- Chapter 18 - Hiring Someone to Sabotage My Own Business
The voice drifted into Ruan Tang’s dream.
“No… together… won’t…”
She murmured softly, her fragmented words barely coherent, but her restless curling up clearly conveyed her unwillingness to be separated.
Resisting her drowsiness, Ruan Tang forced her eyes open.
Through her hazy vision, she saw Ni Yunshi smiling down at her from mere inches away.
“I was just teasing you. Go back to sleep,” Ni Yunshi whispered soothingly. Ruan Tang closed her eyes again, reassured, even daring to nuzzle against Ni Yunshi’s chest.
The moon shifted, and the sun rose.
Hunger roused Ruan Tang from her slumber.
Opening her eyes, she saw the feather crystal chandelier on the ceiling. Simultaneously, the sounds of washing vegetables and cooking, mixed with snippets of conversation, drifted from the kitchen.
“Aunt Yuan, did you remember everything I told you?” Ni Yunshi asked.
“Don’t worry, Miss Ni. I’ve been taking care of Miss Ruan since she was a child. I know her preferences and habits like the back of my hand,” Aunt Yuan replied, helping Ni Yunshi prepare bowls and plates for breakfast.
Ni Yunshi nodded, stirring the seafood porridge in the pot. “Good. When I’m not here, I’ll be counting on you to take good care of her.”
As the two women worked busily, a voice filled with anger suddenly interrupted them.
“Where do you think you’re running off to?”
Both women froze simultaneously.
Ni Yunshi turned to meet Ruan Tang’s cold, piercing gaze.
“To the company. I’ll have Aunt Yuan take good care of you. I can’t have you dying before I even get on the board—I’d have to go through all that trouble of maneuvering and scheming again.” Ni Yunshi’s tone shifted subtly.
Why is Tangtang staring at me like that?
Did she catch me hugging her secretly?
Ruan Tang scrutinized her intently but detected no outward signs of deception.
Ni Yunshi remained as aloof and detached as ever, her inner thoughts as contradictory to her outward demeanor as usual.
Yet Ruan Tang’s intuition screamed that something was amiss.
At the breakfast table, Ni Yunshi showed no unusual behavior either.
After finishing her meal, Ni Yunshi rose to leave.
Ruan Tang set down her chopsticks and followed suit. “Let’s go to the company together.”
“Huh? Didn’t you have another day off?” Ni Yunshi frowned.
Ruan Tang’s suspicion was plain in her eyes. “Since when have you been so concerned about my schedule?”
Always! I’ve always been concerned!
Every day you were overseas, someone reported on your activities to me!
“Just a casual question. If you’re coming, hurry up,” Ni Yunshi said nonchalantly, though her pace slowed as she waited.
Ruan Tang followed and settled into the passenger seat.
Since Ni Yunshi showed no outward signs of unease, Ruan Tang resolved to keep a close watch. She refused to believe Ni Yunshi could maintain her composure indefinitely, convinced she would eventually betray her hidden secrets.
Upon arriving at the company, Ni Yunshi immediately busied herself with work.
Ruan Tang glanced at the group’s schedule and prepared to head to the conference room.
But just as she was about to take a step, her assistant suddenly blocked her path. “President Ruan, this is the latest quarterly data forecast analysis. Please review it urgently.”
In addition to her position within the group, Ruan Tang also oversaw her own subsidiary, a venture she had established overseas over three years and brought back as her entry capital.
As the youngest and least experienced executive, her influence within the group hinged entirely on the performance of her subsidiary.
Compared to the group meeting, the data review was indeed more pressing.
Ruan Tang sat back down at her desk and began reviewing the report.
The report was flawless, allowing her to skim through it quickly and effortlessly.
“No issues. Publish it immediately,” she instructed.
As she prepared to rise again, her assistant presented her with another stack of documents for review.
After examining two of them, Ruan Tang sensed something was amiss.
These documents were supposed to be the assistant’s responsibility, and he had already completed his review. There was no reason for him to be bringing them to her now!
With this realization, Ruan Tang glanced at her assistant.
When their eyes met, she caught him turning away guiltily.
Thud!
With a soft click, Ruan Tang closed the file in her hand and raised her gaze coldly. “Li Xiao, are you tired of your position?”
“N-no…” The assistant waved his hands frantically, starting to explain before stopping himself.
“Speak, or go to HR and resign,” Ruan Tang stated bluntly, leaving him with two clear options.
“It was Miss Ni’s instructions,” Li Xiao wisely chose the latter, explaining with a pout. “She said you should rest and look over the documents. The work of dealing with the old foxes in the group can wait…”
“She certainly loves meddling.”
Ruan Tang’s tone was harsh, but the frown that had creased her brow now smoothed out.
Without waiting for further explanation, Ruan Tang stood up, intending to use the break to find Ni Yunshi and keep an eye on her.
However, as soon as the elevator doors opened on the correct floor, she heard a commotion.
The elevator doors slid open, revealing a chaotic scene at the entrance of Bai Mei’er Company.
The tempered glass doors had shattered into countless fragments scattered across the floor.
The receptionist cowered in a corner, clutching her forehead and trembling, while two burly, tattooed men blocked the entrance.
Is someone causing trouble?!
Ruan Tang’s shock mingled with a sudden realization. Recalling Sun Hongwei and Ni Yunshi’s meeting yesterday, she wondered if…
Anxiety surged within her, overriding caution. Instinct drove her to rush inside without hesitation.
Her entry was surprisingly smooth; the burly men at the entrance didn’t stop her, only shouting a couple of times.
Undaunted, Ruan Tang pressed on, heading straight for Ni Yunshi’s office.
Sure enough, the office door had been violently smashed.
The solid wood door lay split in two, and three or four tattooed men blocked the entrance. One of them was wielding a fire axe from the emergency cabinet!
“Stop! Everyone calm down!” Ruan Tang shouted.
All eyes immediately turned toward her.
In the crowd, Ni Yunshi’s face paled, her panic evident. “Y-you… how did you—?”
Before she could finish, Ruan Tang had already charged into the group, positioning herself protectively in front of Ni Yunshi.
“I’ve already sent an emergency alert. The police will be here in five minutes. If you keep this up, none of you will get away with it!” Ruan Tang’s threat burst out.
But she immediately regretted her words.
The situation called for calm persuasion and emotional stabilization, not the arrogant, domineering behavior of a spoiled child.
As expected, the leader’s face darkened instantly.
“You fucking b1tch! Who the hell do you think you are, talking to us like that?!”
With those words, the man took two long strides forward.
A gust of wind surged as he raised his wooden club menacingly.
“Watch out!” Ni Yunshi tried to pull Ruan Tang out of the way.
But Ruan Tang suddenly spun around, neutralizing the force of the pull and instead wrapping her arms around Ni Yunshi.
A dull thud echoed as the club crashed down on the back of Ruan Tang’s head.
Struck by the pain, Ruan Tang suddenly felt her balance waver. Before her consciousness could fade again, she thought she heard several startled cries erupt around her.
When her awareness returned, the antiseptic smell in the air told her she was back in the hospital.
At the same time, she was surprised to hear muffled, anguished thoughts:
Li Xiao, you worthless piece of trash! Tangtang, wake up and beat me senseless—I deserve it!
I was wrong. I was too impatient. I should have waited for another day…
I should have hired someone to trash my own place when Tangtang wasn’t around!
