- Chapter 16 - Biting the Hand That Feeds You, Can't You See?
“Hello, Miss Gu is currently busy with her schedule. Please leave a message, and I will relay it and arrange for her to respond.”
The assistant’s voice on the phone sounded like a robotic AI.
Ruan Tang frowned. “What’s keeping her so busy? Is something wrong at home?”
Gu Hewan had never had anyone answer her calls before.
“No, Miss Gu is simply in a meeting, focusing on work to prepare for a long vacation,” the assistant explained.
“I see,” Ruan Tang said, feeling somewhat relieved. “When she’s free, could you ask her about the delivery issue?”
“Certainly.”
The assistant responded politely, and Ruan Tang exchanged a few more polite inquiries before ending the call.
Overwhelmed by fatigue, Ruan Tang decided to rest first.
However, when she woke up in the late afternoon and checked her phone while still in bed, she discovered that Gu Hewan still hadn’t replied to her messages.
She sent another text message and a message on WeChat, but both remained unread and unanswered.
Could there have been a note in the wedding dress that I missed?
Ruan Tang considered searching through the cardboard box again.
But when she got out of bed and looked at the table, the box had vanished.
She went to find Aunt Yuan to ask about it. As she descended the stairs, she saw the housekeeper hurrying toward the basement with a sewing kit in hand.
Their eyes met, and Aunt Yuan looked even more flustered. “M-Miss, you’re awake…”
“Yes. What are you doing?” Ruan Tang asked, frowning.
“I’m helping Miss Ni tidy up some things. You don’t need to worry about it. Just focus on resting and recovering.” Aunt Yuan smiled warmly.
Ruan Tang immediately saw through the housekeeper’s attempt to conceal the truth and pushed open the basement door.
“Miss…” Aunt Yuan tried to stop her, but Ruan Tang had already entered the basement.
The bright lights revealed the chaotic scene.
The cardboard box lay overturned in a corner. The white wedding dress had been slashed to pieces and lay crumpled on the floor. The wedding shoes were scattered, their pristine leather surfaces marred by muddy footprints.
Clearly, this was an act of venting rage.
Scanning the room, Ruan Tang couldn’t find the culprit. She frowned. “Where is she?”
“Miss Ni was called to the company,” Aunt Yuan said, trying to smooth things over. “I’ll see if I can get the wedding dress and shoes repaired.”
Ruan Tang waved her hand. “Don’t bother with repairs. Just put them away as they are. If Hewan asks, I’ll explain.”
With that, she turned and left the basement, heading straight for the front gate.
Aunt Yuan hurried after her. “Where are you going?”
“To the company,” Ruan Tang blurted out, then quickly added, “I got a call too. There’s a meeting I need to attend.”
Aunt Yuan raised a skeptical eyebrow but didn’t press the matter.
Fifteen minutes later, Ruan Tang arrived at the group’s headquarters.
As she approached the elevators, she saw her assistant directing three or four people carrying boxes onto the elevator.
When their eyes met, the assistant quickly greeted her.
Ruan Tang frowned at the contents of the boxes. “You’re not busy with projects, so why are you moving all this stuff around?”
The items they were carrying weren’t office supplies or client gifts; instead, they were household appliances.
Soy milk maker, induction cooker, rice cooker, air fryer…
Are they turning the office into a mini-cafeteria?
“Th-these aren’t mine! Miss Ni asked me to prepare them!” the assistant hurriedly explained.
Ruan Tang’s expression shifted slightly. “Go handle your work. I’ll have someone deliver these items to her.”
The boss isn’t angry with me—that means my salary and bonus are safe! The assistant quickly nodded and pressed the button for another floor in the elevator.
Ruan Tang led her team straight to Ni Yunshi’s office floor.
As soon as they stepped inside, the once-lively office area fell into complete silence.
After all, everyone knew that Ni Yunshi and Ruan Tang were on bad terms.
Without waiting for an invitation, Ruan Tang took the initiative. She gestured to the items the security guards had helped carry up. “Where should we put the things President Ni requested?”
“Please follow me!” the receptionist hurried forward to guide them.
Though the group’s management held high positions, the company’s CEO still held the ultimate power to decide who stayed and who went.
Ruan Tang followed, heading straight into Ni Yunshi’s office.
In President Ni’s office break room, a small dining table had replaced the bed, and the vanity had been transformed into a makeshift kitchenette.
Is she really planning to cook here? Ruan Tang wondered, glancing around. In the corner, she noticed the warming cabinet for cosmetics was still there. She pulled it open, only to find it filled with fresh ingredients: sea shrimp, spotted fish, water spinach…
All her favorite foods.
A warm feeling spread through Ruan Tang’s heart. As her thoughts drifted, she heard the receptionist pleading softly from the front desk.
“President Ni bought all these things herself, using her own money, not company funds. And since she’s keeping them in the break room, they won’t disrupt the office environment.”
Ruan Tang nodded. “Where is she? Did she expect someone else to unpack all this for her?”
“President Ni took a call and went to the reception area. I’ll take care of unpacking here!” The receptionist immediately began bustling about, arranging the items.
Following the information, Ruan Tang headed to the elevator and returned to the reception area on the first floor.
After searching briefly, she found the reception area empty. But then she noticed the company’s adjacent coffee shop.
In a corner booth, Ni Yunshi sat leisurely with her legs crossed, facing none other than Sun Hongwei!
Alarm bells rang in Ruan Tang’s mind, and she completely forgot her original purpose for coming.
She quietly slipped into the booth next to theirs. Though the voices were low, she could hear them clearly if she focused.
“Ni Yunshi, what exactly do you mean by this?” Sun Hongwei demanded through gritted teeth.
Ni Yunshi scoffed, “Ingratitude, plain and simple. Can’t you see that?”
Back when she drove Ruan Tang away, Ni Yunshi had entered the group to pursue her career, all thanks to Sun Hongwei’s backing and support.
It could be said that Ni Yunshi’s current wealth and status were entirely due to Sun Hongwei’s past cultivation and sacrifices.
Sun Hongwei’s fists clenched until his knuckles cracked. “So that’s it! No wonder I couldn’t eliminate her completely, no matter how many connections I pulled. I thought it was because the threads were too tangled to control, but now I see—you were secretly undermining me all along, weren’t you?”
Ni Yunshi smirked coldly, offering no reply.
Why keep asking questions you already know the answer to? Can’t you just answer yourself? Let me go! Let me go!
The lounge isn’t even renovated yet. Can this old geezer just drop dead already? Don’t delay my important mission of improving Tangtang’s meals!
Ugh, I’m about to lose it!
Receiving no response, Sun Hongwei suddenly sneered. “Ni Yunshi, do you think that by destroying my company, you’ve eliminated all your worries?”
“Do you even have any culture? I’m not just free from worries—I’m completely carefree!” Ni Yunshi retorted, her eyes blazing and her words cutting.
In the shadows, Ruan Tang raised an eyebrow.
Her heart and words aligned perfectly, her tone completely different from her usual icy composure. It seemed Ni Yunshi was planning to seize this opportunity to unleash her madness.
However, before Ni Yunshi could launch her verbal assault, Sun Hongwei slammed his fist on the table and rose to his feet.
“Ni Yunshi, you may control my business, but I hold your life in my hands!”
