? The three of us grew up together. If something’s wrong, just talk it out. Don’t let it ruin years of friendship.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll talk to Qin Rui,” Lu Chen said after swallowing his food.
“You said it! Make up with him soon.” Yu Xinxin grinned.
She picked up her chopsticks again and ate a bit more than usual, maybe because she was in a good mood. Lu Chen, sitting across from her, quietly gave her food from time to time, his eyes full of affection.
After dinner, they walked back together.
“Ugh, I’m so full,” Yu Xinxin said, rubbing her stomach as they walked.
Even though it was hot during the day for military training, the evening breeze on campus was cool and refreshing. Her mood lightened.
“I told you not to eat so much, but you didn’t listen,” Lu Chen said, though there was no hint of blame in his tone.
When they were almost at the dorm, Lu Chen looked around and said, “Wait here for a sec.”
Before Yu Xinxin could respond, he was already gone.
He ran to the small shop beside the girls’ dorm. A while later, he came out holding a big bag. When he got closer, Yu Xinxin realized it was full of her favorite snacks. Seriously? Trying to burst me open now?
She knew the snacks were for her, because Lu Chen never ate snacks.
“Why did you buy so many snacks? Didn’t I just say I was full?”
“Who said these were for you? I bought them for your roommates,” Lu Chen said, pretending.
“Oh, right.” He pulled out a small bag of dried plums from his pocket. “Here, these help with digestion. You can share the snacks with your roommates, but don’t eat any more tonight.”
“Now that’s better,” Yu Xinxin smiled. How did I never notice how thoughtful Lu Chen is?
Not far away, Wei Zhi had just returned from the academic office and happened to see the whole scene. Her face showed no expression, but her eyes were hard to read. Yu Xinxin was smiling brightly at the boy in front of her, holding a big bag of snacks. The boy was tall, handsome, wearing a white tracksuit, full of energy—and his eyes clearly showed how much he cared about her.
Wei Zhi frowned slightly and felt an odd irritation in her chest.
Back at the dorm, Zhou Tong and Han Yin were both there. Yu Xinxin shared the snacks with them.
“Who did you go out with? And what’s with the huge bag of snacks?” Zhou Tong put down her phone and picked out a few things she liked.
“A childhood friend.”
“Just a friend? He took you to dinner and bought you snacks,” Zhou Tong teased.
Han Yin picked out a snack too and looked at Yu Xinxin after hearing that.
“He’s like a brother to me. We grew up together with Qin Rui,” Yu Xinxin explained.
Just then, the dorm door opened. Wei Zhi walked in, face as cold as ever. Remembering what had happened earlier, Yu Xinxin didn’t want things to stay awkward, so she picked up the snacks and smiled politely. “Want some snacks? A friend gave them to us.”
She felt her smile was flawless. But Wei Zhi just glanced at the bag. All the snacks were healthy ones, not fried, and there were even a few good functional drinks. Clearly, the buyer had carefully picked them out knowing Yu Xinxin liked snacks but preferred healthier ones. Wei Zhi couldn’t help but picture the scene again in front of the shop—bright smiles, affectionate eyes.
“I don’t eat snacks,” Wei Zhi said coldly. As she brushed past, that familiar chill came with her. Yu Xinxin paused, Wait… is she mad because I saw her naked?
Maybe if she saw me naked too, she wouldn’t be so upset…?
“Oooh~” Zhou Tong dragged out the sound with a teasing tone. “Childhood friend, huh? If it were me, I’d have trouble choosing too. First love or soulmate?”
Her exaggerated voice gave everyone goosebumps.
“You watch too many dramas,” Yu Xinxin rolled her eyes.
“What’s your friend’s name? Is he cute?” Zhou Tong was suddenly full of gossip.
“His name’s Lu Chen. And yeah, he’s good-looking. Probably your type.” Yu Xinxin smirked. “Want me to introduce him to you?”
“No no no, I don’t fight my girls over guys,” Zhou Tong quickly waved her hands.
“How many times do I have to say it? He’s just my friend,” Yu Xinxin repeated.
“Alright, alright, just a friend,” Zhou Tong finally gave up when she saw how serious Yu Xinxin looked.
“But just because you see him as a friend,” a cold voice cut in, “doesn’t mean he feels the same.”
Yu Xinxin turned immediately. She could tell the speaker was not in a good mood.
“What do you mean by that?” she asked carefully.
“Nothing,” Wei Zhi replied.
That sudden, vague comment left Yu Xinxin completely confused. She wanted to ask more, but seeing how Wei Zhi clearly didn’t want to talk, she stayed quiet.
I really don’t get her!
The two-week military training came to an end quickly. With the intense training, people fainted from exhaustion almost every day. Under the blazing sun, they sweated, chanted slogans, and repeated movements. It was tough—but over time, everyone became more familiar, and Yu Xinxin felt these days would be hard to forget.
Today was the last day. After the morning’s parade, Zhou Tong cried dramatically in front of the drill instructor. Besides his good looks, the main reason was obvious—he was hot. Yu Xinxin thought if their class had had the instructor from the class next door, Zhou Tong wouldn’t have made it through the two weeks.
“Hey, Qin Rui.”
“Mm.” His voice over the phone was low and tired.
Yu Xinxin felt a bit sorry for him. Qin Rui was working at a coffee shop, and every time they talked, he sounded busy. “Mid-Autumn Festival is coming. Do you have any plans?”
“The shop has a holiday event. The manager asked me to work overtime.”
“Oh.” Her expression dimmed.
“Xinxin, I’m sorry. I might not be able to spend Mid-Autumn Festival with you.”
“It’s okay.” Yu Xinxin stopped walking and glanced at a couple holding hands nearby. Her eyes grew firm. She had made up her mind. “How about I come visit you?”
They hadn’t seen each other in nearly two months.
There was silence on the other end.
“…Maybe not. It’s a long trip. I don’t want you to get too tired.”
“It’s fine. I just want to see you.”
“…Alright then.”
“Okay. I’ll go buy a ticket now,” she said happily.
“Okay,” came his soft reply.
