- Chapter 34 - Book Learning Is Ultimately Superficial
“Take your pick,” Ni Yunshi murmured, her body melting against the headboard, radiating languidness.
Her long lashes drooped halfway, her eyes shimmering with a subtle, seductive allure that she cast toward Ruan Tang.
Gone was the aloof, virtuous demeanor of a high-mountain flower. In this open expression of affection, her beauty shone even more brightly.
Ruan Tang found herself unconsciously entranced, drawn closer to her.
In the end, it was Ruan Tang who surrendered first, collapsing in exhaustion. Ni Yunshi, content as can be, used her as a human body pillow.
The seductive little sea anemone, crawling into my bed at midnight.
Book knowledge is shallow; a wife must be nurtured by her own hand!
I’m half-dead from exhaustion, and all she can think about are these dirty poems? Is she even studying for her exams?
Furious, Ruan Tang bit Ni Yunshi’s nose, ignoring her wince of pain as she flipped over.
But Ni Yunshi, knowing there was only one pillow on the bed, simply let Ruan Tang roll—she couldn’t escape.
Meanwhile, Ni Yunshi continued to emit soft, suggestive moans.
Driven to distraction, Ruan Tang pinched her waist again, this time with a sharp twist.
“Are you ever going to stop?”
“Learning isn’t something you can rush,” Ni Yunshi replied with mock seriousness.
“Well, you can’t get fat from just one bite!” Ruan Tang snapped.
The mischievous hand on her waist immediately stilled, but the affectionate embrace tightened.
Finally, the three-and-a-half-year knot in their hearts had unraveled.
They wanted nothing more than to fall asleep in each other’s arms, but the reunion had stirred up too many emotions. Though their bodies were exhausted, their minds refused to rest.
Ruan Tang pushed herself up, about to get out of bed, when Ni Yunshi suddenly woke. “Where are you going?” she murmured sleepily, her voice soft and drowsy.
“I’m going back to my room. I need to take some melatonin.”
“No need. I have some in my nightstand,” Ni Yunshi said, reaching out to grasp Ruan Tang’s wrist. “I’ll make sure you have everything you need.”
Ruan Tang pulled open the nightstand drawer and found a bottle of melatonin gummies inside, just as Ni Yunshi had said.
Next to the melatonin box was a small red silk box.
Curious, Ruan Tang opened it, her heart warming.
Inside lay the silver ring she had given Ni Yunshi back in their student days.
As memories flashed through her mind like a revolving lantern, a sudden weight settled on her shoulder.
Ni Yunshi, wrapped in a blanket, leaned closer, resting her chin on Ruan Tang’s shoulder. “What are you looking at?”
“You still have this?” Ruan Tang showed Ni Yunshi the ring. “I remember you used to look down on it.”
When Ruan Tang had given her the ring, Ni Yunshi’s family hadn’t yet fallen from grace. She possessed a wealth of jewels and luxury goods, and a silver ring costing a few hundred yuan had seemed insignificant to her. She had never worn it.
Back then, Ruan Tang was ostracized by her father and struggled to survive in the opulent circles of the wealthy elite.
She had painstakingly saved up for half a year to buy the matching rings.
Later, when Ni Yunshi came to her seeking refuge, she had brought this very ring with her.
In their previous life, before Ruan Tang’s death, her enemies had shoved the ring into her mouth as a final humiliation.
“Hmm, it was just there, so I kept it,” Ni Yunshi mumbled sleepily.
What’s this?
A ring… hiss… Where did this come from?
Ah, it’s always been in my luggage, just lying around. Probably something I bought on a whim when I was little?
So she didn’t remember where the ring came from?
That made sense. So much time had passed. Even I wouldn’t remember something like this if I hadn’t seen it.
“It’s cold. Hurry up and eat so we can go to sleep,” Ni Yunshi urged, opening her arms to spread the blanket and wrap Ruan Tang in it again.
Ruan Tang stopped thinking about it, chewed the candy, and lay down to sleep in Ni Yunshi’s arms.
The next morning, Ruan Tang woke up early and slipped out of the room. When she went downstairs, Gu Hewan was already there. The two went out for breakfast together before heading to the office.
By the time Ni Yunshi woke up, the bed was empty.
She arrived at the office with a dark expression, making her subordinates feel like they were sitting on pins and needles.
Just before lunch break, Li Xiao brought a box up from downstairs.
Ni Yunshi slumped in her chair, bored. “What’s this?”
“President Ruan asked me to deliver this. Please take a look, President Ni. If everything’s in order, President Ruan hopes you’ll keep it with you at all times,” Li Xiao said, opening the box.
Inside lay a dazzling gold filigree butterfly wedding ring, nestled in a pristine white satin box.
Ni Yunshi straightened up abruptly, her eyes lighting up.
Upon closer inspection, she noticed the ring box was unusually large. “This must be a pair of wedding rings. Where’s the other one?”
“There was only one when I received it, but I noticed President Ruan wearing a plain gold band on her ring finger today,” Li Xiao explained.
Ni Yunshi understood immediately.
Of course, a wedding night requires wedding rings!
And it’s gold—my favorite!
“Alright, I get it. You…”
“Oh, that’s quite lovely, Li Xiao. Are you trying to woo President Ruan?”
Before Ni Yunshi’s delighted smile could fully form, another voice abruptly cut through her joy.
She looked up to see Gu Hewan standing there.
