Ruan Tang’s heart stirred at the words, but after a three-second pause, she shook her head. “We should take things one step at a time. That’s the most stable approach.”
“If we support each other every step of the way, isn’t that inherently stable?” Gu Hewan persisted. Seeing Ruan Tang’s hesitation, she frowned. “Xiao Tang, do you really think I would harm her?”
The deeper worry had been laid bare.
“No, I just think it’s inappropriate to pull strings the moment you arrive,” Ruan Tang explained, her voice tinged with guilt.
Though she knew neither woman meant harm, there was a clear rift between them.
Forcing deep collaboration now might only lead to chaos.
“What’s inappropriate about it? The first thing I did upon returning was bring her down. Giving her this opportunity now is just balancing things out.”
Gu Hewan seemed oblivious to Ruan Tang’s concerns, continuing:
“Besides, you’re involved in this project too. Guiding her through each step yourself will be far more stable than her grinding through the ranks the traditional way, right?”
Indeed, for a normal management trainee to be promoted, it would typically take at least two years.
The mall was a chaotic mix of interests, prone to sudden changes. Bai Mei’er, not being a crucial industry, was indeed vulnerable to being phased out.
Moreover, there were few projects where Ruan Tang could participate and promote Ni Yunshi without raising concerns about favoritism.
“Then… let’s give it a try.”
Ruan Tang nodded her agreement in the afternoon. The official project team was established before the end of the workday.
During the meeting, Ruan Tang reviewed the submitted personnel list and added, “All project team members must undergo a comprehensive medical examination and submit their reports for review.”
Given the high-pressure nature of major projects and the strict attendance requirements, screening candidates based on their physical fitness was a reasonable precaution.
The motion passed unanimously.
The next morning, Ruan Tang drove Ni Yunshi to the medical examination.
By noon, Ruan Tang had all the medical reports in hand.
No prior medical history, all indicators within normal ranges—Ni Yunshi didn’t even have br3ast nodules!
“Let’s go to the psychological counseling center next,” Ruan Tang said, pulling Ni Yunshi along.
“No way! I’ve been running up and down stairs all morning; my feet are killing me,” Ni Yunshi protested, her red lips pouting dramatically.
“Just think of it as window shopping,” Ruan Tang reassured her.
“Who in their right mind treats a hospital like a shopping mall?” Ni Yunshi rolled her eyes.
Other people go from the wardrobe department to the food court. I’m going from the physical exam department to the psychiatry ward!
Should I just get a couple of minor surgeries to complete the experience?
Maybe a successful surgery can finally put an end to my failed life?
Despite her silent complaints, Ni Yunshi obediently followed Ruan Tang.
Another half-hour passed as Ni Yunshi glumly filled out a questionnaire.
The doctor frowned deeply as he reviewed the results.
Ruan Tang’s heart leaped. “Is something wrong?”
“You’re outgoing, communicate well, and are good at taking the lead,” the doctor said, adjusting his glasses. “It’s just… you should spend less time browsing male models online.”
That’s a lie!
I was clearly looking at long legs in black stockings!
Ni Yunshi chuckled awkwardly. “I-I understand.”
Speechless, Ruan Tang dragged the embarrassing mess out of the consultation room.
Looking at the psychological test results again, Ruan Tang muttered, “How could it just be simple lust…?”
“Can’t I just be healthy?” Ni Yunshi suddenly frowned, her gaze sweeping over Ruan Tang. “Tangtang, why do you seem so eager for me to have some kind of problem?”
“No, I’m just worried about potential issues during the approval process. Once you’re rejected, it’s hard to climb back up.”
Ruan Tang composed herself and carefully tucked away her medical examination results.
Within two days, the project team was finalized, and the construction permits for the scenic area were approved.
The next step was the bidding and financing conference.
Following unspoken custom, Tangzhao Group would host a cocktail reception before the formal conference to cultivate connections and gauge the intentions of various parties.
The reception was attended by numerous distinguished guests.
“Those handing out business cards so eagerly are mostly businessmen or foremen preparing to bid later. The ones standing quietly in the crowd or collecting cards are usually wealthy investors and financiers,” Ruan Tang whispered to Ni Yunshi, sharing her insights.
“That man with the naturally curly hair is the young master of the Shang Family, here to scout the situation.”
Shang’s old man’s wild seed—no money, no status, just a gigolo preying on rich girls.
“The one with the white handkerchief in his br3ast pocket is the city’s biggest construction tycoon.”
The city’s biggest gossip mill! The drama between lovers is a three-way standoff!
“The man with the light blue tie is a director at Shaoshang Group. We’re also exploring potential collaborations with other groups.”
Wow, this guy’s got a record! He was jailed for embezzling public funds. Did they just release him and rehire him?
Ruan Tang introduced, Ni Yunshi sniped.
Finally, Ruan Tang fell silent, suddenly realizing that these esteemed guests were nothing more than mudfish wriggling in a swamp.
Suddenly, the young master of the Shang Family noticed Ruan Tang and Ni Yunshi in the corner and strode over.
“Who is this young lady? I’ve never seen her at any of our gatherings before. Miss Ni, your subordinates certainly produce beauties. Is she a new protégé you’re grooming?”
The man’s gaze lingered on Ruan Tang, his eyes sweeping over her with a leering glance.
Ruan Tang frowned in discomfort, but Ni Yunshi flashed a sweet smile.
“She’s my direct supervisor. I’m the new protégé she’s grooming.”
Scared now, huh?!
Serves you right, you pervert!
As expected, Young Master Shang took a half-step back.
But his momentary embarrassment vanished in an instant, replaced by a renewed enthusiasm. “My apologies for the inappropriate introduction. It’s just that your beauty is truly breathtaking.”
Slick.
Even more oily than a certain Han! More greasy than two Yangs combined!
Ruan Tang’s heart ached, but she maintained a polite smile on her face.
“Hello, my name is Ruan Tang.”
After introducing herself, she politely handed over her business card.
Young Master Shang accepted the card, a glint of cunning flashing in his eyes. “I didn’t realize you were the rising star of Tangzhao Group! I’ll raise a glass to Miss Ruan!”
“I…”
Ruan Tang tried to politely decline, but he had already drained his glass, leaving her no room to refuse.
Now, Ruan Tang stood holding her wine glass, unsure whether to drink or not. Drinking would be against her principles, but refusing would be impolite.
Seeing her hesitation after he had finished his drink, Young Master Shang’s handsome face darkened.
“Miss Ruan, are you truly unwilling to give me even a shred of respect? You’re just a manager at Tangzhao Group, yet you act like the owner of the entire company, expecting everyone to bow down to you? Anyone who didn’t know better would think you were the only one in charge at Tangzhao Group!”
His voice grew louder, drawing the attention of many in the room.
The other Tangzhao Group executives present exchanged meaningful glances.
Ruan Tang frowned. Even her polite adherence to etiquette had landed her in trouble. If she had known, she would have kept her expression cold.
Just as Young Master Shang was about to speak again, Ruan Tang prepared to feign drunkenness to end the situation.
But as she raised her glass, her wrist was suddenly weighed down.
Ni Yunshi pressed down on Ruan Tang’s glass, her sweet smile unwavering as she stepped between them.
