- Chapter 38 - A Reborn Meets a Transmigrator
Li Huai was indeed Ni Yunshi’s high school classmate.
During their school days, Ruan Tang, who relentlessly pursued Ni Yunshi, naturally crossed paths with Li Huai.
He was a top student who had secured a coveted spot through direct admission, his future shining brightly. He was also one of Ni Yunshi’s most devoted admirers.
Later, to attend the same university as Ni Yunshi, he forfeited his guaranteed admission and took the national college entrance exam himself, achieving an exceptionally high score that secured him a place at an ordinary undergraduate institution.
Even when Ni Yunshi’s family fortunes collapsed during their freshman year and her circle of aristocratic friends scattered, Li Huai remained steadfastly loyal.
He was practically a gender-swapped version of Ruan Tang herself.
However, after their sophomore year, Ruan Tang was forced to study abroad.
She remained unaware of what transpired between Ni Yunshi and Li Huai afterward. Yet, even if Ni Yunshi merely saw Li Huai as a tool to be used and discarded, her true feelings would inevitably betray her.
Ruan Tang recounted the entire history of Li Huai’s entanglement with her, word by word.
Ni Yunshi froze, but still attempted to weasel her way out: “I have amnesia. I was in a car accident…”
“There’s no record of any traffic accident, no medical records, and no evidence of psychological trauma,” Ruan Tang interrupted sharply.
No wonder the project team’s physical screenings were so strict! They were digging a trap for me here!
Ni Yunshi bit her lip, unable to deny the truth. She could only let this thin veil of deception be torn away.
Silence was a tacit admission.
Ruan Tang stared at her. “So, from the moment I returned to China, I’ve been dealing with you, not her, right?”
“Yes…” Ni Yunshi mumbled in agreement.
“Ha!” Ruan Tang let out a cold, short laugh.
She had thought her obsession from her past life had finally found fulfillment, only to discover it was just a shell with a different core!
She had previously dismissed Gu Hewan’s claims as absurd, but now she realized the world was full of even more ridiculous truths.
The room fell silent again, this time broken by the sound of the door opening.
Gu Hewan stood in the doorway, gesturing for Ruan Tang to come outside. “Xiao Tang, there’s something I need to tell you. Can you come out for a moment?”
“Okay,” Ruan Tang replied immediately, turning to leave.
She didn’t know how to face the two-faced Ni Yunshi right now. It would be better to talk after they’d both calmed down.
Leaving the lounge, Ruan Tang followed Gu Hewan to a small open-air platform on the same floor.
Ruan Tang leaned against the railing, the cool night breeze rustling through her hair, carrying away some of the anxiety etched between her brows.
“Did you have a disagreement with someone just now? Your expression suddenly turned so grim,” Gu Hewan asked softly.
“No,” Ruan Tang replied, concealing her thoughts. “By the way, you said earlier that Ni Yunshi seemed like a completely different person. What did you mean by that?”
“I was just remarking on how different she is from how you described her,” Gu Hewan offered evasively, then added, “What’s wrong? Do you think there’s something truly wrong with her?”
There was a huge problem, but voicing it would make her sound insane.
When Ruan Tang didn’t respond, Gu Hewan lowered her gaze and said, “If there are things you can’t understand, don’t dwell on them. It’s better to live in the present.”
Her words struck Ruan Tang like a key unlocking a puzzle.
She’s right, Ruan Tang thought. If I can’t even explain my own inexplicable rebirth, why should Ni Yunshi’s possession by a transmigrated soul seem strange?
Besides, my own feelings—my shift from hatred to love—might have been influenced by this new soul…
Seeing Ruan Tang’s expression gradually brighten, Gu Hewan’s eyes deepened with hidden meaning as she spoke in a low voice.
“What I wanted to tell you earlier was about Ni Yunshi.”
“Hmm? What is it?” Ruan Tang snapped out of her thoughts.
“Take a look for yourself first,” Gu Hewan said, handing her phone over.
The phone displayed a chat log between Gu Hewan and the finance department. As Ruan Tang scrolled through the messages, her brow furrowed tighter with each line.
Each message, every screenshot of financial reports, surveillance footage, and system access logs—all pointed to Ni Yunshi secretly embezzling company funds.
“This can’t be true! It must be slander!” Ruan Tang angrily threw the phone back into Gu Hewan’s arms. “I’ve personally overseen her work these past two days!”
“Don’t panic. For now, only I know about this,” Gu Hewan quickly reassured her. “Since you’re certain she’s innocent, we need to investigate thoroughly.”
“Investigate! We must uncover the mastermind behind this!” Ruan Tang’s anger intensified.
After all, a crooked upper beam leads to a crooked lower beam. If Ni Yunshi were falsely accused, Ruan Tang herself wouldn’t escape unscathed.
“Also, we need to ensure everyone below us keeps this quiet,” Ruan Tang said, her brow still furrowed.
The scandal at today’s reception had already caused a stir. There was no guarantee it wouldn’t become Ni Yunshi’s “criminal record”!
“You can trust me to handle this,” Gu Hewan assured her, then looped her arm through Ruan Tang’s. “Alright, it’s chilly on the balcony. Let’s head back to the lounge. We need to tell Ni Yunshi about this anyway.”
“Okay,” Ruan Tang nodded.
The two women returned together, but as they entered the corridor, they saw the lounge door standing wide open.
Ruan Tang paused for a moment, then quickened her pace.
Anxiety surged through her.
She hurried to the doorway and peered inside, her breath and heartbeat freezing for an instant.
The lounge was completely empty!
Gu Hewan immediately called the event organizer. After a brief exchange, her expression darkened.
“Ni Yunshi hasn’t returned to the venue. The hotel staff said she seemed to have gone downstairs.”
Before Gu Hewan could finish, Ruan Tang was already striding toward the elevators. “I’m leaving the party to you!”
“I understand! Don’t panic!”
Gu Hewan’s words trailed off as Ruan Tang hastily entered the elevator.
Ding-dong
The mirrored silver doors parted down the middle.
Ruan Tang’s gaze shot out, and she saw Ni Yunshi at the hotel entrance, lifting her skirt to hail a taxi.
“Stop!” Ruan Tang shouted.
Ni Yunshi flinched, then, like a mouse hearing a cat’s meow, darted into the cab.
The taxi practically shot off like a rocket!
By the time Ruan Tang chased after it to the entrance, the car carrying Ni Yunshi had already vanished without a trace. She immediately headed to the parking lot to retrieve her own vehicle.
If she’s running, she’ll definitely go home first.
After all, her savings and belongings were all at home. She couldn’t possibly flee empty-handed!
Half an hour later, Ruan Tang drove home, pushed open the door, but found no sign of Ni Yunshi.
Her identification documents and bank cards remained untouched in their usual places. There was no indication anyone had been there.
Could she be hiding at the company?
Hesitating for a moment, Ruan Tang turned around and headed back to the office.
But the office was still deserted.
When Ruan Tang tried calling, the line remained busy. Bai Mei’er had Ni Yunshi’s assistant try, but the result was the same.
“What’s going on? President Ni rarely makes calls to anyone except me…” the assistant said, puzzled.
Ruan Tang rolled her eyes. “She’s blocked all of us.”
At this critical moment, the inability to find Ni Yunshi wasn’t just about clearing up misunderstandings—it carried a far more dire consequence.
If Ni Yunshi didn’t return, the accusations of embezzling public funds and fleeing with the money would become irrefutable!
