- Chapter 22 - Ni Yunshi, Equally Stunned
How could the sudden disappearance of a living person not be terrifying?
A chill ran through Ruan Tang’s heart.
Of course, she thought. How could someone as cunning and shrewd as Sun Hongwei leave any loose ends? He must have secured all the evidence and witnesses before making his move!
As she pondered this, red and blue flashing lights suddenly pierced through the window.
Ruan Tang snapped out of her thoughts, her eyes stinging from the glare, yet she couldn’t tear her gaze away.
It was a police car!
The coldness in her heart spread through her entire body, causing her limbs to stiffen uncontrollably.
The old fox is still the wiliest!
If Ni Yunshi could bankrupt the Hongxin Group without giving them a chance to fight back, how could Sun Hongwei lack the means to imprison Ni Yunshi without giving her a chance to react?
No, that’s not right. She had a chance to react—she could have run.
But I locked her up again…
Terror and regret twisted in her gut as police officers began pounding on the door.
Surprisingly, Aunt Yuan didn’t answer.
By the time Ruan Tang regained her senses, the knocking had escalated from polite to impatient: “Open the door! Otherwise, we’re authorized to force entry and make an arrest!”
“Coming!”
To prevent further escalation, Ruan Tang hurriedly responded.
The moment the door opened, the police officers outside flashed their arrest warrant.
Ruan Tang’s mind was in chaos, but she still let them in. “Who are you here to arrest?” she asked, her voice stiff.
Before she could finish the question, a loud crash echoed through the house.
Everyone startled and turned to see a U-shaped lock hanging on the basement door from the outside.
“It seems there’s more hidden here than our investigation revealed,” the lead officer remarked, his gaze probing. He then headed toward the basement.
Ruan Tang instinctively moved to block him, immediately drawing several suspicious glances.
“Miss, Miss Ni is still in the basement getting her things. Why didn’t you call out to see if anyone was there before locking the door?” Aunt Yuan interjected, stepping in to defuse the situation. She reached for the door.
Ruan Tang panicked and tried to stop her.
But before she could speak, Aunt Yuan shook her head slightly. “It’s alright,” she said, her tone calm and measured, yet strangely detached.
The words hung in the air, causing both Ruan Tang and the lead officer to freeze.
Then, the basement door swung open, and Ni Yunshi stumbled out, Aunt Yuan catching her arm.
“Get away from me!” Ni Yunshi snapped, her mind in turmoil, pushing Aunt Yuan away without gratitude.
Aunt Yuan quickly smoothed things over with a placating smile. “The basement was dark, Miss Ni couldn’t see properly. Please don’t tease her, Miss Ni.”
Though her words were directed at Ni Yunshi and Ruan Tang, her gaze remained fixed on the investigating officers.
“I apologize for the unsightly scene,” Ruan Tang said, cutting to the chase. “May I ask who you’re here to arrest?”
Duh! It’s obviously me!
Oh no, Tangtang’s going to be charged with harboring a fugitive because I didn’t run away fast enough!
Waaah, I’ve ruined Tangtang! I deserve to die! I’m a criminal for the ages!
Ni Yunshi maintained a calm facade, but her heart was racing with panic.
As expected, the officers advanced with cold expressions, flanking her on either side.
Even though she had anticipated this, Ni Yunshi couldn’t help but tremble.
Just as the silver handcuffs flashed into view and she was about to extend her wrists, hoping her cooperation might earn her a reduced sentence or a chance for a retrial…
Suddenly, a click echoed through the room as the handcuffs snapped shut—not on Ni Yunshi, but on Aunt Yuan standing beside her.
Ruan Tang and Ni Yunshi froze in shock.
When they turned to Aunt Yuan, they saw a relieved smile on her face.
“I thought I’d gotten away with it completely,” she said, “but it seems I couldn’t escape after all.”
“What do you mean? Aunt Yuan, what have you done?” Ruan Tang cried out in alarm, instinctively lunging forward to grab her and demand answers.
The police didn’t give her a chance to explain, immediately escorting her into the car. Only a female officer remained to explain the situation.
Yesterday, the owner of the coffee distribution company had been taken into custody for selling substandard goods.
Following the trail of the counterfeit goods case, investigators quickly uncovered the connection between him and Sun Hongwei.
It turned out that a year ago, the owner had conspired with Sun Hongwei to poison Ruan Yuntian and seize the Ruan Family’s assets.
To avoid leaving traces, Sun Hongwei initially opted for a slow-acting poison.
However, the slow poison proved too time-consuming. When Hongxin Company faced financial difficulties and Ruan Yuntian refused to provide assistance, Sun Hongwei and his accomplices decided to take Ruan Yuntian’s life directly.
“Sun Hongwei is still wanted, but he’s currently abroad, making it difficult for us to apprehend him. Rest assured, we will ensure your father finds peace,” the female officer reassured Ruan Tang.
Ruan Tang felt overwhelmed by the revelations.
Only after the police had left and silence returned did Ruan Tang turn to Ni Yunshi, who was equally stunned.
“You weren’t the one who killed Ruan Yuntian?”
“I… I thought it was me too. Sun Hongwei must have been trying to frame me. I even knew the distributor, but I didn’t have time to…”
Ni Yunshi’s words tumbled out in a jumbled mess, but she abruptly stopped mid-sentence.
No, he died before I could act! Before I even met with the distributors!
I had everything prepared.
At that time, the only other person in the house was that old hag!
“Stay here. I need to go out,” Ruan Tang said, swaying as she stood up.
“Stop! You still have bandages on your head. If you’re going out, you should go back to the hospital!” Ni Yunshi grabbed her arm, pulling her back.
“I can’t! It’s Aunt Yuan! She watched me grow up! She…”
The surge of emotion made her bl00d rush to her head. Halfway through her sentence, dizziness struck again, freezing her emotions, movements, and words in place.
Her vision went black, and Ruan Tang lost consciousness once more.
This time, when Ruan Tang awoke, she was at home.
Bright daylight streamed through the window cracks, carrying the crisp, cool scent of morning dew.
Almost simultaneously with her awakening, Ni Yunshi’s voice drifted into her ears.
“The doctor already came. Your head injury isn’t serious, but you’ve been pushing yourself too hard without resting. The stress caused you to faint.”
Ruan Tang turned at the sound and saw Ni Yunshi sitting by the bed, dark circles under her eyes and a weary expression on her face.
“Is there any news about yesterday’s incident?” Ruan Tang asked, ignoring her own condition as she struggled to sit up.
Ni Yunshi reached out to push her back down, but after a moment’s hesitation, she helped Ruan Tang sit up instead.
Xiao Tangtang just won’t stay still! If I’d known, I would have asked the doctor for a sedative to knock her out!
Damn it, the police called again, saying we still need to keep it a secret…
Secret!
“Tell me!” Ruan Tang hissed through gritted teeth, her low growl almost echoing Ni Yunshi’s unspoken thoughts.
Ni Yunshi flinched slightly, her lips pursing in a pout. “Aunt Yuan has confessed. We’re just waiting for the trial now. But she wants to see you one last time.”
“Let’s go! Right now!” Ruan Tang said anxiously.
Knowing there was no point in trying to make her lie back down, Ni Yunshi helped Ruan Tang get dressed and out of bed, then led her out the door.
When they arrived, they contacted the officer who had called earlier. The officer escorted them to the detention center’s visiting room.
Ni Yunshi tried to follow Ruan Tang inside, but the officer raised a hand to stop her.
“I’m sorry, only one person can enter. And Yuan Qingxue specifically requested to see Miss Ruan.”
